Softball beats OSU 8-0 in 6, Betsa records 13 Ks again

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Alumni Field was sold out tonight for a Friday night game against OSU. As it is for the next two days.

The crowd saw a great game and the second straight game in which Megan Betsa recorded 13 strikeouts.

That's 26 strikeouts in the last two days, folks.

It was a little bit of a pitcher's duel for four and a half innings. Then came the bottom of the fourth.

In a key at-bat, Kelly Christner reached on an OSU error to lead off the inning. After Aidan Falk walked,  Abby Ramirez drove in Christner with a single down the left field line to give Michigan the 1-0 lead.

In the top of the 5th, Betsa got into a bit of a jam. First batter walked and the second leaned into a pitch to put two on with none out. A couple minutes later it was bases loaded with just one out.

Michigan rallied as Betsa came back from 3-0 with bases loaded to strike out the OSU batter. The next batter popped out to Aidan Falk who made an amazing play behind homeplate, nearly falling into the netting on the on-deck circle.

The 5th inning proved to be a turning point in the game, as it was just two days ago for the Wolverine bats. After Monte and Christner walked, Aidan Falk blasted one into center field for a 3-run homer to give Michigan a 4-0 lead. She made two outstanding plays in both the top and bottom of the 5th.

After Betsa went 1-2-3 in the 6th which included two strikeouts, Michigan started rolling offensively.

Susalla tripled which scored Romero, and Blanco doubled to score her. Monte smacked one into center field which scored pinch runner Mary Sbonek, and then Aidan Falk ended the game with a walkoff single. The ball was bobbled and lost by the OSU shortstop which allowed Monte to score.

Michigan wins 8-0 in 6 innings via the run rule.

Michigan is now 31-4 and 9-2 in the B1G. The second game of the series is tomorrow at 2pm.

Great to see Betsa racking up the Ks again.  I know the B10 doesn't exactly bring the murderer's row of batting orders to the plate, but you can only play the teams on the schedule.  It seems like she's starting to figure out how to get those big Ks with the new points of emphasis this season.  If she can continue on this track leading into the post-season, maybe she can reclaim that "ace" role that she's been ear-marked for for some time.

Tomorrow is my first game as coach of my son's little league team. Is there a gender-neutral term for first baseman? I've never thought of it before, but I don't want to subliminallly crush the dreams of the girls on the team--especially because one is like our best player. In women's softball how are the players who play 1B, 2B, and 3B referred to? Help a sensitive Michigan Man out!

1. Michigan (9-2)
2. Ohio State (9-2-1)
3t. Penn State (9-3)
3t. Minnesota (9-3)
5. Wisconsin (7-4-1)
6t. Nebraska (7-5)
6t. Northwestern (7-5)
8t. Purdue (5-7)
8t. Indiana (5-7)
10. Illinois (4-8)
11. Maryland (3-7)
12. Michigan State (3-8)
13. Rutgers (2-8)
14. Iowa (1-11)

It's a 23-game schedule, so we are pretty much at the halfway point.  The top 4 are within a half game right now, which means that it's all about racking up the wins.  Michigan has 2 left with Ohio State and 3 more with Penn State, but Minnesota's only tough remaining series is at home against Nebraska.

The home plate umpire was terrible.  Hutch was warned in the first inning after complaining about balls and strikes.  OSU got a similar warning later in the game.

In spite of that, Betsa kept her cool.  We've seen her get rattled in bad situations before and become her own worst enemy.  Now, when she didn't get the strike call she deserved she just smiled, shook her head and went back to work, even while the game was still close.

This is a professional looking write-up WD. Have you been practicing sportswriting? Not sarcasm, serious question. Unless this is from an article.

I'd love to be able to watch replays on mgovideo or some other place.  I'm a tv cord cutter without a reliable access to btn2go on Charter.  I subscribe to BTN plus and can stream the ESPN's, but the series are usually split between btn2go and BTN plus!  Any suggestions?
