OT - East Coast Wolverines Prepare for Snow Emergency

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

At the risk of having my points wiped out by the lord of the board, here is a heads-up to you east coast wolverines for a pretty major snowstorm:

Up to 2' of snow in some areas.  Jealous.  Love snow storms.

Anyway, get your houses ready, gather the wife/hubby/kids, water, candles, generators, and snow shovels, and enjoy the snow from a safe place.  What is no big deal for those of us who live in the boonies can be pretty disastorous for you city-dwellers.

everyone gotta load up on eggs, milk and bread. A lot of French Toast to be made.

Oh and pics (of the snow, not the French Toast) should be posted or it didn't happen.

I feel bad for D.C. since it looks like they'll be hit hard.  Outside of like 3 storms in the past decade, NYC seems to get by pretty well when these deathpocalypse storms roll through in the winter.  I hear about a foot; that should be manageable.

its already started. northern Virginia got the lightest dusting and there are accidents everywhere. I couldn't even make it from Fairfax back to Arlington (15 miles), it's a hotel for the night. god help us all this weekend.

Good slate of games to get snowed in with.  Hopefully I can fulfill my dad duties in the morning and watch some good hoops in the afternoon.  Of course, if we lose power.... all bets are off

My father-in-law is originally from the northwestern reaches of the state of New York, somewhere in the vacant space between Buffalo, Medina, Brockport....that area. Close enough to Lake Ontario that he has some good snow stories.

I still remember him chuckling at my constant complaining about the "Polar Vortex" a couple winters ago and all the snow that we managed to get with that. He kept telling me this was simply "Tuesday" in some parts of upstate New York.

So odd to watch the east coast get hammered while we in the midwest sip our bourbon and look at the grass outside.

I must say I sort of like feeling sorry for people versus being the one brutalized by nature for a change.  And yes I can say this having lived in Michigan for 50 years.

Oh and XtraMelanin I will give you your first UV when you're reset to 0 have no fear sir!

I hope everyone stays safe and warm. While I no longer have to worry about snow, I learned the hard way to be prepared in Hurricane Wilma in 2005. "It'll just be like a bad thunderstorm" they said. Not making that mistake again.

The biggest problem here with these storms is the power.  Pepco goes out when a butterfly in Brazil flaps its wings.

During Snowmaggedon in 2010 we had no power for 3 days and it was 6 degrees.  No roads were plowed for days.  I (along with my wife and 8 year-old son and 5 year-old daughter) had to shovel a quarter mile of snow just to get out of the neighborhood and get to a hotel with power.

I'd like to avoid that again.

I live in Hunt Valley, MD. It can snow all it want but please leave our power on.

Edit: now they are saying 30-40 mph winds where we live with gusts to 50.  Gonna be a coooold weekend with no power.

The infrastructure in upper Baltimore County (which is massive)  is made out of mud and sticks and the power goes out when a cat named Mittens sneezes in Denver.

In Seattle, the weather looks to go from 44 and drizzle to maybe 43 and drizzle until Memorial Day. Preparing for bears emerging from hibernation and fresh goo in the bat box. Considering turning on the furnace and scraping out fire pit for marshmallows. Setting sasquatch traps tonight and hoping for the best.

I was in Knoxville, TN last spring when they got a few inches of snow. There was no school for a week and a half, and when watching the news that night they showed that the news crew had sleeping bags at the station because they feared that they wouldn't be able to make it home safe (or alive). I couldn't believe it..
