Olaniyan just wasn't feelin the vibe at Michigan and was never inclined to stay instate. MSU made a big push for him, but he opted out of state. Not sure on Austin Gray. We need LB's and he's a true MLB, you would think we'd be all over him. But I've never seen his film, so I guess I'll trust the coaches on this one.

Gray was a kid who would have had to prove himself to the coaches in his senior season to earn an offer. He had a knee injury, and never got the chance, so Michigan never offered him. He's apparently a big M fan who probably would have been blue with an offer.

You know their agenda is to make Rich Rod look bad by saying MSU owns in-state recruiting. This post just reminds me why I don't read anything those people write anymore (as if I needed a reminding).

Why are you reading threads clearly labeled Freep if it bothers you that much?
Best of the Midwest is done by recruiter in the region...the Freep just organizes it. And McCabe's best in the State often doesn't reflect that.
It could be revealing if the Best of Mid. ranks Michigan prospects much higher than him; or a reality check if they don't.

Sure it isn't based off of HS stats, and not college potential? Gholston and Bullough had huge years, and thats the only way I can see Langford being in the top 5.

Not their college recruiting guru. So yes, I'm sure he's ranking them as they played in High School. Much like All Big Ten Team isn't ranking who the best pro prospect is, etc.

I'm not going to cut down the kid, because I truly don't know how well he will do at the next level. However, imagine the stats some of the skill position players on this list would have had if they would have been playing in the second to lowest division in the MHSAA playoffs. I would be surprised if Bullough lined up once across from a kid with D1 offers. Of course he's going to dominate......

like you said it was at Div. 7. I played in that division and they don't produce a lot of Div 1 Talent. He played against kids that were smaller and slower, so yes, his stats were inflated because of the competition. It will be interesting to see how well he can adjust to playing against bigger and faster players.

Look at the schedule these guys played this season. Not to rip on small towns, but they beat up on schools like Kalkaska and Mancelona. They pasted Elk Rapids something like 77-0. Not much competition for a school with a huge athletic budget that attracts a lot of talent. It would have been very interesting to see how they would have performed had they faced stiffer competition.

Van Dyke came out of high school in 1996. Henne didn't get to Michigan until 2004.

But the recruits of August, 1997 would commit in February, 1998. That big class was the one we pulled in after the National Championship. It's a little different than the Championship, where people rightly say 1997 Championship, though technically it's awarded in '98, after the bowls. You're right, but I can see the confusion. No worries.

So Clair Voyannt and I were both wrong. He wasn't in the class of '96 or '97. He graduated in '98. I played against him when I was in high school. I thought he was a senior that year, but he must have been a junior.

He had the two year "I like 'em both" seasons in 98 and 99 (Brady's years), and was the QB (but for the injury time at the beginning with Narvarre), beat Auburn, then went pro in 01 to baseball right before Spring Practice. Or could have gone pro as a junior into the NFL draft and been picked ahead of Vick at probably #1 overall.

Henson was part of the recruiting class of '98 - I remember this pretty distinctly, because I was a freshman that year, too. Van Dyke enrolled at MSU the same year. The local media tried to make it sound like they were comparable talents.

No kidding. I saw Hill play twice this year, and he's a borderline D-1 guy, probably. They say he's a lot like Hart, but I never saw Hart lose 4 fumbles in 1 game.

These kinds of rankings mean basically nothing.
And, really, even if you don't like the Freep, Mick McCabe has been one of the top sports journalists in the state since basically the beginning of time. Especially when it comes to high school basketball.

However, time has developed a severe case of "cronyism" in Mr. McCabe, particularly in his HS football coverage. If Devin has played at CC, Rice, FH Harrison, or Traverse City, Mick would be writing articles about how the NFL should grant him an exemption and let him enter the draft this year.
Also, McCabe was a HUGE Carr fan/supporter from his days at Westland John Glenn. He has been down on Michigan recruits since Carr left UM.
All of this, just IMEO...
