Dukes caught the only TD of last year's spring game against Dennis Norfleet

Per Harbaugh:

The departures of Dukes and Dawson bring Michigan to or under 85 depending on the status of the as-yet-unsigned Dytarious Johnson; if Canteen does not make it back they'd be at 84 and able to issue a scholarship to Ryan Glasgow.

ask the kids who's decision it was. ask harbaugh the same question. I'm confident the answer is the same and that it was the kids decision but i hate the air of suspicion people have about it. I'd rather we just address it head on and not have any uncertainty.

Even if you were to ask both parties, you wouldn't necessarily have a consensus.  You might have two medical opinions, one says the player has risk if he continues to play, the other no risk.  At that point, it's up to the coach who receives info from the docs and perhaps even the legal staff.

Remember, we seem to be allowing all medical departures to finish their degree at Michigan, and most of this is happening in early spring, unlike what Saban and some others do, when these decisions are made after fall practice commences.

I'm just going to have faith everything is on the up and up because I can't imagine the program telling kids to retire to free up scholarship spots. Not ours. If I'm wrong, that will make me incredibly sad.

I'm sure there will be at least one transfer. Just look at qb, at least one of the young ones will be unhappy. A junior will win the job, start for two years and then Peters or McCaffery (I am too lazy to check for correct spelling) will probably win the job, not much room for all of them. Kenny Allen will get his scholarship too.

Kids have the option to transfer, and from Michigan they could go a lot of places.  I think when they get a medical retirement at Michigan, it's because they are really hurt.

They want to PLAY their sport, it's what they've been doing their whole lives. And they should.

A friggin' college degree from Michigan isn't crap if you don't live in Michigan. 

Not to mention, look at all the "degreed" fanboys here. All kinds of "graduates"--and what has it gotten them?

Normally I'd agree with that too, but most guys will take the shot at playing somewhere else because they'll actually play somewhere else. Plus, several guys have transferred from Michigan recently and played at a small school and have made NFL rosters. Hard to say that dukes or others couldn't do that too if they wanted that shot.

I really dislike this logic. Glasgow's family's ability to pay should have nothing to do with him getting a scholarship.

For example: Two employees are performing the same job and you only have the budget to give one a raise. Does the employee with less assets deserve the raise, or the one with better job performance?

There's a remarkable correlation between being a disappointment when healthy and suffering these career-ending injuries, ever since Harbaugh showed up.  Really fabulous good luck from the perspective of roster management.

This is true, but not really the smoking gun you think it is. Fact is, a starter has more personal incentive to come back from injury than does a reserve. He might be looking at the NFL. He's certainly looking at more PT if he gets healthy. Whereas a reserve player when faced with the same injury will use that to his advantage -- free school, no more hurt. So while there is a correlation, it isn't always the school pushing the backup out. It's often the player calling his playing career quits. And I don't think anyone has a problem with that.

This take is spot on. By all accounts harbaugh is brutally honest with players on where they are in the depth chart. If at end of year meetings, the coaches tell a kid who has little to no shot of seeing the field because of skill and / or injuries, then it's reasonable for that player to call it quits rather than put himself through all the off season strength and conditioning, rehab, etc. to be a practice squad player in the fall. The kid may even ask, what's the best way he can help this program and be genuinely willing to end their career to help the team. Most people who really buy in to the team the team the team mentality would get that.

Nick Saban was called out for 'Bama having more medicals over a time period than the rest of the SEC COMBINED. If M starts to do that, I will back off Saban. If either of these kids think this is unjust I am sure we will hear about it ala Pipkins - a route that they have as an option also.

If you want to compete for NC's then you have to use every tool available. I have no problem with this. If a kid is free to transfer at anytime, then a school should be able to yank a scholarship at anytime. Welcome to adulthood life isn't fair. Harbaugh is paid to bring Michigan football to the top! I'm glad I have my season tickets, and know this program is in good hands! Go Blue!

There is a difference between "life isn't fair" (and I am sorry that you think your life isn't fair, but that's beside the point) and "a school should be able to yank a scholarship at any time."  The relationship between the player and the school is not reciprocal in any other way, so there is no need to insist that it be reciprocal in the ability to give up or rescind a scholarship.

If you really want to be a fan of a team that will win at all costs, then you should pay the cost of giving up your Michigan fan card and find a team that wins more and cares less.
