Rich Rod Impromptu Presser Comment Count

Tim

Coach Rodriguez briefly talked to the media at halftime of the basketball game against Iowa (Michigan leads 29-17 at the half). Relevant notes from coach:

  • Michigan is looking to sign 26-28 recruits in the class of 2010.
  • Rodriguez talked to a few coaches about Michigan's open linebackers coaching position at the coaches' meetings a couple weeks ago. They won't worry about hiring somebody until after Signing Day, but should have the new coach hired within a week of that date.
  • All the players who have had offseason surgery (Mike Martin, Vincent Smith, et al) are progressing on pace with their rehab. They'll still be out for spring, but should be ready to play in the fall.
  • As long as Kelvin Grady can manage his academics with playing basketball, Rodriguez has no problem with him re-joining John Beilein's squad. There shouldn't be too much interference between football spring practice and the basketball season, but if there is, the coaches will let him continue playing basketball.
  • In spring practice, the slots and running backs are overlapping duties a bit, because many of the guys who play slot are used to the running back position from their high school days.
  • The coaches are still trying to find guys who can help on defense. Cameron Gordon is one guy who is looking at a potential switch to the other side of the ball.

Rodriguez will have a formal press conference on Wednesday for the signing of the Class of 2010. More details on MGoBlog's Signing Day coverage coming later.

I knew it was 28.

If they go to 28, that probably means that Wright and Sheridan won't be back. I suppose Sheridan could come back since he was a walkon in the past he could pay his own way.

Given his alleged coaching aspirations, I think he hangs around the program as long as he's eligible. That may means he returns to walk-on status, but I doubt he leaves the team entirely.

And frankly, I wouldn't want him to. He's given us his all, and I hope we can keep him around as long as possible.

RR made it official.

Sam Webb on WTKA said this weeks ago. Whoever said it it is great news for Michigan. This particular class will be solid for this team for years to come. There are so many good athletes in it.

I am surprised by the comments in regards to the number of commits UM can take. Many seem to think that we can take more commits because a certain number of players won't be back. i.e., if three current schollies don't come back, we can give 28 schollies in this class.

This is incorrect. The most new schollies we can give in August is 25 (there are some minor technical variations to this, but they are pretty rare).

For example, if every single one of our current schollies decided not to return in August, and we were fielding a team with ZERO players, we would STILL only be able to give 25 schollies in August.

Hope this clears the air a bit.

he can only give out 25 scholarships. This could be a huge disaster, him thinking that he has 26 or 28 to give out. Think of the children!

nick saban gives out 84 new scholarships every year, so what is the problem?

My son would be very upset if he knew I was reading or even responding to a blog. But I feel I have to! So many wonderful kind people seem intrested in Dave's present condition. I am also surprised myself on the impact he has made at center. Dave is doing very well and is working out everyday. He is ahead of schedual with the rehab. He is now squating over 500#s and is running again. You cant stop someone who is driven as he is. He feels he disapointed the team, the coaches and the fans with his injury. If you knew Dave the way I know Dave ...........
He will be back come hell or high water!

When RR talked about slots playing some RB, did anyone else immediately think of Terrence Robinson? RR wants to get the ball in his hands, but if he's having problems catching the ball, just hand it off to him. He's electric with the ball in his hands, I'm glad we're figuring out how to get it there.

It's amazing that after all this time we still aren't sure how many people we can or cannot sign. It seems that recruiting sort of lends itself to violations sometimes (not saying in the case of Kiffin, etc).

if players transfer after spring season, and if kids really want to come back for a 5th year (especially if they rode the bench for the first 4).

Moreover, if the number is 28, and Michigan signs 26, it looks like RR fell short (even though he may want to bank 2 for next year).

In short, regardless of subject, it's better to have ranges on any public number.

is one of the biggest keys to next season. Not only will it be fun to watch a clean exchange again, but Molk really allows for some flexibility in the snap count. Our lack of execution in the 2nd half this past season might have something to do with the predictability of our snap. I remember MSU specifically saying how they had that pinned.

Sheer speculation on my part but last time he did a presser during halftime of a BB game I believe RR mentioned 26 exactly. I wonder if the 26-28 range means he has a couple silent commits in his back pocket that we will find out about 2/3/10. One can only hope he closes with his usual wizard hat and snake oil style.
