National Signing Day - Told You So.

Submitted by Raback Omaba on

As a young professional in my mid twenties who spends too much time on this site, worrying about Michigan Football, and spent way too much time worrying about recruiting....I can say one thing. I sure am glad this thing is over with. I can be a little bit more productive at work now.

As for the Dorsey to Michigan statement I made yesterday, this was not a bold "50/50" prediction. I can't name my sources, but I had credible information that Dorsey told a certain someone last night that he was headed to Ann Arbor. Won't say who this certain someone is, but let's just say that he's a better recruiter than Toney Clemons and could probably beat Toney in a foot race as well. Put it this way - I wasn't fazed by the fact that Dorsey supposedly also told USC and FSU that he was going there as well. Mad props to my source who told me this piece of information. It made me feel really, really good. Welcome to Ann Arbor Demar.

As for signing day in general - I am very happy with this year's haul and what transpired today. We didn't lose anybody that was verbally committed (Ash, MRob), which was huge.

The only "losses", in the loosest use of the term, were Parker and Knight. Those losses were completely mitigated by the Dorsey commitment. Although I would have loved to have two of them, we're forgetting that we have a pretty strong stable of secondary help already in Ann Arbor and on the way.

Also, I was happy with some of the commitments to other schools. There were no real big commits that could hurt us, such as Seantrel to OSU. I was hoping that Gholston would go to Alabama, but that was seriously wishful thinking last week when I found out that Gholston got a big Spartan tattoo on his arm (hey, he could be a huge movie buff and fan of 300)

I did, however, find it odd that the Michigan Regents couldn't wait 24 hours (or even 12!) to have an "emergency" meeting about the NCAA investigation.....the timing seemed a little fishy to me. I'm not a huge conspiracy theorist either, but it's just too coincidental. But I'll leave that for another day.

Anyway, all in all, a good day.

I'm feeling pretty good about this recruiting class. Lots of speed, decent size, solid defensive help, great long-term upside, etc... Dorsey was icing on the cake.

I'm thinking 8 wins this year are well within the realm of possibility.

Brian might offer you a job for MGoBlog. TomVH might have a worthy adversary. We are trying to compete at every position, right?

I'm going to -1 you Magnus for being so dismissive of everyone the last few weeks who dared to ask if Dorsey might actually be interested in UM while you lurked the MGoBoard. You might be one of the most knowledgeable regular posters on this board but that doesn't exempt you from being called out when you are wrong.

I don't think I was ever dismissive of anyone who thought Dorsey would come here. I just said he wasn't coming, and obviously I was wrong. You win some, you lose some.

But that's fine. I'm not the only person who was wrong about that.

Hey, I'd rather have Dorsey in the fold than have been correct and say, "Ha ha, I was right about that good player who didn't come here!" I'm excited to have him play for Michigan.

Yeah, I already gave you your +1 in the thread from last night (Threads from Last Night. Sounds like a website idea). This is overkill.

Already gave you a +1. This post only served to zero it out. Having some insider information doesn't mean you are suddenly an expert, guru, or Mgoscholar. Some modesty please.

I also find the timing of the Regents meeting baffling. Hard to figure what could have been going on there. I was hoping they would emerge with a statement of "no findings" but apparently not. Are they oblivious as to timing or something more sinister?

I'm just fucking around guys, I really don't give a shit if I get "negbanged" or "posbanged". I'm just pretty happy that we got Demar Dorsey.

Humility or modesty doesn't mean anything on an internet message board. It's not like I walk around telling all my friends that I just got an MGoPoint from making some sweet prediction or statement on MGoBlog.

I just love this board for two reasons:

1) Michigan discussions
2)Seeing people's reactions to everything

The reactions are priceless

Great class overall. Go Blue

For the record, I've never met Denard Robinson. Don't know him.

if i could but all i can spare is +1 until payday. if your "inside info" continues to gets results like this, i'll probably start to believe anything you ever say, even if you told me i was elvis presley, i'd believe you

Last summer I neg-raped for asking Raback for a link to some inside information he had about fall practice. Apparently Raback had already proved his meddle and I should have known not to ask his source (because Raback doesn't reveal his sources). So yesterday when he reveal that Dorsey was coming I toke it at face value. I was surprised how skeptical everyone was of this guy. So my question is: If everyone was so sure of his sources last summer to the point that they would negbang anyone that questioned him why were you guys almost universally skeptical this time? Even thoses that weren't (e.g., jg212) couldn't remember what he had said to be reliable.

If you, like Raback (and myself) spend way too much time here, you start to pick some things up. I figured out Raback's sources myself, but it does no good to to Raback (or the board) to expose them (or him,) because then the source dries up. I can tell you that Raback has an inside source currently involved with the team, and the source is close to sev. others on the team. Honestly, I've forgotten the names of those involved, which is better for me, for Raback, and for the Board. Brian himself knows quite a few people and sources. But a confidential source usually has a reason for being confidential. There is propriety in how and when information is released.

I'm sure some of Sam Webb's "gut feelings" come from sources who don't want to be quoted. I would expect that Brian and Tom VH have sources who are trustworthy, but who don't want to be quoted.

Of course, the problem is that until something is public knowledge, and can't be changed, it isn't a sure thing. An example of this was the commitment of Parker today to Washington. It sure looks like he changed his mind. And that's something you're allowed to do.

To sum up: on occasion, if Raback "predicts" something with certainty, it is likely to be true.

Eventually, sure. But I imagine that Turner will start at CB and the other CB job will be between Dorsey and Christian. The guy who loses that battle will probably sit on the bench. Once Woolfolk graduates, then we might see some movement. But I'm sure the coaches stressed to Parker that they wanted Dorsey to play cornerback, so it shouldn't have affected him in a negative way.

I would bet a decent chunk of money that Greg Robinson will not entrust both safety spots to players who have never played defense in college before.

Cornerbacks can get by on athleticism and speed.

Safeties require intelligence and experience more than athleticism; that's why Brandent Englemon was a pretty good safety despite being a subpar athlete.

Come on Magnus, people have to make sense of why Parker didn't come to UM using their UM-tinted glasses. Parker wanted to come here, he just didn't for reasons that are only favorable to us - not negative, not even neutral. It couldn't have been that Parker just liked the coaches, atmosphere, city, coast, chicks, of UW better.

So, let me get this straight. Troy Woolfolk and other players who have shown very poorly in the past are our options at deep safety. Dorsey runs sub-4.4 and is ESPN's #2 safety and #12 overall. RichRod says in presser he's going to start out at...corner?!? UM Coaches, please advise.
