OT: Talking Cars Tuesday

Submitted by JeepinBen on

Back on Tuesday this week, hooray! There was a bit of confusion about last week, but I'll try to make the thread topic a bit clearer.

So, this week, you get to pick 3 cars for your hypothetical garage, from 3 decades (1 car per decade). Which ones do you pick? Will anyone pick a Malaise Era car? For Example, my garage:

  • 70's - 1978 CJ-8 Scrambler (My family hauler/rock crawler)
  • 80's - 1987 Porsche 959 (my everything)
  • 00's - 2008 Audi RS4 Avant (my dad-mobile/winter car)

Anyone taking the Beast of Torino? A Model T? An old Caddy?

I'm fairly tall, so the low windshield (or no windshield) doesn't work for me.  Plus, if the cars were too precious I might be afraid to drive them.  Finally, those cars look like they belong on the racetrack, while the 356A looks like it belongs on the street.

Granted, a street in Monte Carlo.  But still, a street.

I missed that part about the wagoneer in the original post.

To answer OP way late;

2016 Volvo XC90 for my family car

1964 356C Porsche

1958 Jaguar XK150 Convertible

2010 (cheat cause I want a 4th) Porsche 911 4S

My grandad and grandmother had a 356C porsche that we had to sell off because it was too much money to be able to enjoy driving around and cost in general. My other grandparents had a XK150 that my uncle now has that is rotting in florida.  I'd want both for sentimental reasons. I love the new Volvo SUV, and would want that to drive the family around in it. The 911 4s would be my everyday no kids car that I can drive year round with some winter wheels. I'd buy used because this things going to get used and is going to see salt.

I'd technically need one more car for my wife's daily driver, but would let her pick it out. Maybe the new Jaguar SUV.

For no good reasons, I have all my lottery cars picked out and ready to go.

1938 Ford Pickup

1963 Shelby Cobra (tough decade for me but this is my dream car)

2006 Zonda Roadster F

If I coudl add 1 more it would be a 1942 Willys MB

From the 50's:  A 1959 Eldorodo Biarritz convertable.  The pinnacle of 50's styling excess

From the 60's a 1969 GTO  Ram Air IV Judge convertible.  The king of 60's muscle cars IMO.

From the 70's a 1974 DeTomoso Panetera - yes I know they overheated a lot but man what performance & styling.

Picking 3 cars was harder than I thought it was going to be.

70's - 1970 Camaro SS (first muscle car I rode in)

90's - ER34 Nissan Skyline (the sedan version of R34 thought it was the coolest thing growing up)

now - 2016 Lincoln MKX. (The McConaissance)

I'm really torn on the newer ones, they're just too much like driving a computer. The older ones still had a lot of tech (especially the R34), but you still have a manual gearbox and that wonderful, very tuner-friendly RB26 engine.

Breaking topic rules but I have a question. I'm looking at getting a wrangler. I have always wanted one. When with the family we almost always take the wife's suv so I want a 2 door. I love the Rubicon HR model but it is a bit pricey. Still within my range, but at the high end. My questions. Is this a terrible idea since I will never take it "off road"? Which model will best suit my boring suburban life?

Full stop. It will be expensive as hell to buy (new or used). However... it could be a "fun" car, in that it's a convertible. Do not get a Rubicon. You do not need it. Even if you have it for 5 years and decide to start off-roading, doing so with a less capable rig will be better. No one starts off racing in Formula 1, you start slow in karts. Start offroading with a base Wrangler to get your feet wet.

The Sahara will be the "nicest". One of the special trims will probably get you an options package you want.

For your boring suburban life? Buy something that isn't a wrangler (they're terrible on gas, as cars, etc... but they look awesome!). If you want to make an irrational fun purchase and get the Jeep anyway? Look at the Freedom Edition.

Of course I don't "need" it. I drive an A4 now that is fun to drive. I drive like 12 miles a day. I think a wrangler would be a blast. Again we drive around mostly in my wife's SUV so this is just a get around vehicle for me. I think you answered my main question though. The Rubi looks badass, but I guess I just don't need it. I'll consider a loaded Sahara maybe. Thanks.

my most fun road trips was from grad school at Purdue back to CO in my 1997 Wrangler.  All that steel plate underneath (along with good tires) makes cruising 80-90 MPH smooth, and having the hard top made it fairly quiet.  It had a straight 6 but had lots of power.

I drove so fast that American Express declined my card at a gas station in Nebraska on the determination of an algorithm that "it's not possible to drive from W. Lafayette to Grand Island in that short a period of time."  Well, beg to differ, yes it is.

Full disclosure, we did then live in the high country west of Boulder, and I loved the backcountry.  But I could totally see owning one if not.  In fact, I'm strongly considering it now.

90's:  1994 Toyota Supra Turbo

00's:  2000 Lotus Elise 190 Motorsport

1930 Bentley Speed 6 "Blue Train"--Maybe my favorite car ever....sadly, will never own one.

1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Sport Coupe--My Dad's favorite car ever...I miss the old timer.

1994 Lamborghini Diablo--Got to ride in one with the President of Lamborghini USA back then.  Never been in a car that went that fast.  The guy would not let me drive it.  Probably for the best.

Forgot about the XKE.  I plan on buying one that's all beat to shit and restoring it some day, but with a modern drivetrain / suspension / electrical system, etc.

Unfortunately, the least expensive one I've ever found was around 20k, and I'd like to pay about half of that.  I need to find one that doesn't have an engine or trans.
