Series History: Michigan Leads 87-46

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - A rivalry that dates back to the administration of President Benjamin Harrison (1889-93) will be renewed at 6:05 p.m. (ET) Tuesday, when the No. 17 Michigan Wolverines invade Frank Eck Stadium for a showdown with the University of Notre Dame baseball team.

The matchup will pit two streaking teams against each other, as the Irish (15-11, 6-6 ACC) enter with victories in seven of their last eight games, while the Wolverines (20-5, 3-0 Big Ten) sport a nine-game winning streak.

On the mound, the Irish are set to turn to midweek starter Michael Hearne (2-0, 3.67 ERA), who has earned the win in two of the three previous midweek games this season. Michigan will send LHP William Tribucher (1-0, 1.65 ERA) to the mound.

Typical ESPN. Stream not working now. Laggy when it is.

Guess I'll just follow along on tweetdeck.

I don't know, it was a guy sitting the stands typing on his phone and it was after a home run by the opponent. I refreshed mgo and you had just posted so I thought it was you.

Kinda funny, but I was sitting about 20 feet away from Greg Mattison for 2 innings before I noticed it was him, even though he was in the same row one aisle over, sitting alone.   And even then, I only noticed him while looking in the direction of the Michigan dugout , while watching a group of  Michigan players that were not in the game returning to the dugout after between-innings stretching exercises in shallow rightfield.

As I made eye contact, he grinned as if realizing he had been spotted; I think he caught what must have been a surprised look on my face.  Being that it was still between innings, I slid a couple seats over but then realized he was talking to a couple other Michigan fans seated two rows behind him.

I ended up waiting until the end of that inning before striking up a conversation, starting off by nervously saying, "Coach Mattison, right?" , to which he answered "yes, that's me!" as he laughed.   I told him I was very surprised to see him there, asking if he's in the area recruiting, to which he answered not this time, that he and his family were enjoying a few days off at his cottage at a nearby lake in Michigan (he told me the name of the lake, but I'm keeping that to myself in the interest of protecting his privacy).   Then we discussed briefly the ongoing baseball game and I mentioned how the weather seemed much more football-appropriate, he answered  something along the lines of "any weather is football weather but this is NOT baseball weather".

I then thanked him for his role in bringing defense back to Michigan Football over the last few seasons and told him how excited I am about our "D" unit for the upcoming season.  He thanked me and assured me that he's excited about it, too, but then added that they have a lot of work to do yet between now and the start of the season.

I was looking for an opportunity to ask him if there were any other local kids he was recruiting, but the conversation never got steered back in that direction,  not giving me a real opportunity to inquire about  Corey Malone-Hatcher or get any inside details about the recruitment of Phillip Paea (from just up the road in Berrien Springs).

Coach Mattison stuck around after that for about another 1 1l2 innings or so before leaving.  At that point, as he was leaving he told me it had been a pleasure to meet me but that he had to head out for dinner plans.  Finished the conversation by telling me 'Go Blue!'

All-in-all, G-Matt seemed to be a very likeable guy; I can see why the kids he's recruited and coached are so happy to play for him.

I get saving the experienced pitchers for B1G games which really matter, but the bats aren't being hidden away.

Disappointing. Hopefully we wake up against bowling green and kill them.

traditional rivals in general for major sports. Even more so than usual in a given year. That being said, the progress overall makes up for it and is worth and we lose very little to attrition in the major sports

Don't look now....

Michigan has plated 4 runs in the 8th. Still down but this is a 4 run game now.

Michigan comeback falls short, 5-9. Record is now 20-6.

Will be looking to rebound tomorrow at home against Bowling Green at 4pm.

After a 9 game win streak, it's good that the streak ended in non-conference against a non-RPI killer team. Got the loss out now rather than an important conference game.

3-0 in the B1G. #27 in the RPI today and ND is in the ACC which is a strong conference.
