Today in worst-kept secrets:

A source with knowledge of the situation has confirmed to CFT that Green received a release from his UM scholarship earlier this week and will transfer out of the Wolverines football program.

Green split time early in his career, alternating frustrating cuts with promising footwork and power as he attempted to slim back down from 250-260 pounds. He did that but the vision never came and when Harbaugh came in he fell out of the rotation in favor of De'Veon Smith, Drake Johnson, Ty Isaac, Karan Higdon, and Sione Houma. A fullback in front of you on the depth chart is never good. Green was left home from the bowl with an "internal matter," and that seemed to be that.

He's got one year left and also graduated in 3.5 years, so he can play immediately. Michigan now has 20 officially open slots; Green's departure was certainly part of the existing reckoning for Michigan's class size and won't increase how many scholarships Michigan has to play with. We currently figure that is 28-30.

Perhaps but generally taking the huge outlier rather than the common condition is not a high value bet.  Let's see how he does next year before making this type of assumption.  The vast majority of guys who have left UM (or most schools) have not gone to the NFL.

It would be fascinating to know how many NFL starters (or at least 2 deep guys) transferred out of their primary school (excluding JUCOs).

Rawls UM career:

  • 73 carries, 333 yds = 4.6 ave

Rawls CMU career:

  • 210 carries, 1103 yds = 5.3 ave

================

Green UM career:

  • 212 carries, 898 yds = 4.2 ave

Green non UM career:

  • TBD!

But clearly D Green's production on the field was nowhere near his or anyone else's projections. Glad he got his degree and can still play elsewhere but Brian himself stated in this post he at one time weighed close to 260lbs. apparently!?!? Cumong man...

Sad thing about this was he always carried a positive demeanor and never had any off the field issues until the bowl game practices.

"Hardly anyone like his high school taps relative to ranking"

Hah.  Yes judging by the 2015 postings everyone nailed Green.

But I'd encourage you to go back and read posts about him in the 3-5 months after he committed.  The #1 comment was "when he would take Fitz's spot?" - in game 1 or if it would take 3-4 games and the beginning of Big 10 season.

I did remember a few saying "I think Smith will eventually turn out better" but the vast majority of us were on the hype train.  He was going to be a monster "bowling ball" leading us to NCs behind the highly rated OL classes of 2012/2013.  The other Derrick (Henry) ended up being what most here thought Green would be.

I never saw what people saw in Green - he didn't look particularly fast or tough in his clips - but I always hoped I was wrong. Obviously, many analysts saw something they liked, and they invariably know more about these recruits than I do. Unfortunately, on this one I should have trusted my gut.

All-airport team. Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.

Glad he got his degree. The chasm between his ranking and his performance on the field was vast.

Those that questioned his recruiting hype did so rightly. I was not among them. I wanted to believe.

I wish him happy trails and I hope his next stop serves him well.

In Green's case...he's been gone since Penn State week. Once Sione started lining up 7 yards in the backfield, it was a wrap.
