Not every offense committed by a juvenile is a juvenile offense. Also, the age between "juvenile" and "adult" can be different in different states. It's possible that either those weren't juvenile offenses (and Feagin's were) or he wasn't a juvenile when he committed it (and Feagin was). If that makes sense.

A lot of times these kinds of websites (like the OTIS system in Michigan, http://www.state.mi.us/mdoc/asp/otis2.html) can go several months without being updated.

Another option is that he was offered an alternative sentence like a youth court/young offenders program which may not always appear as official sentences.

That said I think we should all reserve judgment, particularly when the details of the case are unclear.

it would be nice for you to link where you got this from, namely the Florida message board who seemed to find this earlier today. as of now it comes off like you're trying to break it as mgoblog exclusive

ah i see. they probably got it from the Florida board and brought it to their board. I saw it on the buckeye board and GBW, but I guess it was taken down from Stadium and Main.

people regularly post on here that they believe Rivals/Scout/News snipe stories/developments written on this site. yet when someone does the exact same, it's not right to demonstrate the same courtesy expected?

hell even wikipedia requires sources.

this is NOT why UF dropped him. they did so because they told him not to take any more visits after his Michigan official and he did so anyway.

do you really think we're this far in the game with FSU, USC, and Michigan recruiting him with no one knowing about this? my guess is this whole thing isn't anywhere near as big a deal as some of you are trying to make it out to be.

Either that or it's something in this kid's past that he's resolved to correct and not let happen again. It happens and if it's truly in the past people should give up the petty holier-than-though attitude and support the kid so that he keeps it in the past.

not done their due diligence. Assuming all this is true - football is Demar's ticket to a new life. I wish him the best.

Given the recent poor decisions of Gilbert Arenas and even the not so recent history of James Whitley at Mich, schools need to address these issues if there are concerns.

If Demar commits to Mich I would very much like him and/or the coaching staff to address this in a public forum.

While I do agree that this is a big deal, I disagree that this needs to be addressed in a public forum. He was never found guilty of anything as far as we know. Addressing this would make it legitimate and also not let Demar get past it.

Secondly, the case is closed and he apparently did not see any jail time. If he was tried on this count and the judge in anyway thought he posed a risk to the general public he would have seen some prison time.

In my opinion, we need to trust the coaches instincts and research.

public figure. They are tried in the courts of public opinion. Would that Mark McGwire understood this better. RR has a history of hardship case recruitment. This is a story that would be good to hear for both sides. We don't need more than an acknowledgement of where he is coming from wrt his history.

This sort of story is the least I expect of every Michigan football player - it just so happens that the vast majority of the stories are pretty straight forward.

I'm all for letting Demar get past this. A simple statement would do that. I hold the Michigan coaching staff accountable for Demar's recruitment. They need to communicate to Demar what signing with Michigan means to his future.

I personally hope to see him in the Maize and Blue - if all is good here.

Even the Florida board admits they dropped him because of other visits. I don't really know why there is any question about that. You must trust the coaches...whatever info they can get on players, they do.

Conflicted because of Dorsey's athleticism, but very proud the high standards our University portrays. IMO, I think the signing of Parker AND Knight would offset Dorsey's stellar abilities on the field

this isnt an MIP, its a fairly serious offense. we all know if this happened anywhere else, especially msu, we would be chastising that program....

but then again, second chances etc. ill defer to the coaches, i suppose.

I am not going to lie and say Dorsey's past makes me happy. With that said; as of now I trust the coaching staff's judgment and I am not going to write off a kid before he even chooses us. I think the combination of family and Barwis will keep him out of trouble if he does come here.

I am curious as to whether this was not supposed to be public knowledge - this may not have been a permanent record offense, perhaps he had 2 years of ___ and then it stricken from his record by the time he enrolls in college?

Crime Reporter

Unlike Michigan, all of this stuff is public record. If I lived in Broward County, I could go to the courthouse and pull all his files from this case, and pay a standard fee per page. Florida has one of the better public records law in the country. In Michigan, we would have to FOIA this information.

It may not be fair to Dorsey, since the details are murky and the real truth is not clear, but Rich Rodriguez is not in the position where he can take a kid with even the appearance of this kind of stuff. All it will do is provide an opportunity for the RR-haters to bring up all the horseshit yet again, and then he has to defend himself for the millionth time against the character assassination that's been his lot ever since he came here. Boren, Wermers, Feagin, the Freep, all that crap will bubble to the surface, and will submerge the other side of the story, which is what the Mealers represent.

I wonder, though, if this is the reason that five coaches went down to see him—maybe they're trying to get the most accurate read possible on Dorsey.

RR took a kid from suburban Maryland with a criminal conviction while he was at WVU. He took a lot of heat for it, but last I read the kid turned out to be a good student. The problem is that RR is in a much different situation now regarding public perception of him, and if it ever gets to the point where RR's fate is hanging in the balance in the eyes of David Brandon, taking kids that are "questionable" in the eyes of some people can tip the scales. It's a gamble that I don't think RR can afford to take, or even needs to.

TESOE

This sort of issue happens with kids. Each has to be looked at on a case by case basis. Look at Trulon Henry at Illinois. He's a 25 y.o. JR who was guilty of armed robbery. He's come out publically and is making good on his time.

Cissoko couldn't get away with missing a study table on RR's watch. This will work it's way out soon enough. I'm all for Demar if he's all for Michigan.

Crime Reporter

January 30th, 2010 at 11:12 AM ^

I realize the coaches have a lot more information than someone who did an arrest search at the Broward County Sheriff's Office Web site. At the same time, RR does not need this type of heat, fair or not.

These are serious charges (although it may have been later dropped), and I would much rather take someone like a Parker or Knight than a kid with this type of background, no matter his athletic ceiling. The risk is too great.

The knuckleheads covering recruiting on ESPN radio earlier today singled out Dorsey as one of the high-profile guys who haven't committed yet, and they said it was between FSU and USC for Dorsey. No mention of Michigan. I guess they don't read MGoBlog.
