Bad Luck Charm For Michigan Sporting Events?

Submitted by UNCWolverine on

It’s recently occurred to me that while I thoroughly enjoy attending Michigan sporting events both at home and on the road I am apparently very bad luck. Here is my proof.

In 2015 I attended the following Michigan sporting events, and as you can see the outcomes were not very great.

Women’s Softball. I went to their first two games in Fullerton, CA last March where I saw them lose to ASU and UF. The rest of the season they went 60-6.

Football. I went to both the Utah and OSU losses. Rest of the season, 10-1.

Basketball. I made it back for the Xavier loss a few months ago. So prior to the IU game this week our home record was 11-0 in games I did not attend.

So my record at these events in 2015 was 0-5 while the combined record when I didn’t attend was 81-7 (again, pre-IU game). That seems to be statistically significant without breaking out my old stats/engineering textbooks.

I decided to take this a step further and look at my road football success or lack thereof. You can see that I started off pretty good, but then things got pretty ugly, save for beating two terrible Purdue/NW teams.

1997 IU Win

1997/8 Rose Bowl Win

1998  NW Win

1999 Wisky Win

2000 UCLA Loss

2000 Purdue Loss

2000 NW Loss

2001 Washington Loss

2004 ND Loss

2006/7 Rose Bowl Loss

2009 Iowa Loss

2012 Alabama Loss

2012 Purdue Win

2012 ND Loss

2013 NW Win

2014 ND Loss

2015 Utah Loss

Anyone else also seem to bring terrible luck to our teams, or maybe the opposite?

I must admit that I did go to both of our basketball games in Atlanta in 2013 so I split that weekend.

That said, I am not in Ann Arbor for the game today so I like our chances!!

Team 1097 is gonna be in the Final Four? Interesting.

So the Costanza "opposite" rule applies. If you go to any more home games, buy tickets from the visitors' outlets and dress in their colors. You must root for the opposing team. I know it'll be hard. Sometimes one has to sacrifice for the greater good.

I've actually yet to go to a Michigan event and see them lose. Probably been to 20-25 events. Now that being said sometimes I have to work during Michigan basketball games because of high demands at my job but anytime I have to miss some of the game they seem to kick ass when I'm not watching and then totally drop the ball when I tune in later. It's very strange. Sometimes they win those games but almost blow it.

Stick a tee on your left ear, move all the stuff in your right pocket to left pocket. Wear the cap upside down. Wear your underwear on top of your pants. Now go to the games. You are welcome.

My mGoBlog Brian photo bomb shirt I got for buying HAIL a couple of years ago. It's like 0-3 so it's not ever being worn again for a game.

And me betting. Last year I bet on Michigan three times. Utah + 3, MSU -3 and of course, Ohio State +2. I accept responsibility for the three losses.

Before I started high school the team was state runner up. We didn't have a winning season the whole time I was there. My first Michigan game was app state. And I was a student through almost the entire rich rod hoke ordeal. So I am most definitely cursed. At least my direct attendance at football games doesn't seem to have a negative impact. And every basketball game and hockey game I have ever been to has been a great and exciting game with a Michigan win.

I personally am a bad luck charm for the basketball team. My record at Crisler is 1-6. 1-7 if you include watching the national title game against Louisville at Crisler on the big screen. Because of this futile record, I have banned myself from Crisler for the next several years at the least.

My all time record at the Big House is 27-3 so I should be safe there...thank GOD.

I was just thinking something the other day. My buddy came over to my place three times last Fall to watch the game. Utah, Sparty and OSU. He's not coming over next season.

I haven't been to very many games the past few years, but I was at The Horror©, The loss to Toledo, the '06 rose bowl, v. OSU in something like '09, that one game against Wisconsin where they ran the same damn run play 21 times straight, I had tickets to the Maryland game 2 years ago and didn't end up going... I'm pretty horrible luck too.

I am currently 3-1 for UM games I have attended:

2006 @ ND W
2008 @ ND L
2014 vs PSU W
2015 vs NW W

On another note, I have attended 2 Iowa football games(my best friend is a huge Hawkeye fan), both in the state of Indiana, which Iowa has managed to lose in spectacular fashion.

2006 Iowa @ IU; IU wins 31-28
2015 B1G Championship Game Iowa vs MSU; MSU wins

I am planning on attending the UM game in Iowa City this coming season. Here's hoping Iowa's losing streak with my attendance continues...
