OT - Wisconsin equivalent of MHSAA takes Participation Medal a step further, bans innocuous chants

Submitted by FormAFarkingWall on

The Post-Crescent in Appleton, Wis., obtained an email sent from WIAA director of communications Todd Clark to member schools in December, describing what should be considered taunting and disrespectful actions that are unacceptable, including “you can’t do that,” “fundamentals,” “air ball,” “there’s a net there,” “sieve,” “we can’t hear you,” “scoreboard,” and “season’s over.”

I guess dead silence is what they are looking for, or perhaps an increase in FT percentage.  Fortunately MHSAA has no plans to follow suit.

The best way to raise our children is to teach them that when they're adults, nothing bad every happens, no one will hurt your feelings, and everyone wins everything. Yaaaayyyyy

I live in Wisconsin, played sports, the WIAA is a total joke.  This isn't going to stop anything.  The WIAA has been putting out releases like this for years and its continued.  They still havent figured out how to balance between rural and urban schools.  They have schools in the heart of Milwaukee that participate in the smallest divisions in the state for playoffs.

This country will be a better place when the "Participation Trophy" Generation dies out. Seriously, cheap college and decent careers out of highschool? The Baby Boomers had it made.

I think the "participation trophy" thing is so overblown.  Kids have been getting ribbons and trophys for "participating" for generations.  It has never changed that kids want to win and know the final score.

It's nice to be given something to show that you did something.  It's also nice to win.  Kids are smart enough to know the difference. At this point, the anti-participation trophy thing is just a meaningless trope, generally repeated by the type of parents that get way, way too emotionally invloved in their children's athletic success.

You are probably mostly joking, but I'll bite anyway.  You know the people who run your HOA live in your development, right?  AKA, they are your neighbors.

Then again, being on an HOA board is a volunteer position and is a ton of work.  The smart move is to stay the hell away from it, so maybe you are right and only your moron neighbors volunteer to be on the board.

we have some people in our neighborhood who HATE being on our HOA board but keep running specifically to keep a handful of authoritarian a-holes OFF of the board.  They are the ones that show up at every meeting to complain about EVERY SINGLE CENT of money that is spent on ANYTHING because they don't see how it directly helps them personally and want to spend the entire meeting bitching about some unbelievably minor thing that one of their neighbors has done that nobody cares about.

Yep.  My neighbor guy is a dink.  He has complained for the last 2 years (maybe more, I haven't been there long enough) about the concrete barries at the end of our walking path that isn't even close to our houses being an eyesore and that they should be removed and a visually appealing gate be put up instead.  He obviously doesn't get the message that the city owns it and not the HOA but whatever.  He'll keep bitching, they'll keep not doing anything.  He's the type I DON'T want on the board.

I think ALL HOA meetings break down into some form of that eventually.  I generally have very few complaints about my neighborhood, so I go to the meetings just to make sure none of the busybodies manage to get anything crazy done.  And to hear if anything big is coming down the pike.

I remember we once had a heated discussion about people not wanting their neighbors to park on the street because it "lowered home values" or something.    I was like "We can't stop random STRANGERS from coming into the neighborhood and parking on our street.   We don't own the street, the city does.   It's 100% legal to park on the street.    What are you going to do to people?

People get their britches knotted up over the oddest things.

Well they shouldn't be able to do that...before the subdivision was built the developer's lawyers would have gotten together with the municipality's lawyers to craft CCRs (rules) for the development to abide by, ie allowable driveway materials, architectural standards, minimum landscaping requirements, stormwater maintenance plans, etc.  So they (and you) have to abide by that document.

You pay extra for the shared maintenance of stuff like detention, snow removal, landscaping.

I'm coming off like some crazy HOA lover, but I'm not.  I work in the land development industry and deal with HOAs from time to time, so I've had the "opportunity" to learn about the banal intricacies of HOAs.

The Baby Boomers are the worst generation in history.

They've done nothing,  taken everything, complained about it all, think they know everything, know nothing and let their greed run up astounding debt to the detriment of every generation to follow.

Screw the Baby Boomers.  Dead serious. Your generation is the worst.

Totally agree!

Still trying to figure out if the Millenials are just as bad, or if they are just like every generation at 20. Naive, opinionated and think their generation will solve all the worlds problems, real or imagined.

I'm hoping it's just that every time a Millenial twits he took a shit, it makes the news.

Except most Millenials (mid-to-upper 20s) don't at all conform to that description.  They are the generation that is burdened with massive student loan debt, but - on the whole - is handling it well.  For every story about a PhD barrista, there's two about millenials with significant loan debt, but they are paying it off with a decent job.  They'll have to wait on their firsts (car, house, errr marriage), but they are also one of the more financially savvy generations as well.

Certain schools/ADs have been clamping down on "air ball" for over a decade now.  Anything that can be considered taunting a specific player have been a 50/50 proposition in high schools since the early 2000s.  Depends on the AD and school.

I don't necessarily think it's bad.  I'd hate it as a kid in the stands, but whatever. I'm around a lot of basketball student sections and have been my whole life - some of the best student sections never take aim at the opponents.
