ND gets two OH QBs today - both with Cinci offers

They get verbals from a 2-star and 3-star today. The three-star decommited from the Bearcats

He just needs time to avoid all those five stars Weis targeted and get "his guys".
January 31st, 2010 at 3:38 PM ^
given the fact the UM fan-base's rallying cry has been that we need RR to get "his guys" in? Kelly missed out on 5*s because they had other high power offers at programs that seem more stable than ND right now.
January 31st, 2010 at 3:14 PM ^
That's 3 QB commits in one class.
A little odd, no?
January 31st, 2010 at 3:22 PM ^
Well the heir apparent to Clausen has an injury that might limit him in Spring Practice and possibly linger into next season and ND has no depth behind him. So BK is basically looking to load up at QB. Since he can't get a 4* or 5*, I guess he figured he should grab a few guys and hope one pans out.
BK couldn't even manage to score Joe Montana's son. The kid is supposedly only a 3*, but still he would have been welcome addition to the team.

How the hell does Nick Montana not going to ND fall on Kelly's shoulders? The kid was never strongly considering ND and committed to Washington months ago.
And Montana isn't some average kid that Kelly would have been taking a flyer on because he's a legacy. Montana was Ohio State's #1 target at QB this year.

Well Montana committed to Washington in June, Kelly was hired in December so he probably never even talked to him.
January 31st, 2010 at 3:42 PM ^
It is 4 QB commits.
Given the extreme lack of depth they have, not totally out of order since they're probably thinking they can move some of these guys around.
The Massa kid went to my hs (Cincinnati St. Xavier), and I think he's a project, but he could turn into a high quality QB given a couple of years.

If all goes well ND will end up with 5 "QBs" in this class. Not all of them will be QBs though.
Originally Kelly planned to only take Rees (1) and Hendrix (2) as the 2 QBs for this class, but Massa (3) reached out to Kelly through his coach saying he still very much wanted to play for him. A few weeks later Kelly offered him as a QB. The newly added 4th commitment Roback (4) is listed as a QB but won't end up at that position. He will likely be a LB or HB depending on how the recruiting class ends up. Spond (5) will hopefully round out the class, he would likely end up a DB

Kelly gets tremendous production out of his quarterbacks, but good lord are they ever going to miss Clausen this year.

More informative thread title please.
Edit: Wow. Apparently there are three things you don't joke about on MGoBlog: politics, race, and thread titles.

Those are two scholarships that can't be used on anyone else for four years.
Well done, BK.
January 31st, 2010 at 3:22 PM ^
I start to think to myself, "Am I really this coach's preferred choice at QB?"
Although this particular headline is misleading as it appears Roback is not being recruited as a QB.

The same could be said of low rated prospects of most teams that have positional need, including Michigan. Brian Kelly is doing what he needs to do in adding players to a position of need from a small pool of still-available prospects.

Rocks and glass houses do not mix.
January 31st, 2010 at 3:32 PM ^
what mstier said.
when we get lower rated guys its because RichRod knows how to find sleepers but when Kelly does it its "lolz at ND. Kelly cant recruit"?
January 31st, 2010 at 3:33 PM ^
It's because BK's recruits lack GRIT.
/s. I agree with both of you.

I'm patiently waiting for Irish to come here and finish his vague-off with Obes.

ND's situation is a lot like UM in 2008. Justin Feagin was a late two star signing and look how he turned out. Kelly is off to a late start and his QB's are going to be a crapshoot. I hope ND turns out exactly like UM did in RR's first year.
That involves no glass house.

Being a Cincinnati fan second to a Michigan fan, Brian Kelly's schemes can make any quarterback look good. Ben Mauk (a transfer from Wake Forest), Dustin Grutza(unspectacular in 3 years of playing), Tony Pike (5th string at beginning of junior year), and now Zach Collaros, an unheralded, undersized recruit. Don't count any of these guys out to put up outstanding numbers in a few years.
January 31st, 2010 at 6:42 PM ^
Pike and LeFevour (also a Kelly recruit) both looked pretty good in the senior bowl. I don't have a lot of worry about our QBs
January 31st, 2010 at 8:17 PM ^
It's not your QB's you need to worry about. It's that God awful defense which can't manage to give up less than 30 points a game.
January 31st, 2010 at 6:15 PM ^
the player to be named later from the Demetrius Jones transaction?
January 31st, 2010 at 7:29 PM ^
ND burning scholarships on QBs instead of focusing on the defensive side of the ball. Who cares if Kelly's offense can be good -- will it really be that much better than what Weis had this year, which was not bad? Not likely. In fact, I would rather have Weis's pro style offense instead of Kelly's offense given that we saw what a good defense could do to Kelly's system this year. Meanwhile, Weis's offense this year (and way back when under Quinn) was not as likely to get shut down by a good defense.

Only a fist-pump off will tell us who is the true guido.

OH man the news gets worse!!!! =)
ND just got their 5th QB, Oh the world is ending whhaaaaaa*
Wait there is no way this can be true, Spond is 4 stars, Kelly doesn't like 4 star recruits
*see my post above for an explanation of the sarcasm here
