Anyone else hear about Lawtan Anderson possibly coming to Michigan?

Submitted by pullin4blue on

I was listening to the recruiting roundup this morning and thought I heard that Latwan Anderson had his offer from OSU rescinded. There was no discussion of what may have happened, but I know he did not sign with anyone yet. He lists U of M as one of his top choices and according to Sam Webb, there has been some conversations going on between Michigan and Latwan, but an offer will not be extended without a visit first.
If we have the scholarship to give would it be wise for us to go after a 4* athlete or save it for Offensive linemen next year?

I've given us about a 1 percent chance of landing Latwan...until I heard Sam Webb talking about it.

If this is true, this would be great news. Like Dorsey, Lawtwan would be a HUUUUUUUGE coup. Athletic and Football skills aside, the get would huge in breaking the Glenville pipeline and making a statement.

If we can get this kid on campus, I like our chances A LOT. The coaches proved their closing mettle with Dorsey...if they can get Latwan, the Tigers will have to sign RichRod as a closer to replace Fernando Rodney......this man can CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

He's a 5-star athlete on rivals. I can't believe that we wouldn't offer him a scholarship if he's interested. We might be tight on schollies for 2011, but it sounds like he would be worth it.

What I have been reading though, unfortunately, is that he'll most likely end up a Buckeye.

Wont believe it until he visits.

That said...of course you take this guy. We have one additional scholarship, and we were ready to give it to Sean Parker...and Latwan is a superior player. This is a no brainer.

He was asked on Wednesday if Ohio State could take/have room for another defensive back. His response was short and to the point. "No"

b/c Latwan has not signed with anybody no coach can speak about him but the reporter was basically asking about Latwan in a round-about way.

Last I read was he wanted to make a trip out to see USC and then pick between thema and West Virginia. I'll hold out a bit of hope we can land him.

I at least like the fact that RichRod won't extend an offer until/if he comes to campus for a visit personally.

I'm not here to make judgments about Latwan's character. If he visits and coach feels like he's a good enough kid to come to Michigan, then that's good enough for me.

There is a sliding scale based on a students core GPA at the DI level. I believe if you have higher then a 3.5 then you need a total combined score of 37 (out of 100) or something like a 12 out of 36 on your composite score.

So the question is what is Mr. Lawson's Core GPA

I won't beat on a guy because he isn't a great student and a great football player. Let's be honest, I want Michigan to win and I like it when we have a good mix of smart players as well, but not every player will be a great student. If we had a Academic Combine I am sure that most of us would get a few Fake's on our Calculus time or someone might get rated a 5th star on your physics. I won't bag on a kid because he isn't an Academic all-American on top of his physical skills.

Will you bag on him if he becomes academically ineligible or gets caught paying people to write papers for him or flunks out and disappears like Marques Slocum?

I mean, there IS a reason we have academic standards for athletes and colleges...

I understand, I don't want Michigan to bend its rules for a player, I want them to be able to handle the school. This really gets on to the topic of "student athlete" vs the "athlete" that happens to be listed as a student argument. I think the Big10 has done a much better job here than the SEC or some other conferences have. I would like us to maintain our standards.

If it is true that the problem is grades and ACT scores, then Southern Cal and Michigan are probably both out.

I'd look to the Big East: WVU, Cincinnati, Louisville, and the like.

All schools, even the top ones like Stanford, Mich, Northwestern, etc. have a certain number of non-standard spots for athletes. So long as the athlete can pass clearinghouse, the athlete can attend UofM or other schools. However, the admissions offices at schools like Stanford and UMich allow fewer of these spots available for the coaches to use than SEC schools, which can likely take all non-standard (i.e. below 50% in their high school class and/or below xx on the ACT). If we're recruiting him, we still have a non-standard spot left.

Have preferential treatment for athletes. They may say they don't, but they will take much lower GPAs/SATs/ACTs for athletes. Even the ivies do to a degree. Are you saying that they have no non-standard qualifying spots? Because, looking at Rivals right now, Stanford has plenty of players with median-range GPAs who would not get in if they didn't play football.
