Caris Has Another Surgery
This was announced last night and I can't believe that it hasn't been posted yet. It's almost like there is cloud of guilt surrounded his name on this board.

I feel terrible for him. He's been snake-bitten around here for a couple of years.
Also, I hope all the people saying he was just saving himself for the NBA draft admit that maybe he was still hurt.

injuries and then get corrective surgery after the season concludes all the time.

What's your point? Are implying Caris took the season off??

was suggesting that some posters questioning why Levert wasn't playing (which I was not one of, btw) should feel guilty now that he has had surgery. I was making an observation that just because a player ends up getting surgery after all doesn't mean he couldn't have played while dealing with the injury. Not saying that Levert could have played as we have no real idea of his injury, but its true that it is not unusual for guys to play hurt and delay surgery. In Levert's case I totally understand why he ended up getting shut down for the season, even if he could have managed to play a few minutes a game, because of his pro potential and future to consider. It was obviously an incredibly difficult decision for him to deal with as you could see how much he wanted to be out there playing.
You just insinuated that you were tough enough to play through your injuries so clearly you could play through the same injury Caris has. Because you're some kind of oracle who knows this shit.

are just an asshole on the internet looking for attention.
Dude. I couldn't even do my job with a broken/injured foot and I sit at a desk all day. You don't know the situation.
if you have ever broken your foot before, but if you haven't, when I was in college I had mine crushed by a forklift and managed to do grunt work for a construction company shoveling through rock hard dirt all summer without missing a day. I think you would be able to manage sitting at a desk!
Sounds like you must have had a strong and healthy back and arms, and could wear strong supportive shoes or boots giving you a stable base for bending and shoveling, so bravo for your grit and dedication. [I could probably type well with a broken back, seated with my back in a sturdy brace, but I certainly couldn't shovel and bend and tote.]
But a basketball player doesn't simply stand solidly on his feet. At least not one who's expected to play at this level. Unless he's a free-throw specialist...
could effectively play basketball in that condition, just that Kevin could manage to sit at his desk ;)
I like this free-throw specialist idea, if that ever catches on in the NBA I might have a chance!
I'm going to go out on a limb and assume it was more than just something corrective, especially given the fact it is so close to the NBA draft.
Not cool. Why even have Doctors then. Short tee disability is a real thing. You sound like someone from 19th century.
And then they have short careers because they drastically increased the damage while doing so. Take it from a guy who made that terrible mistake. Caris made the correct decision, as did the staff.

maybe in the Pros...but he doesn't owe UM anything if that meant putting himself at further risk for (worsening?) injury or sacrafice future career earnings.
ALso, your an ass
Not on their foot. Broken foot bone or plantar fasciitis, he was right to not play. Any smart bballl player this injuries should not play: it'll ruin them.
suuuuuucks when combined with basketball. All that jumping = ouch!
Had a jones fractured followed by plantar fasciitis!! It was a long time with a knee scooter and pain!!

this dumbass twice what I'm wonderring?
it is true!
He never said this is what Caris should have done or anything like that.
Just stating a fact and saying what I would have done, but I'm not normal!
I'm going out on a limb and assuming one of those votes is the poster's.
But yeah, people always like to think they are tougher than athletes because to admit that these players are both tougher AND more talented than a guy whose glory ended long ago is hard to swallow for some.
vote, I got majorly nuked!

This is why I'm never mad when a college player leaves early for a pro contract.
Hopefully Caris and his family took out an insurance policy for his senior year

foot transplant?

Is there something wrong with our basketball training staff? Why did he play against Purdue? He didn't look right that game and now he needs another surgery. Feel really bad for Caris. Hopefully he can recover and have a solid pro career

Hard to conclude anything since they still AFAIK haven't given us a single clue as to what is actually wrong. The unnecessary radio silence from Beilein about this all year was the most annoying thing to me.
Of course the most important thing is health for Caris and his future. But it would be nice now to have a bit more info so we can evaluate how this was handled.
March 27th, 2016 at 12:55 PM ^
Hard to conclude anything, but since speculation is sort of what happens on boards, and they haven't given us anything else, it's not wrong to speculate.
I also wonder what happened with Purdue. And why didn't he get surgery earlier? I wonder if he was hoping he might be able to return if we went further in the tournament.
Best of luck to Caris. I think he will be a long time pro if he can stay healthy. He's very adaptable and could fit into roles that a team needs.
Unnecessary? You don't know the situation. Beilein can't share detailed medical information publicly without his permission, right? Well maybe Caris didn't want him to.

Stress fractures are tricky to treat; they are mostly overuse injuries so the vast majority of times rest and bracing will get rid of the symptoms.
Surgery really only is indicated when conservative treatment fails...99% of the time.
March 27th, 2016 at 12:28 PM ^
The article says the medical advice they had received Jan/Feb said that it wasn't unreasonable to hope the issue would heal without surgery and that would be the only way he could potentially play this season. Whatever the problem is, it didn't heal as hoped. Sucks for him because now there's no way he'll be able to participate in any NBA workouts. I would imagine that also erases any shot at the first round.

Caris very possibly could have played thru his injury, he did come back for a cameo vs Purdue, but the combination of pain + not being 100% + pro asperations led to him shutting it down for the season. Totally understandable decision for him to make, and probably the right decision to make for his future, but if I was in his position I would have been on that court fighting through the discomfort to play my final year of college ball even if I could only play 10 minutes off the bench every game. I would have to be literally dragged off the court.
I understand why Caris and Spike made the decisions they did, but I personally would have finished my college career on the court and not end it early on the sidelines out of potential future health risks that may or may not happen.
March 27th, 2016 at 12:34 PM ^
You don't know and very likely will never know the amount of pain he was in. It's totally unfair for you to say you would have been playing through the injury.
are right that I don't know the extent of his injury. But I do know that every injury I have suffered from playing sports I played through. Badly shredded ankle in basketball, pulled hamstring and fractured elbow in baseball, and pitching with a damaged shoulder and elbow for years. I had to come out of games on a few occasions but was always back playing by the next one. I am highly competitive and always believed that no matter my condition I could find a way to help my team, even if it was just coming off the bench to hit key free throws at the end of a game. My teams were never particularly great and I knew they needed me out there playing.
You are a shining example to us all. Injured in innumerable ways, but because somebody didn't make the same life choices as you in completely different circumstances with wholly different stakes, you question his heart and dedication to a team.
i hate everything about you and all your posts. To imply Caris wasn't tough, or that he should have played through the pain, and then being an Internet tough guy by telling us all your fake injuries you fake played through, as if somehow that makes you tougher than Caris, is all bush league. It's pretty easy to throw stones at a player behind the anonymity of a message board-you're also a coward. You should have stopped at "you are right that I don't know the extent of his injury." Anything beyond that you are just judging him and being a dick
what I'm intending. I am NOT saying Caris isn't tough. He has played through injury before. I have posted that CARIS MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR HIS HEALTH AND ATHLETIC CAREER. I just happened to state that I, personally, would have played, not because I view myself as "tougher" than Caris (there is no way of knowing this) but simply because I HATE missing games! Its just what I have always done playing sports. Just a little personal factoid that yall are getting way too heated over. You guys are making it sound like I'm saying Caris ruined the season by being selfish and saving himself for the pros. I am not saying that at all and it isn't true!
Your post makes it sound like I am attacking Caris. HE IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLAYERS to suit up for the Wolverines! He passed up on the draft to return for his senior year only to have to deal with injury again. It sucks and I feel terrible for him and I hope he can be fully healthy and have a long and successful career in the NBA.
OP made a post implying that some mgobloggers should feel guilty over questioning why Caris was not playing earlier this season now that he has had surgery. Well at that time in the season there was a ton of mystery surrounding his injury and status. He was day-to-day. Then out two weeks. Then was back in the lineup only to be scratched last second. Out another week. Plays versus Purdue. Then suddenly out indefinitely. Then shut down for the season. It was a weird situation all around. My initial point in this thread was that just because a guy has surgery after the season doesn't mean he wasn't able to play earlier, and it was fair for fans to question Levert's status during the middle season when the team was changing it so much.

What part of "if I were Caris I would have fought through the pain" is the part where you didn't say Caris wasn't tough?
March 27th, 2016 at 12:59 PM ^
a real life decision you almost certainly never had to make. But easy for you to say from the comfort of your couch.
Knight has been blogging/jacking it while suffering from a serious case of carpal tunnel...dude plays through pain and (rightfully) demands the same from younger college athletes he has never met.
is pretty close to the one I experienced playing baseball. I didn't really have any pro potential (although in Spike's case I wouldn't have been surprised if he beat the odds and ended up having a pro career somewhere) and was dealing with a badly damaged pitching arm. Rather than end my career early in the hopes of not having as many lingering health issues, I decided to finish my career playing through the pain. I was nowhere near what I used to be but still was able to help my team. Years later my arm still has some occasional soreness and slight weakness, but nothing debilitating (yet) and I certainly wouldn't trade those memorable last couple of seasons on the diamond for an always pain-free arm.
There is no wrong decision, its up to every player to determine what is best for them. Caris and Spike made the choices that were right for them, and I totally understand why they made those choices. I would have wanted to play.
Let's be honest. Your playing career ended in middle school.
Spike having surgery on both his hips is totally like you never having surgery on you arm. Totally.
Please GTFO.
March 27th, 2016 at 10:18 PM ^
You realize that after every game last year, Spike had to be carried out of the locker room by his teammates and family members and shot up with painkillers because he was in so much unendurable pain that he couldn't even remain on his feet, right? This has been pretty well documented.
That's pain on a whole different level than a bum elbow. Like I stated farther up in this thread, I have the same condition as Spike. I played on as long as I could. Not only was my performance shitty, but I did irreperable damage that could have been avoided.
This stupid macho bullshit is everything I hate about sports.
Cool. Good to know you would have quickly and selflessly sacrificed millions of dollars in order to actually hurt the team by not recognizing your limitations. But luckily you aren't in the position to do that.
Seriously? "If (you) were in his position (you) would have been on the court fighting through the discomfort..." "(You) would have to be literally dragged off the court." Really? Aren't you special. Agian, sorry, but it's pretty easy to sit behind your computer on a public forum and say what you THINK you would have done had you been in that situation. The truth is, you have no clue what you would have done in Caris' situation because I doubt that you have ever been in the circumstance in which Caris found himself to even know what you'd do. But, hey, it IS America so we all have a right to our opinion, and I guess to even publish it on a public forum. My opinion is, I really don't care to hear what YOU would have done. It's really not important or relevant to this discussion.
because I always have played/worked through injuries I suffered. All of them, even if I had to hide the severity from coaches/trainers. Even if there was risk of harming my professional career, I am way too competitive and love playing the game too much to sit out. Seriously, I have always HATED missing my teams' games, and never did due to injury. I would have had my jersey on, constantly in my coach's ear saying I could play.
You're so awesome. I bet you have a lot of friends and you sit around talking about how tough you are. Cool bro
Sweet bro
