Northern Lights - Saturday Night Drinking Thread
Mates,
I wouldn't have bothered starting a thread, but I know many of us really like to see the Northern Lights, and tonight they are supposed to be out in force such that many in the lower 48 might see them. For any who haven't ever seen them, or haven't lately, do yourself a favor and if the skies are clear over you tonight, take a look. They are awesome and a picture doesn't begin to show how awesome they are:
I hope you had an exceptionally fun and/or productive Saturday. FWIW I got my corn fields disc'd up, so I got that going for me. Lots of other stuff, but with all the kids it's not fair since I can task them in bunches. Have a great night.

EDIT: The Tigers also won today, having won 4 straight after cratering for 9 games. If the Orioles hang on to their lead, the tigers will only be 2 games out.
The skies over Dexter are shrouded in a heavy overcast. I'm sure they will be lovely though.
It is pouring rain inCharlotte so definitely won't see the Northern Lights
But the wife and I just ate grilled ribeyes and baked potatoes along with a Kim Crawford Pinot
when you have a winning dinner like that.
Is true. Perfect night
Clear-ish in KC but I'm not sure they'd stretch down that far, unfortunately.
Anyone every had Indian Wells brewing? Had it for the first time yesterday. Not bad.
If we see them, something bad is happening.
not aurora borealis?
It happens, believe it or not. Not often, and not as spectacular as up north, but they've been seen as far south as Miami.

but at least the rain stayed away from my nephew's graduation in Michigan Stadium today. Lots of references to Harbaugh and Michigan State in the various speeches.
Speaking of northern drinking, Northern Latitudes distillery north of Traverse City makes a good variety of spirits, and if you like unusual botanicals in your gin, Jack Pine Gin is tremendous. A good friend and design colleague created some of the labels, including the one for Jack Pine.
Been overcast with off and on showers in Lansing all day, and we're looking at showers all night. Would have been nice to smoke a little herb and check them out. Oh well.
So as a horse farmer I am hesitant to trust you but I will take a look to see if I can see them from NLP

i bet you milk armadillos, too.
love horses, they just don't have a use for our farm. would love to have some, but there isn't enough time to take care of them on top of all the other activities of a larger-than-average family.
Unfortunately the armadillos don't produce milk at 15 below, but we keep trying. The horses however have some market value. The only time it's hard is in the frozen mid-winter.

Lol! Classic!
You definitely don't see them here in southeastern Michigan much if at all, and indeed it is raining tonight, so sadly looking up will only produce a wet sensation.
Of course, by me, you have enough light pollution from Detroit Metro Airport that observing anything in the sky is an iffy proposition. We've got a telescope but we almost need to go out to the Metroparks near us to get detailed observations.
I see plenty of stars in the early morning near DTW - they all seem to be shooting stars, though.

Really fast ones too
today because I'm getting old. I went to 3 stores to compare them. What am I drinking tonight? Heavily.
Raining here in Brighton, of course. Boo.
At least I have some New Holland Incorrigible and Wild Turkey Rare Breed to drown my sorrows.
Bulleit Rye Whiskey...makes me feel good.

cranberry and lime juice
But a commercial convinced me to buy a can of Pepsi 1893 Ginger Cola to mix with Bourbon and Mint.
Surprisingly good - somewhere between a Julep and a Dark & Stormy.
first bottle all I could taste was the 9% ABV, but each successive bottle has revealed nice flavor....oh, and I'm happy the Leafs won the draft lottery and that so many Wolverines have found new homes!
I don't put much stock in "smelling" a beer, but Scream has a better aroma than any other brew I can recall. And more importantly, it Tastes Great (but not Less Filling).

Scream is amazing.
21st Amendment brew Free or Die with a brand new adopted puppy in my lap. She's a beautiful terrier mix, wish I could imbed a pic from my phone but I'm incompetent.
it's the simple things in life
Photobucket is the old standby, but anywhere works so long as you can get the image address.
Also - Embed.
Thanks, I'll try, but doubt I'll succeed from my phone. Also, I think both spellings are acceptable. Which is odd.

No. No they are not.

Actually, according to OED, though embed is more common, imbed precedes it.
that we brought back from Alabama on our spring break. Not bad, not great..

Lake Superior Kayak Kölsch and Bent paddle brewing Pilsner, and they are amaizing.
Duluth, maybe?
That's a very good Kolsch. I haven't tried the Bent Paddle Pilsner, but I love their ESB and IPA.

We are borealis-impoverished here in CO due to cloud cover. Yet another time to envy our friends back in the Wolverine State.
Thanks for posting. Wish I were back home.

get that plane up and over the cloud cover. i remember showing my newlywed bride the northern lights one night when we were flying into marquette (as passengers). she had never seen them before. we went out to lake superior immediately upon clearing the airport and she got a full-on dose of the northern lights. not one of those things you forget even now, decades later.
and colorado might not be michigan, but it is a great state.

8 hours from bottle to throttle. So that would be after dawn for me (grin).
Except as a passenger at 37k feet, I've never seen Superior from the air. You're very fortunate to see the lights and the sights locally. I will do that from the left seat eventually though--probably dropping off or en route back from the MGoJunior's dorm moves. And fly over the Big Mac. That one is big on the list!

he and mom get married in '53 and honeymoon on mackinac island, staying at the grand hotel. he meets a guy there who has a plane and ends up offering to let my dad take it up and fly mom all around for a flight-seeing tour. and so dad showed mom the U.P. (she was a yooper) and the big lakes from the air. of course this predates the big mac by a few years. what a different world back then, 'hey, go ahead, take my plane. see you when you get back and we'll have a beer'.

I can totally connect to this sentiment. Those were the days of aviation and flying was flying and not just being a computer operator. I miss my days in the Herc.
Props to the props..... toasting you with some Talisker right now.
My brother was a loadmaster on C-130s and 124s when he was in the AF Reserves back in the '70s. I always check them out when they visit Willow Run during airshows.
my last week down here before going home for the nice months that I take the last week off. I put it off last night and so tonight starts that long road back. I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to shut it off and on like that one of these years, but by then will it matter/
Glad you got a lot of work done and hope the lights shire bright.

Only rain in Toledo tonight. Just finished stone ruination imperial ipa 2.0. It was pretty good.

Grilled with friends for dinner, so drank a bunch of different things, winding down now with a Downeast Cider.
