Bill Greene reports that RB/WR/DB Ross Taylor-Douglas is going to transfer:

Taylor-Douglas bounced between various positions during his tenure at Michigan without ever finding a home; last year he got garbage time carries as a tailback. With a crowded depth chart the prospect of playing time was unlikely next year.

Taylor-Douglas's departure opens up a scholarship for next year. Michigan now has 24 recruits and approximately 17 spots if everyone on the roster right now returns. Obviously that will not happen, so prepare for a number of posts like this in the future.

Congrats to Ross.  He got a history degree from UM on scholarship and now gets to go and play football while getting a master's degree... again on scholarship.  That's not a bad deal at all, and it's not an easy thing to pull off with the demands of a football schedule.

Clearly he was forced out to make roster room...

Congrats to Ross on getting his degree and best luck in wherever his future takes him.  I used to think the grad transfer rule was a sleezy loophole for football factories but I am coming around to thinking it is a good idea.  It encourages a player to earn a degree and provides programs and players with an opporunity to reassess needs and for a player to continue a football career and an education a place that may be better suited to his needs.  I think Jake Rudock sold me on it.

There was also Russel Wilson a few years ago, a closer to home B1G example.

So I do think Michigan's succesful use has spurred his change of heart.

Personally, Grad Transfers should never be looked down upon or thought of as a sleazy move. The guy (or gal) is considered a 'student-athlete' and completed the requirements of a bachelor's degree. So why the rancor/hostility if they want to go somewhere else and play?

Like for a 5th year, you've graduated and aren't guaranteed that 5th season but for a 3 year grad can a coach tell them we're not renewing or are you theoretically guaranteed 4 years no matter when you graduate?

I may very well be wrong, but I always thought that the scholarships weren't even technically for 4 years.  They are a year-to-year deal, no??   (A school CAN give a 4 year scholarship, but that is not the norm)

NCAA FAQ saying 1 year scholarships are the minimum

NCAA FAQ

Multi year scholarships are allowed (Jan 2015)

Is it a requirement  in orer to to play that the grad degree must be in something that UofM does not offer?

What if they want a program UofM does have but want to play a 5th year?
