Roster Attrition after 2016
Seems like it will be abnormally high after this season.
Off the top, we lose these Senior starters???
All of our backfield, Lewis and Clark, Hill, Thomas. LBer Gedeon. Dline Wormley and Charlton.
Offense we lose both Wideouts, our TE, 3 Oline starters, our #1 RB.
So theres 14ish. That number doesn't include the possibility of losing Peppers, Hurst maybe M. Cole.
Seems like we really need B. Cole to get some serious snaps next year. Would be great to get OT Newsome some snaps. Would be great if Raulerson would come in and start and play again in 2017.
I don't want to panic when Joe Blow from Kokomo changes his crystal ball away from a Michigan recruit, so I've found something new to panic about. Even if is just a year and half away from happening. I kid.
My question one last time, isn't the attrition going to be about as bad as its ever been after 2016? Or too early to panic about?
January 19th, 2016 at 6:04 PM ^
I don't think there is any question that 2017 is going to be a rebuilding/reloading year for Michigan. Hopefully we'll see a number of younger players emerge in 2016 and have a lot of confidence for when those guys take over starting roles.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:06 PM ^
Yeah, but reloading should be easy after winning a championship in '16.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:52 PM ^
...because our coach is named Harbaugh and he has a hell of a coaching staff and he knows what the fuck he is doing at Michigan...and he understands that we will be losing players and will do what is necessary to be ready in 2017.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:49 PM ^
Brady Hoke brought in plenty of talent. Even in a "reloading" year, there are still going to be enough players to step up in 2017. Besides, there are going to be plenty of true freshmen, true sophomores and redshirt freshmen from Harbaugh's first two full recruiting classes and the third year players from the abbreviated 2015 class.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:07 PM ^
Wayy to early to worry bout this. With injuries and young players emerging too many factors to take into account. But if OSU can do it next season then why can't we?
January 19th, 2016 at 7:38 PM ^
Agreed. Waaaaay too early. Listing Mason Cole and Hurst as possible early entrants is just begging to be worried about something. Instead think about O'Korn/Morris, Isaac, Shallman, Hill, Poggi, Kugler, Dawson, Canteen and McCray all having the lights go on to join M Cole and Hurst as starting seniors for the defending NCs.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:07 PM ^
reload not rebuild. We will be find i guarantee it but we have to wait and see to know just how bad or good the situation is.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:08 PM ^
It's a real bummer we're going to have essentially a fresh starter at qb no matter what this year, with so much other experience and talent on the roster we are likely to lose. However, assuming 'crootin stays as strong as it looks this year and next, I think it's too early to really panic; despite all the losses, Harbs will then have 3 of his own classes to work with.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:08 PM ^
This class is going to be extremely important. Fortunately we will be returning a QB so we won't be sore there.
January 19th, 2016 at 7:39 PM ^
I thought Taysom Hill only had one year of eligibility left...
January 19th, 2016 at 6:09 PM ^
The return to winning ways, the allure of our coaches, will certainly help replenish the recruiting cupboards.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:11 PM ^
B. Cole's issues that put him in the doghouse this year have resurfaced. Don't put too much stock in him quite yet.

Honestly I'm not gonna link it. It's over at scout on the message boards from a connected guy, corroborated by Sam.

what were his issues?
January 19th, 2016 at 8:33 PM ^
I'd be curious too - but isn't it usually MJ or grades 90% of the time?
January 19th, 2016 at 11:44 PM ^
It's the former
January 19th, 2016 at 6:13 PM ^
Yeah......the defense is scary young after 2016.
- Glasgow- 5th Year
- Taco- Senior
- Wormley- 5th Year
- Gedeon- Senior
- Peppers- RS Soph likely to go pro
- Lewis- Senior
- Clark- 5th Year
- Dymonte- Senior (ugh)
- Delano- Senior
- Stribling- Senior
Someone on here made a diary about it awhile ago. Brace yourselves......youth is coming.
January 19th, 2016 at 8:32 PM ^
That was me..... almost a year ago. :D
I like to worry 2 years in advance.

a few issues with this. I don't think the loss on the oline will be that significant, a lot of younger players will be getting snaps this year so its not like newbies will be taking over and lastly we are replacing good to great players with more great players. maybe even better players in some spots.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:32 PM ^
Yeah we will see who steps up this year but there will probably be a lot of sophomore and a few freshmen starters in 2017 that will somewhat mitigate the poorer classes of '14 and '15. Most likely pretty young in 2017.
January 19th, 2016 at 6:35 PM ^
There will be lots of attrition. We've known this. The class in 2017 might be just as big as the class in 2016. The difference will be losing so many starters, especially on defense.
The coaches are extremely aware of this, and it is significant in how they're recruiting, both in 2016 and beyond. I expect there will be growing pains in the 2017 season.
One observation: this is essentially what OSU is going through right now. While it is hard to get there, we need to be in the place where we are red-shirting 4 star guys and reloading every couple years, instead of rebuilding. While we hate OSU and Alabama, that's the model, and we need to get there.
January 19th, 2016 at 10:08 PM ^
Aside from thinking of that school down south as a model, I totally agree with everything else.
It will be interesting to see what they do with the LB crew - new position coach, new DC, new direction and a new crew.
I'm maybe a little worried about CB's but mainly I think it's just hard for us to see what it will look like right now. I'm sure the coaches will surprise us with the product they put together.
This class is huge - in talent and depth and they are the guys that JH will want in there. I expect they will be the backbone of the future dynasty in the making.
I expect a strong run at a PO spot next year, and possibly a NC. I do expect a dropoff in '17, but I have faith that JH and his merry band see it much better than me and will handle it as well as it can be handled.
Go Blue!
January 19th, 2016 at 6:56 PM ^
The team will be extremely young but potentially extremely talented: O'Korn/Morris/Peters, Isaac/Walker, Drake/2016 WR's, Bunting, M. Cole, Mone, Gary, McCray/Furbush/Bush, and Peppers should be good enough and experienced enough to get the job done.
Plus we will get Ohio State and Michigan State at home.
January 20th, 2016 at 11:05 AM ^
You may be right, but depth will still be a huge issue.
January 19th, 2016 at 7:12 PM ^
Deal with this every year and seem to be fine With Harbaugh this issue shouldn't be a big one in years to come.
January 19th, 2016 at 7:13 PM ^
I know everyone is correct about 2017, but I just want to enjoy the prospect of a great 2016 season before I start to get too bothered about all the graduations.
January 19th, 2016 at 7:28 PM ^
Those three positions need the most seniority generally, and I expect a lot of players with more than 2 years left to compete for and win playing time next year. LB worries me a bit
January 19th, 2016 at 7:28 PM ^
Harbaugh and staff will have their younger players ready. There will be no youth excuses, though we may only win 9 games in 2017, instead of 11 games. I think the offense will be more explosive which will help out the younger defense.
January 19th, 2016 at 7:28 PM ^
"attrition as bad as its ever been" it depends on how old you are and how long you have been following michigan. if you are under 20, then yes it probably is. if your much older then no. this go`s on at every school every year. that is why great recruiting and development is the difference between a couple of good years or long term sucess.,
January 19th, 2016 at 7:30 PM ^
I've been thinking about this for some time with the entire secondary most likely leaving. If we land Long and Hill with some of the others on the roster I do think we have enough talent to be ok but any team that young is going to have some really really rough spots.
It will be interesting to see some of younger safties play next year. Hard to picture any of the younger corners playing when you consider there are really only three for two spots (Peppers at Nickel).
On the D-Line Hurst, Gary, Mone, Elliot and whoever plays at WDE should give us enough to deal with the departing Wromley, Glasgow, and Taco...
The advantage will be we can sell playing time. Lots of spots open all over which will be appealing. If we have Gary he would probably be the only person to have a locked up spot, The rest of the guys will fight it out all over the field.
On offense I'll only be concerned if the recieving production matches this year. I like our talent at WR with Ways, Harris, Perry and all the 2016 guys. However, if none of them catch more than 15-20 balls this year, yes I'll be concerned.
Not concerned at TE, AT ALL. Love Butt but we have numbers there.
Hey the OL is what it is...
January 19th, 2016 at 8:04 PM ^
i think defense is going to be a much bigger challenge. we had 2 lean recruiting years on defense, so let's hope that 2016 will be a big year for defensive recruits.
January 19th, 2016 at 8:36 PM ^
2017 Michigan will be 2016 OSU. A very young team.
2017 UM DBs will be 2016 UM LBs - massive attrition from 1 group with reliance on a bunch of unknowns. I am hoping Ty Kinnel wins a starting S job over Hill or Thomas and Cole has to get playing time because those are basically your starting S in 2017. Brandon Watson hopefully gets playing time this year @ CB and who knows what the hell Canteen is doing but if he is still on team it would be nice to show something next year so we have some corners who need to shave.
It can't be long now until the cries of a grad transfer corner/safety begin!
January 19th, 2016 at 8:41 PM ^
We land Hudson and Fuller we would a couple more options at S
January 19th, 2016 at 8:59 PM ^
Eh, I wouldn't sweat it. Odds are there will be injuries and some combination of Kinnel, Cole, Watson and Canteen will see the field this fall. If not, things are looking up for the 2016 defense.

I agree that we are going to see a lot of starters depart and that will be sad. But I don't like the word "attrition" in this context. That's a negative and doesn't honor the four or five year athletes who've given it all up and, hopefully, graduate.
Attrition is more about leaving because there's somewhere else to go and play at the college level, or just stop playing or drop out of school.
January 19th, 2016 at 8:39 PM ^
Attrition is fine - but would have been better titled as "Roster Attrition" as opposed to player which as you say usually is reserved for an early departure when it is specific to 1 player.
January 19th, 2016 at 8:44 PM ^
Agree.
January 19th, 2016 at 8:39 PM ^
Fans have been accustom to losing so the thought of young players scare them. Elite teams play young players and still compete. Remember 2015 was supposed to be the Buckeyes big year but they peaked a year early in 2014 without a bunch of 5th year seniors
January 20th, 2016 at 1:28 AM ^
Young guys will get to play a quarter a game of junk time. Just like the old days.
January 19th, 2016 at 8:48 PM ^
Can anyone point to a year that has more roster attrition than after next year? I'd like to look at that year and the following year for some reason. My google skills didn't yield much.
January 19th, 2016 at 8:51 PM ^
2008 had a coaching change but was pretty bad
