Congrats to Heiko
Just heard that Heiko - the MD/PhD U-M student who wrote for MGoBlog during his PhD years - matched for urology at UC San Francisco. For those not familiar with the medical sciences, urology is exceptionally competitive and UCSF is elite (top 3 nationally).
Go Blue (and bubble screens)!
Addendum: Spelling error fixed
----
Mod-Heiko: Hey everyone, thanks so much for your kindness and support! I'm excited that I matched and have a new phase in life to look forward to. I'm so happy to have been a part of the MGoCommunity. It's one of the coolest things I've ever been a part of, and I'm going to miss it for sure. Anyway, I'll try to stay active on the blog as much as possible, and maybe when I'm done with training I'll get to come back to Ann Arbor!
Go blue!

Never again.

really too difficult to say? I know it's a five syllable word and all, but this is a Michigan blog.
Also, I thought the OP was referring to the restaurant and just left off the i.

This probably doesn't merit lengthy discussion, but since it's Friday. I think "gratz" lends less formality than the full "congratulations." The internet is causing some serious evolution of language. The generation growing up now is the first whose primary form of communication is written word and that comes with some new things that people don't want on their lawns.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:57 AM ^
How do you suppose people communicated before 1876 and the invention of the telephone, by shouting long distance?
January 22nd, 2016 at 12:02 PM ^
I'm not strictly talking about long-distance communication. Before 1876, I think people probably talked more than they wrote. Present day, I'm not so sure that is true.
January 22nd, 2016 at 2:28 PM ^
I think what you're trying to get at is that nobody before 1997 or so ever "wrote" (a term I use loosely) to someone in a real-time conversation. People used to write all the time. All. The. Time. But that was actual writing that they'd sit down to work on. It's only in the last 20 years or so that people "write" to someone they could talk to but choose not to. "Real time" writing - i.e., texting and IMing - got people trying to figure out how to save time.
January 22nd, 2016 at 4:30 PM ^
Partly this, you are correct. Partly I was being slightly hyperbolic in saying that young people now "write" more than they actually speak; as in they text/twitter/etc. more often than they verbalize.

Must be one of those guys so busy they abbreviate "July"..."Jul."
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:52 AM ^
Maybe that is how they do it in Sydney, but why the question mark?
January 23rd, 2016 at 10:15 AM ^
I was just trying to give a shout-out to Heiko, and didn’t mean to create controversy or a distraction. I'm actually an old dude who abbreviates a lot because I'm a real slow typist but has to a lot of it in today’s world. Baby boomer boys didn’t learn to type.

Not my first spelling error. :) Even today.

Congrats! Heiko/Borges was great entertainment!

Here's a pretty good article about him returning to Auburn as an opponent:
Highlights:
He has lost over 75 pounds
SJSU was respectable in a 35-21 loss at Auburn

The real reason he chose UCSF is to be closer to his BFF in San Jose though.

I reward you all the points, sir

He's close enough to bother Borges about those bubble screens again!
Edit: I was beaten to the punch....

My dad used to work in medical sales in the 70s and 80s. He once knew a urologist named Dr. Richard Tapper. That is a 100% true story...
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:26 AM ^
Too bad that Dick Trickle ended up in NASCAR... he would have been a natural in urology.

Holy shit, do you really know/know of him? I'd need to ask my dad, but I am sure his territory included Toledo...
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:31 AM ^
is/was a Urologist in Toledo, OH off Executive Pkwy.
I know this b/c he performed my Vasectomy in 2003!
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:35 AM ^
Oh my God, he is real. My dad told that joke at least 1000 times during my life, and I never checked to see if it was true. HAHAHAHAHA...
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:47 AM ^
Best name ever. And of course, he was based in Toledo.
January 22nd, 2016 at 11:55 AM ^
TMI dude. Should have saved that snip of info for the "OT - Should I get a vasectomy?" thread.
January 22nd, 2016 at 12:09 PM ^
"snip of info"
I see what you did there.
January 22nd, 2016 at 12:37 PM ^
Yes I have a vas deferens to people who know more about this topic than I do.

You could have this doctor's last name, although I assume he does empathize with some of his patients....

True story, the oral surgeon who took out my wisdom teeth is named Dr. Small - nothing big about his name, but in his practice was another oral surgeon by the name of, I shit you not, Dr. Fear:

Dr. Stiff.

I won't make jokes either, but considering what Heiko will be doing for a living and what he will be touching, is it appropriate if one runs into Heiko to ask him if he's washed his hands recently?
Congrats Heiko!!
