Lacrosse Takes Terps to the Wire, Fall 8-7 at Home

Submitted by L'Carpetron Do… on

Men's lacrosse kicks of Big Ten play vs the Terps this afternoon in the Big House.  Michigan has had a week and a half off to prepare for what will likely be their toughest Big Ten opponent.

If recent losses are any indication, Michigan should be in for a long afternoon.  Maryland is now 6-2 with their only losses to Yale and ND, probably the two best teams in the country.

Hopefully Michigan can at least play well enough to stay in it and make the Terps earn it.

Game is on Big Ten Network!  Go Blue!

No Jackson or King again, but the offense still looks good. Maryland can't be happy with its defense. Logan with some good saves and Lott holding his own on FOs. And good rides for Michigan.

Man, wish I had access to BTN right now.  My dad even callled me before and told me Michigan was looking good.  4-3 at half is an accomplishment in itself.  Go get em boys!

Just wasn't enough firepower with King & Jackson out again. They played a good physical game. Logan was great in 1st half. Cleared well most of the game but a crucial failure led to MD 7th Goal. The situation that led to a man down and Terps 5th goal was bogus.

Wow dude. Relax. Maryland is easily a top 5 team this year and we lost in the last minute of the game WITHOUT our top two point getters on the team.

I think it's safe to say that this was an acceptable (and expected) loss.

I don't think JP should stick around, but I have no issues at all with the game today. I think you just need a chill pill. JP losing to a top 5 team in the final minute of a game has no bearing on his seat getting hot.

This is a top team that has been playing for decades and consistently puts out championship-caliber teams. We've been playing for five years, and while I get that people are upset that we're not competing for championships yet, try competing in recruiting with established powerhouses that have piled up Final Fours and Championships for decades. This is my main problem with everyone's complaints - we think about it as if the fact that we're four recruiting classes in means we should be winning all the time. It doesn't, nor should it. It takes longer than four years to build a reputation, and Maryland, Hopkins, Syracuse, and Virginia all walk in with decades of championship-caliber teams. We can't compare with that. It's different for football - Michigan has been dominant for literally centuries, and has an incredible pedigree for winning. The lacrosse team has five short years to build on. There's a little more nuance to it than I've seen the commenters on the board give credit.

Then consider we're short KJ and King, without question our two best offensive players on a team that knew that offense was going to be their main strength, and I have a hard time not being proud of these guys for taking a team as good as this team to the wire.

If JP's on the hot seat, this game has nothing to do with it. Hopefully this is a turning point and we're able to parlay this performance into 2-3 conference wins to get into the tourney.

I don't think the argument is that we should be competing for championships. But the program isn't where it needs to be. There are a few programs that are newer than ours and don't have the name brand that have had far better results.

That being said, the team played well today and it doesn't have an effect on how we should view the program. But losing to teams on the level of Marist and Dartmouth at this stage of the program is unacceptable.

At some point, you have to come to grip with the fact that our head coach is a club lacrosse coach and his winning percentage is at 22% after 5 years. Michigan can be better than that.

If we had this kind of effort going forward, I think we could consider this a turnaround heading into next year.

I am greatly concerned by what we have seen in the first half of the year and will continue to be concerned if we resume losing to bad teams or losing to good teams by double digit goals.

However, it is incredibly unfair to hold the 5-year total record against JP. I think we can forgive the terrible records from the first three years when we still didn't have D-1 athletes, can't we?

You can't hold a lacrosse team in its fifth year of existence to the same standard of Michigan's teams that have been around for much longer and have a much larger body of work.

There's much more to coaching than wins and losses (if you want more on that, let's talk about the tennis coach Brandon fired in BLL). We've spent years building culture and national standing in a sport where the parity has increased dramatically even since Michigan's first varsity season. You know what part of that culture is? You play the best - from the beginning - to be the best. For every blowout loss to North Carolina, there's a loss in overtime to a Cornell team that nearly went undefeated that regular season. For every blowout loss to Brown, there's a near-upset of a Maryland team we're not supposed to be in the same stadium with.

I'd suffer through ten more seasons of losing records if the culture JP builds sets us up for long-term success. Admittedly, I'm biased since I know the man, but I love his emphasis on developing a plan for sustained long-term success. Anybody who watched him flip the switch of the club program from being a top-ten program to a virtually unstoppable machine from 2008-11 knows where his head's at as he builds this program.

Again. I'm not holding Michigan to that standard. I don't expect us to be able to hang/beat the North Carolinas or Marylands of the world at this point. But to lose to Marist and Dartmouth was pretty pathetic. It's not that we should be a dominant program, it's that 5 years in we are still losing to bottom feeders.

I'm not all that amazed by the new programs. Richmond for example got shutout today against UVA. A few of those programs had signature wins already, but today or the Cornell game could have gone our way, and then so would we. We've still had some pieces of the puzzle missing the past few years, which some of those teams got via transfers.

Considering we did this without KJ and King and Hatton on defense is fantastic. Really impressed by a lot of the young guys, and Lott was a beast today. Kraus has really emerged too.

The only complaint I really have is on the defense this year, but today they played well and seem to be getting better each week. Last week WD claimed it would basically be impossible for us to get a conference win this year, but today just goes to show the potential these guys have.

Was a fun game to watch and definitely a tough loss. Great effort and definitely not something to truly freak out over. I don't follow to closely but it has to take some time to build a program. Seemed like every other player on the field today was a freshman and they looked good against a top 5 team. Hopefully things come to fruition sooner rather than later with the program.

I didn't see the game , but from the updates I was getting from my dad, Michigan was playing hard and at times looking good.  He said Lott was nearly unstoppable on faceoffs.  And he said it was snowy as hell.

But, Michigan wasn't supposed to win this one, nor was it supposed to be close.  Especially, minus King & Jackson, that's an encouraging result.  It's about time they had a good loss (haven't been too much of those lately).

If they can hang with Maryland, maybe that's an encouraging sign for conference play.  I'd like to think so, but who knows with this team?  Maybe they can steal one from Rutgers next week. College lacrosse has been weirdly unpredictable this season so anything goes...
