OT - East Coast Wolverines Prepare for Snow Emergency
Mates,
At the risk of having my points wiped out by the lord of the board, here is a heads-up to you east coast wolverines for a pretty major snowstorm:
http://www.wunderground.com/news/winter-storms-jonas-new-things-to-know
Up to 2' of snow in some areas. Jealous. Love snow storms.
Anyway, get your houses ready, gather the wife/hubby/kids, water, candles, generators, and snow shovels, and enjoy the snow from a safe place. What is no big deal for those of us who live in the boonies can be pretty disastorous for you city-dwellers.

I heard it was a Deathstorm

It's gonna snow!

I refuse to take anything called Jonas seriously.

Jereb-NO you diiiin't.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:53 PM ^
I don't understand why not....

What about the bonus Jonas?
January 20th, 2016 at 11:38 PM ^
Winter storms don't have names.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:48 PM ^
they started naming them in 2012
January 20th, 2016 at 11:52 PM ^
They being The Weather Channel and nobody else.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:58 PM ^
Correct. TWC is in their death throes trying to be relevant.

Don't worry, people. DC is crowdsourcing a better name as we speak. Also panicking.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:41 PM ^
everyone gotta load up on eggs, milk and bread. A lot of French Toast to be made.
Oh and pics (of the snow, not the French Toast) should be posted or it didn't happen.

Milk sandwiches are better!

Is a mile sandwhich a real thing? I grimace just thinking about what it could be.
January 21st, 2016 at 10:40 AM ^
With as much milk and bread people buy during impending snow storms, yes, they are (must) be a real thing!
January 20th, 2016 at 11:50 PM ^
I feel bad for D.C. since it looks like they'll be hit hard. Outside of like 3 storms in the past decade, NYC seems to get by pretty well when these deathpocalypse storms roll through in the winter. I hear about a foot; that should be manageable.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:54 PM ^
its already started. northern Virginia got the lightest dusting and there are accidents everywhere. I couldn't even make it from Fairfax back to Arlington (15 miles), it's a hotel for the night. god help us all this weekend.

I saw a tweet that had overhead shots of 395 thirty minutes ago and it was bumper-bumper from the 14th street bridge.
I turned on my Waze app to see how the Beltway was doing...the red! All the red! My eyes!

I agree. Waze is amazing. If anyone here hasn't tried it, I strongly recommend it!
January 21st, 2016 at 5:25 AM ^
I work for Fairfax Schools, and correctly guessed they'd delay opening after seeing the dusting last night. There was no effort to pretreat, which exacerbates things. But now the region will spend the rest of the year going overkill in advance of every possible storm.

I would have upvoted you, Mr. Melanin, but you're just going to lose all your points in about an hour. Cheers.

Good slate of games to get snowed in with. Hopefully I can fulfill my dad duties in the morning and watch some good hoops in the afternoon. Of course, if we lose power.... all bets are off

My father-in-law is originally from the northwestern reaches of the state of New York, somewhere in the vacant space between Buffalo, Medina, Brockport....that area. Close enough to Lake Ontario that he has some good snow stories.
I still remember him chuckling at my constant complaining about the "Polar Vortex" a couple winters ago and all the snow that we managed to get with that. He kept telling me this was simply "Tuesday" in some parts of upstate New York.

So odd to watch the east coast get hammered while we in the midwest sip our bourbon and look at the grass outside.
I must say I sort of like feeling sorry for people versus being the one brutalized by nature for a change. And yes I can say this having lived in Michigan for 50 years.
Oh and XtraMelanin I will give you your first UV when you're reset to 0 have no fear sir!

I hope everyone stays safe and warm. While I no longer have to worry about snow, I learned the hard way to be prepared in Hurricane Wilma in 2005. "It'll just be like a bad thunderstorm" they said. Not making that mistake again.

1. The snow on the east coast.
2. Xtramelanin's mgo points at hands of Brian.

The biggest problem here with these storms is the power. Pepco goes out when a butterfly in Brazil flaps its wings.
During Snowmaggedon in 2010 we had no power for 3 days and it was 6 degrees. No roads were plowed for days. I (along with my wife and 8 year-old son and 5 year-old daughter) had to shovel a quarter mile of snow just to get out of the neighborhood and get to a hotel with power.
I'd like to avoid that again.

And a generator too.
With all the taxes I pay in Montgomery County, I should not have to pay all over again to get these basic services. But that's a rant for some other day.
January 21st, 2016 at 9:49 AM ^
I lived in Nothern VA in 2010 and we only lost power for about 4 hours. Are you in MD?
January 21st, 2016 at 10:54 AM ^
I live in Hunt Valley, MD. It can snow all it want but please leave our power on.
Edit: now they are saying 30-40 mph winds where we live with gusts to 50. Gonna be a coooold weekend with no power.
The infrastructure in upper Baltimore County (which is massive) is made out of mud and sticks and the power goes out when a cat named Mittens sneezes in Denver.

suck it up you pansies, its snow, not death from the sky

In Seattle, the weather looks to go from 44 and drizzle to maybe 43 and drizzle until Memorial Day. Preparing for bears emerging from hibernation and fresh goo in the bat box. Considering turning on the furnace and scraping out fire pit for marshmallows. Setting sasquatch traps tonight and hoping for the best.
January 21st, 2016 at 5:33 AM ^
How do you guys handle all those crazy weather shifts? I'd be so torn between the green light rain jacket and the black waterproof windbreaker.
January 21st, 2016 at 5:03 AM ^
We already had a thread on this. Not sure what the big deal is anyways. You guys get 3" of snow and the whole state goes on lockdown. Enjoy the 3 days off.

Unless Virginia has gotten significantly better at their snow removal since I lived there (admittedly 10-15 years ago), you're looking at a week off or more. This is legimitimate 'raid your local walmart' weather

I was in Knoxville, TN last spring when they got a few inches of snow. There was no school for a week and a half, and when watching the news that night they showed that the news crew had sleeping bags at the station because they feared that they wouldn't be able to make it home safe (or alive). I couldn't believe it..
January 21st, 2016 at 7:26 AM ^
It's crazy. I live in Louisville Ky so they're not nearly as bad but the schools here will cancel if snow arrives during transportation time.
They also don't plow here even though they have blades. They don't want to waste the salt by plowing and resalting like they do up north.
January 21st, 2016 at 11:15 AM ^
They don't use salt in the UP. Too cold for that. Cars and trucks eventually will pack the snow down. Nice for taking a snowmobile to school

The UP has 311K people as of the last census.
The DC-Baltimore megaburb has 8.7 million.
This results in quite a bit more congestion.
