OT: Friday drinking/what are you up to this weekend thread (drinking optional)
Not optional for me, as I am a Hopslam and an Edmund Fitzgerald invested already. Snow removal and roof-detail for me tomorrow, as I live in perpetual snowland of 1/4 mile off Lake Michigan. Narrowly dodged a nasty ice dam situation the last 2 winters, and hellbent on preventing one, 3rd year in a row.
No M Hockey this weekend, which is a bummer. So, tomorrow is roof, M Hoops and some dog training. Sunday, the boy and I are floating a West Michigan river armed with spey rods and desire to beat a steelhead or two. If you've never drifted a snowy river, I highly recommend it.
Tonight, 5 fingers of Elijah Crag 12 y/o and Red Wings by the fire. No work shit, no Swenson, no worries.

Are you getting married, too?
January 22nd, 2016 at 9:57 PM ^
not that old yet haha..Just some business to attend to at Glick fieldhouse
January 22nd, 2016 at 10:57 PM ^
for the Michigan Football Team tomorrow morning at Glick?
If so, I'm so envious of you---best of luck!
Not that I ever had nearly the ability and athleticism to play sports at that level, but I did something similar when I was in my early 20s, spending a day at a Detroit Tigers tryout in Kalamazoo. I made the first cut that day, but washed out quickly once I got a bat in my hand and proved incapable of hitting, especially breaking balls. Just doing the tryouts, though, was such a thrill!

Jeez you've been with this blog since you were what, 13?
Please make a diary of how the day goes. And go get it.

Book of Mormon. Haven't laughed this hard, consistently for an hour in a long time.
See it.
Hope their next play has Sarah Palin, Trump and Hillary.

Working this weekend. Sucks but gotta pay the bills. In my dreams I'll be drinking Popov vodka on the rocks.

classy, keep it
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:14 PM ^
Wait, what?
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:38 PM ^
Popov Vodka? Gads. I just checked BevMo and a 1.75 liter bottle is $13.99. We need to get a gofundme going to provide something better to drink!
By the way I live 15 miles from Lake Michigan and we get hammered with snow quite often as well.
January 22nd, 2016 at 8:52 PM ^
You're wasting your money man. You can get a perfectly good fifth of 5 O'clock for like $5
January 23rd, 2016 at 2:40 AM ^
mmmmmmmm. 5 o'clock. brain damage aside, a very smooth spirit. ...

LaGunitas Undercover Shut Down
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:14 PM ^
how is that? I almost bought some a week ago, but switched gears to something more familiar.
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:16 PM ^
Very good, but it's hoppy, so as long as that's your thing, try it!
4/5
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:54 PM ^
It's really not hoppy for a dipa. I've always been a fan of that beer.
For me? The beer haul today was two sixes of Hopslam, double crooked tree, and some Old Curmudgeon
January 22nd, 2016 at 10:55 PM ^
it will be another couple weeks probably before we get Hopslam out here

Dinosaur BBQ tonight for some food and my buddies band. Then lots of pond hockey and labatt Blues Saturday and Sunday. I'm with you on the bummer of not have Michigan hockey playing so I'll have to rock my jersey when I play.
January 23rd, 2016 at 6:52 AM ^
Same here! Only difference is our hockey is played on my backyard rink.
January 23rd, 2016 at 9:25 AM ^
That's what I played every winter weekend when I was a kid until my late teens when I left for college.
We'd cut a hole in the ice on the corner of a nearby farmer's pond after school on Thursday, form a bucket brigade to flood the surface, then have good enough ice Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Great times---and a helluva lot more fun than the video games kids play these days!
(Let the "off my lawn" comments begin...)

Located outside Baltimore....for the next 36 hours I'll be enjoying numerous beverages and shoveling 24-36 inches of the snow. Not complaining as it could be much worse....now if we lose power....NOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Get yourself some Sweet Baby Jesus. The weather doesn't seem so bad after a couple of those.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:45 PM ^
Very familiar with SBJ....just finished a Mad Elf and finished first shoveling. 6-8 inches already....light and fluffy. Kids will be disappointed in the AM if they can't make snowman.

In Northern Virginia. My schedule is looking WIIIIIIIIIIDDDEEEEE open for the next several days. Other than shoveling.

No doubt. I wait for it every year. Was blown away by the 30th Anniversary Stout. Very good but 11%. Got to be careful.

Had my first HopSlam of the year tonight as well. Finishing with some All Day IPAs because the HopSlam ain't cheap!

Always envious of of those who can spend an evening there. So many memories. I worked on State Street as a student, and I proposed a toast there to the entire bar to the National Champions in the early hours of 1998. It is a favorite whenever I come back to town.

Anyone want to recommend a high quality gin that won't break the bank?
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:24 PM ^
Solid. Great for martinis.
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:29 PM ^
Though Tanqueray is my personal favorite with tonic on the rocks
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:34 PM ^
Because I'm a snob.
/on the rocks with 1/2 of a lime at the bottom of the glass
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:47 PM ^
1/2 a lime??? That's crazy! Most people do a 1/4 lime and call it a day

It's a big glass.
January 22nd, 2016 at 8:47 PM ^
Beefeater doesn't have that strong juniper taste. Excellent for g&ts. When it's warm out, make a gin & tonic with a lime slice, mix it with an equal amount of lemonade (yellow or pink), add a splash of cranberry juice, you'll have yourself a good drink.
January 22nd, 2016 at 8:41 PM ^
Ransom Old Tom Gin... great change from the standard juniper berry fare. Drinks more like a whiskey.
As for me, a few fingers of Laphroaig 18
January 22nd, 2016 at 10:25 PM ^
I'll put in a plug for Bombay Sapphire. Not sure if that "breaks the bank"--it's all relative I suppose. But it's less than Hendricks and I think not much more than Tanqueray (both of which were also recommended).
January 23rd, 2016 at 12:41 AM ^
I'm a little late to the party, but I recommend Leopolds Gin. Its an exceptionally delicious small batch gin and the company was started by a Michigan grad.

Seriously good. I used to really enjoy their distillery-pub on south Main Street. I guess at some point they moved to Colorado and since then their gins and vodkas have been widely available on the west coast. Try the navy-strength gin for its extra 34 proof

A few Blue Moon pints after work with Fireball chasing it down. Beautiful day out here in Phoenix suburbs with mid-70s and these temps will carry into the weekend. Sorry my East coast MGOBloggers.
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:20 PM ^
Just seeing storm posts. Let me just say, I feel for East Coasters. I would not want to deal with 2 feet of snow with blowing and drifting. F that. Beautiful night in Ann Arbor.

The nice thing about dealing with a huge storm in DC/Maryland/VA area is that everything completely shuts down... so as long as you are prepared a few days out, its like a vacation. My job, and many many others, are either completely shut down, or at least have no expectation of work attendance. For me, this will last at least a few days after the last flake falls. In fact, during our biggest storm last year (which this storm dwarves) my county sent out emergency messages saying that anyone on any road for any reason would be stopped and arrested. It's a mandatory stay-cation.
A power outage would suck though.
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:33 PM ^
Very true. At work today I watched email after email pour in about our East Coast offices closing early and whatnot. That is the nice part. I wanted to go home early today.
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:49 PM ^
I'm still trying to figure out why a snow storm on the east coast gets a fancy name and getting buried under feet of snow and having high winds is just called a snow storm out west...
January 22nd, 2016 at 7:54 PM ^
Because 80 million people aren't impacted when a foot of snow hits out west.
January 22nd, 2016 at 8:07 PM ^
And we out here in in the mid-Atlantic never get this much. Could be the most all time for DC.
They keep say "life threatening, life threatening" and I'm all like "I ain't seen nobody die yet."
January 22nd, 2016 at 8:46 PM ^
good point... just would have been nice to have a name to curse as I was without power for 10 days
