OT: Shaving Talk

Submitted by ScruffyTheJanitor on

In the spirit of "Offseason LOL," I thought I would see how the people of this board generally shave the various hairs on their bodies.

I have been hoping to find something cheaper than the Gillete line of products, as I only have to shave 2-3 times per week. I have tried Harry's, Dollar Shave Club, and Shick. I have to say: NONE of these options are any good. Harry's was the worst, followed closely by Dollar Shave club. I had to sharpen the blades in both cases, and even then I had to stop and clean out the bladed about every other swipe. They also cut my face up like I was shaving with a cheese grater. The Gillete stuff is expensive, but a 1.5 month old blade still was better than these other options.

I think I may try a saftey razor next; is it worth the trouble?

Same razors DSC uses.  Plus you can google Dorco coupons and get an even cheaper discount.  I ordered the Pace plus Combo set (razor handle plus 10 blades) which is the same as DSC Executive set for less than $12.  I use the 6 blade razor and I've had no problems with the Dorco blades.

Dab a little peanut butter on the muzzle of the shotgun when it was time to retire an old dog. Skippy would start licking away and then BAM POW doggy heaven.

I'll have to try the peanut butter and canine with my balls. Although I hope peanut butter doesn't get stuck in my holes. I'm bad enough at bowling as it is.

I make up about half of the entire $55 annual membership fee in savings on Gillette blades alone. Plus, like you I'm shaving 3 times per week so one package from Costco lasts most of the year.

I use fusion pro-glides from Costco. I shave every day M-F (hooray legit 5 o'clock shadows. I'm usually asked on Sunday if i'm growing a beard).

They're not too expensive that way and they last me about a month.

These blades seem to be the only kind that don't tear my face up. I always get them on eBay.

Electric razors are an absolute no go for me as they cause crazy breakout on my neck.

Still searching for the best shave cream/gel after all these years, though.

Dude, you must have had the low end razor from DSC.  I have the Executive which has 6 blades.  I am a hairy mammal.  Now granted I only use the razor twice before switching cartridges, but I also shave my head with it.  It is easily the best razor i have ever used and at $9 a month for 4 cartridges, still way cheaper than any of the good disposables (used a Schick Hyrdo prior to joining DSC).  I highly recommend DSC, but you need to get the Executive.

Shave in or after showering for the closest shave with the fewest cuts. Your blades will last longer too because you can get away with a slightly dull blade when shaving softer skin.

I don't take my own advice and shave before the shower because I want to wash any hair or blood away after I shave. As a result I go through more blades. I keep an eye on blades at Meijer and buy a lot when they go on sale. Gillette Fusion Pro Glide. Expensive but they work.

I have been shaving my head and face (and I have a pretty large noggin) for nearly 15 years now. I was a Gillette guy, but got tired of spending close to $20 a month on blades. I joined DSC, and went with the executive. A better shave than anything I ever got through Gillette, and cheaper to boot. Even with my beautiful round head, I thought that the flex-ball would be a necessity. Nope. Maybe it is time to go back and ask your mom to teach you how to shave again.

Probably worth pointing out there facial hair can very greatly in thickness, strength, direction, and groupings of directions.  Some solutions can work excellent for some people and for others be more akin to rubbing crushed glass on their face.

For myself, the 5-6 blades razors are basically useless, likewise for every electric I've tried (which is basically all of them).  I tend to have thick/strong but very pliant facial hair and the 5/6 blade razors just do about f all at cutting it regardless of the shaving gel/cream used.  Single/double blades however work extremely well.

So, no one should assume that just because a product works for them that it will work for anyone else.
