Off season Freddie J. on Lloyd story

marc_from_novi commented that he would like to sit and have a beer with Freddie J.  Since it's the off season, here's a little story about doing just that.

A group of us were sitting in a hotel lounge the night before the Penn State game in '97.  Fred was jovial to say the least, every few minutes saying, "We're gonna crush these guys."  He was reeling off story after story.  My favorite one was this:

"...so Tai (Streets) comes off the field and his finger's broken.  I mean, you can see the bone sticking out.  That finger's broken.  So he goes to sit down and Lloyd looks down at him and yells, 'What's the matter Streets?  Aren't you tough?  Get back out there!'  The bone is sticking out of his finger.  You can see it. Man!  But back out he goes."

Fred was cracking up the whole time.

Bo and Jerry Hanlon were elsewhere in the lounge, but I was more than content listening to Fred.  I've learned he sometimes doesn't let the truth stand in the way of a good story, but that makes the stories all the better.  So while my story is true -- Fred actually said those words -- you might want to verify the finer details of the actual event.

Fred's a great guy.  Too bad I've moved to Florida...

I would have to think that likely, he meant you could see through the skin where it was broken, not that the bone was sticking out of the skin.

Otherwise, that sounds about right.

One of the first times I ever had a sideline pass to a college football game, I learned very quickly that I didn't have the stuff to play this game.

A DB broke up a pass and was late getting up. When he did, he was coming over to the sideline where I was standing. He was holding his hand and when he got closer, I could see the second, third, and fourth fingers were standing up at right angles to the rest of his hand. He had dislocated them and was trying to get the glove off so the coaches could pop them back in place.

The coaches weren't ready to sub anyone in, so they were frantically trying to wave him back into position.

The guy runs back to his safety spot and, of course, the next play comes right to him. The guy made the hit and THEN ran over where the coaches grabbed his fingers and YANKED to pop them back.

Yanking is still the most efficient way to relocate a disloated finger. The doctors do the same thing if you wait that long. I have had two dislocations; one was popped back by a gym teacher at Huron and the other by a drunk at a bar. Both were equally efficient, and the finger shows no after-effects. Around forty years later, the joint has no arthritis and is in proper proportion with the other fingers.

Amazing isn't it? I dislocated my ring finger in elementary school pretty bad. For some reason my mom, who's a nurse, happened to be there that day (still no idea why) and was in the hall when I went to go get some help. She just said, "I'll take care of that!" *POP* Taped it up for a day or two and it was good as new.

If you watch the video closely of Jason Avant's touchdown in the corner of the end zone during the Michigan State game in '04, you see that he kind of sits in the corner for a second facing away from the field before he turns around and goes back to the bench.

That's because he was yanking a dislocated finger back into place.

having broken every finger save my left thumb in football and basketball, I can relate. I've always had the trainers tape them up and get back in there. no one wants to be the next Wally Pipp.
