Whetley leaving EMU

Submitted by Mr Noodle on

Here is a link to a Free Press article. For those of you who have the Freep on the "do not read list" it really says nothing more than Tyrone Wheatley accepted a job at Syracuse coaching the RBs. One might say this is a lateral move because that is what he was doing at Eastern, but I think just leaving EMU by most people's standards constitutes a promotion.

There has been a lot of chatter in the Michigan high school football coaching world about the program Mr. English (the Architect of the Disaster)is running at EMU. None of it is good. I think T.Wheatley is getting out at a good time.

Can you elaborate further on what the knock on English (at EMU) is? All I know about it is that he was telling Sam and Ira on WTKA that he felt he had a really good class coming in this year.

this use of "irregardless" provoked my grammar-nazi reflex, and this is something I read on dictionary.com about the word:

Usage Note: Coined in the United States in the early 20th century, it has met with a blizzard of condemnation for being an improper yoking of irrespective and regardless and for the logical absurdity of combining the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term. Although one might reasonably argue that it is no different from words with redundant affixes like debone and unravel, it has been considered a blunder for decades and will probably continue to be so.

and at least it is a word.

"usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that “there is no such word.” There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead."

Considering Scout.com started their 2011 top 120 countdown (check it out -- they are up to 75... no Big 10 Teams yet), they named Eastern as #120... literally last place.... Going to the Big East is a good move.

From what I have heard, which I understand is hearsay, there has been a rift amongst people in the EMU program regarding philosophy and recruits. In particular, the handling of a number of local recruits (offering scholarships and then pulling them) and the manner in which a number of kids on the current roster have been treated. I don't know names, but two different coaches have said this to me on two different occasions.

"there has been a rift amongst people in the EMU program"

Um . . . where have I heard this before.

Seriously, someone from Washtenaw county needs to check the water supply to see if it's been tampered with.

My money is on the Penguin.

You were really fishing for a vote, one way or another.

You make a good point. That is, if you are going to be an internet grammar queen, you really should watch your own errors and typos. Good catch.

However, adding douche at the end was, well, a douche move.

In the end you earned a +1 from me.... barely.

1 - +1 for being Mr. Noodle. I have become exposed to him through my two year old daughter, and I get a kick out of him.

2 - I have no inside anything about EMU, but when I looked at their class in the paper the other day and saw the almost complete lack of local players, I was pretty amazed. Doesn't seem like a good way to establish a following.

Wheatley and his family live in the same elementary school area as me (though his house is, shall we say, on the much better side of the tracks!). Great family; sad if they all go to the 'cuse.

As we all know too well, problems arise when a new regime takes over (particularly amongst the upper classmen). Eastern is no different.....except.....they're Eastern.....and they didn't win a game last year. Their senior QB (Kyle McMahon) who played a considerable amount (including a handful of starts over the last 3 years) was bypassed for a true freshmen in the Michigan game when the starter went down.

No surprise, McMahon has transferred to GVSU for his final year of eligibility. Wheatley leaving doesn't bode well for EMU. He has roots in Michigan and was a decent recruiter in the area....particularly for a program like the HurEagle.

I know a starting olineman for EMU. He said English isn't making any friends at EMU among players families or upperclass players. He basically asked a player to "call out" teammates that he felt wasn't working hard enough during a team meeting.

Yes, I know English doesn't have to be "friends" with his players, but they have to want to play for him. and its not happening.

The whispers are that EMU is forever doomed to obscurity on account of offending the Huron tribe by abandoning its name in favor of "Eagles." The tribe has called upon the Great Spirit to punish EMU football in response. By contrast, CMU has retained the goodwill of the Chippewa tribe (and in turn, the Great Spirit) and has prospered.

Seriously, it was lame that EMU stopped being the Hurons. The Huron tribe was in favor of the name - they considered it an honor.

I hope that Ron English goes 0-36 and gets fired from Eastern Michigan after three seasons. I still haven't forgiven him for that epic fiasco in Columbus in 2006 and the disaster against Appalachain State, and I probably never will.
