Todd McShay is Getting Heat for Attending SOTS...

Submitted by FauxMo on

So, there is apparently heat on ESPN's Todd McShay for attending SOTS last week, with some questioning his ability to remain unbiased and "objective" afterwards:

After thinking about it, I tend to agree; by attending this event McShay has really called into question the rock-solid journalistic integrity of ESPN. It's almost as bad as if, say hypothetically, ESPN owned a network that featured just one of the major college football conferences and thereby could be accused of hyping said conference whenever it had a chance! But thank God ESPN is all over this breach of ethics so we can go back to trusting them again...

(P.S. Anyone who doesn't instantly note the sarcasm here should punch themselves in the face...)

1. The article says McShay "regretted" his decision.  Nowhere in his quote does he say this.  Next time, he'll notify his overlords to get the O.K.

2. Even Jankens, the author of the story, is a Spartan fan and a webmaster of the cbslocal website.  So let's just say he was reaching a bit with his "regretted" line.

And I'm sure McShay's bosses knew what was going on before he boarded a flight for Ann Arbor.  It was known days before the event that he was scheduled.  Since his appearance we free, I'm sure he could've easily backed out and a replacement be found.

I think that ESPN's issue is that an on-air talent did not ask for permission to appear at an event that was being... and here's the key... An event that was being broadcasted on a platform that ESPN doesn't own.

If he asks for permission, which he says he did not do, then it's not an issue because ESPN would have cleared it.

Working in TV, albeit on a much smaller scale, I know my employer would NOT be happy if I did work for what is essentially a competitor. Remember ESPN was running recruiting programming. It doesn't matter if he wasn't scheduled to be a part of the coverage, I'm guessing he is contractually obligated to get permission to appear at anything broadcasted by a non ESPN platform.
