OT: Alec Gallimore Announced as New Dean of Engineering
Slow day, anyone have any fun experiences with him?

I know absolutely nothing about him, but what I do know is that for being the Dean of Engineering, "Alec Gallimore" is a phenomenal name. I'd be extremely disappointed if the Dean of Engineering didn't have a name like Alec Gallimore. That's fiction-level name greatness right there; I can just see some fictional universe where we travel to other galaxies in a 'Gallimore Ship'.
He passes the name test, and I expect great things out of him based solely on that. I have no doubt of it, in fact.

Only had him for one class, but thought he was a very engaging professor. Honestly, the most memorable thing to me was that his email was "rasta" at umich.edu.

He lost some weight in the last 18 years.
Had him for Engin 100 with an Aerospace background. He was our technical advisor who ripped us apart on our project, which was a large portion of the grade.
He thought we made up a large portion of our research, and really it was a joke freshman level. Luckily, group member had the right articles and we were able to show where we got got the info in office hours.
Seemed reasonable, fair guy.

That's what I thoght when I saw his picture. He lost some weight! He also had a mustache, if I remember correctly...

I had him in undergrad, think it was Aero 535, which was propulsion. He was an engaging teacher, but my most pronounced memory of him was that he always talked about his car (some kind of Lexus I believe) and that he was REALLY into electric thrusters (in fact I believe he headed up a research lab in AA that was internationally renowned for their work in electric/plasma thrusters).

He was just an Associate Professor when I was getting my Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering (2000 - 2002). I never took any classes with him but I interacted with him from time to time. He always seemed like a nice guy and he was obviously very sharp. My guess is that he will make a very good Dean.

One of the best from the Aero Dept. He had a lab down in the Naval Arch building I believe where he was working on Plasma drives. Wish him all the best.

From first-hand knowledge, I can say that he is a fan of UM football, and has a picture of himself with Lloyd Carr in his office.

Alec served as my undergrad advisor, and I had several classes with him. Absolutely crushed me with his exams, but also showed a huge amount of care when I struggled with the course material. I credit him for single-handedly encouraging me to remain in the Aero program.
When I returned to school for my MBA, I worked with him to commercialize one of his (admittedly rad) technologies. He became as much of a friend as a mentor, and I'm absolutely thrilled to hear of this.

Wow I had Alec for my Engin 100 and I'm very happy to hear this. I recall him correcting another freshman who referred to him "Mr. Gallimore" and also called himselft an engineer. "It's Dr. Gallimore and engineers have an engineering degree."

I've had the opportunity to interact with Alec quite a bit the past several years. He is a first class individual, extremely bright, engaging, and a great listener. No question he is going to be a wonderful Dean for Michigan Engineering.

He taught me one class, as well, during my aero days. I enjoyed him and thought he was a good professor. But what I remember the most is a time I went to office hours for a quick question and we ended up talking guitar for about an hour. He plays a sweet Gibson SG, if I recall correctly.
