Your MGoName

Submitted by GoBlueScott on

I can't remember this being posted, if it's ever been done, so if it somehow slipped my attention I'll apologize now. Even so, we have quite a few new peeps around here, and I am constantly wondering why you chose your MGoName.

Some, of course, are obvious.

Some are not. Like, "Brian." Always confused me.

Why did you choose yours?

I'm really hoping Misopogon answers.

I was born in Michigan many years ago. I moved around a few times as a kid, but I've lived in Kingsport, Tn. for the last 27 years. You can take the boy out of Michigan but you can't take the Maize and Blue out of the boy. Henceforth I'm Tn Wolverine.

Jim Harbaugh S…

Preseason game.

Jim Harbaugh, much to my joy was on the Lions at the time. Harbaugh got on the field with the Lions backup O-Line who could not block at all he was running for his life.

After a few plays my buddy exclaimed something along the lines of "Look at that Jim Harbaugh scramble."

That phrase stuck with me.

Well, bacon was my nickname in high school. There was a kid in my class that was partially deaf and just didn't hear my last name right, misinterpreted it as "bacon." While we were in gym class, we were playing a game and he said "who's got bacon?" and it just flourished from there on out. 14 was my number in baseball and 31 was my lowest 9 hole score in golf. So I just combined the numbers.

The King In Yellow

January 28th, 2010 at 2:46 PM ^

My name is from a collection of short stories by Robert Chambers. I got into the whole mythos of Chambers and guys like H.P. Lovecraft from a metal band from the metro-detroitish area called The Yellow Sign. I guess it would've made more sense to go with The King In Maize, but it's too late now.

Initials and current city of residence. If I tried to come up with something creative I would overthink it to the point that my head would explode a la "Scanners."

Six Zero

January 28th, 2010 at 2:54 PM ^

A. My name started out as a sort of alias when I was designing and posting on some art/design sites, and it's now evolved into the identity of my branding design freelance work.

B. It's actually an old hockey number I wore for several years during the 90's when everyone who was anyone had to have crazy circus numbers. Originally I wore #6 then added the zero to be 'different.' Turns out you can be 'different' just by being good, so I've sinced dropped the zero and gone back to the single #6.

C. I am, in fact, actually Grant Bowman. Sometimes I cry at night because you all so rarely mention me, even though I was a captain and 2nd team All-Conference. All you ever care about is the PUNTER and the backup QB who busts rhymes!!

D. I turned sixty the week I registered to become a user here at MGoBlog. Sheesh, I remember the good ol' days when being a dedicated Michigan fan meant you bought maize and blue plaid pants out of the back of Don Canham's station wagon, but now it's all about tweeters and tooters and stalking young boys and talking on their face or something. Dardnest thing!

Well, I did a little Internet searching to see if I could give you a better answer than the truth.

MGoUser Stubob once pointed out that it's an anagram for "I MGoSpoon", which next time I'm in bed with Misopogal I'm bringing this up.

From my SBNation profile:

Born from an illicit night in a Howard Johnson Inn after too much Honest Ben's Lemonabe, the Misopogon retired early from his job as apostate emperor of Rome soon after learning the whole "burn your ships" thing was supposed to just be a metaphor. He now resides in Detroit, Michigan, where, when not blogging, he typically sits on his porch and yells at Fernando Rodney to tuck in his shirt and straighten his damn fool hat.

Actually, I was "Misopogon" long before I found MGoBlog. I've used it as a user name on boards and such since college. It's my name on SB Nation. It's my name on friends' blogs and friends' friends' blogs. It's my name on my own short-lived blog. It's my name on World of Warcraft

(I was the dwarf character before Cartman!)

It's a lot better than previous nicknames I've had, such as "IMMAUEL" in the Log Log, or "Twinkie: the Creampuff Hider of Nourishment," or "Fishblades" or "Fun 'n Games."

I chose the name as my universal Internet handle after reading The Misopogon for an Ancient History class at M. It's a play by the Emperor Julian that literally means "Beard Hater." It was written when the Emperor was making a visit to Antioch, as kind of a spoof on the plays put on by the Christians, who dominated the city and hated his guts. Think of it like George W. Bush going on Saturday Night Live at the peak of his unpopularity and doing a perfect parody of George W. Bush.

I liked the idea of a Roman Emperor walking into a nest of people who wished him very ill things (I get to a lot of away games) and having a sense of humor about himself. Plus, I have a beard and get shit for it, so there's some solidarity. The whole ship-burning thing was just a fortunate coincidence -- Julian the Apostate wasn't the first nor the last guy to actually try this, but he was almost certainly the least successful guy to burn his ships behind him.

"Misopogon" is also kind of a homophone for "Michigan." And also, the first time I posted on MGoBlog (I was a regular reader at the old loc for like a year) some guy said this name was awesome, and I was like, "I'm home."

I always pronounce this in my head with the first two O's long and the emphasis on the third syllable...

Miso (like the soup) PO' gon (rhymes with Don)

Hmmmm, not exactly I guess. Can't believe I am admitting this.

My name is my interweb name since I had the create the first one forever ago. My birthday is September 11th.

Eyebrowse

-----How can you look past those eyebrows when looking at Craig Roh?! Also, I do a helluva lot more browsing than posting on the site. Thus, I cleverly (a.k.a. not so cleverly) reworked "eyebrows" to read "eyebrowse".

M for my allegiance to U of M, my alma mater 1997 BS biophysics
Soccer for my favorite sport and the one I played club for at U of M.
10- my favorite number. I have had a weird facination with this number since I was young. I always liked the roundness of it. Also, I have a whole pseudothesis about how all of mankind can be broken down into the number ten (1 is male, 0 female, binary, yin-yang, etc.)

Bosch

of club players from that time. I also graduated in '97 and played quite a bit of soccer, albeit intramurals and rec leagues.

Was Rod on the team when you played? He's the only one I remember that I can put a name to the face.

I grew tired of my moniker from previous Michigan message boards, so I set out to make a new one last summer. In truth, I was on haloscan and Rivals dating back to 2005.

And BlueГолос didn't sound that good.

Braylon Edwards in the 2nd half against MSU. Or Jerame Tuman releasing upfield off a play-action rollout.

Or, John Madden coming in off a tape-to-tape pass from Dale Rominski while shorthanded.

(Damn...I need a cigarette.)

Bennie

January 28th, 2010 at 7:42 PM ^

Bennie Oosterbaan, and the rich tradition of Michigan sports.

3 time All-American in football. 2 time All-American basketball standout. All Big Ten baseball standout. 9 varsity letters.

Bob Forman, in 1979, said "If there is an All-American among All-Americans, then this man is it. Mr. Bennie Oosterbaan."

Bo said, "perhaps no one cherished the Michigan spirit as much as Oosterbaan." "He believed in Michigan and wasn't afraid to say so."

Tradition means something. Not every school has it, and no one has what Michigan has. All too often, we forget that.

This was a truly inspired topic. We should "revive" this thread annually for the newbies to learn and tell.

I'm a Michigan grad and wanted a name that was generic and forgettable. I work in the sports broadcast industry and do not want to attract unnecessary attention to myself. That being said, I'm getting more comfortable with the idea of sharing my experiences with the MGoBlog community. You all seem like such a responsible and privacy-respecting lot who would get a kick out of the stuff I've seen.

MCalibur

January 28th, 2010 at 7:27 PM ^

The name itself is Excalibur modified for Michigan purposes.

Also, I try to do things in a way that would make Michigan proud just as Michigan makes me proud. I try to be M caliber. Couldn't spell it both ways so I went with the sword.

It was also the name of a private wetpaint wiki I started in 2008 that sought to encourage fact based discussion and debate regarding Michigan Football...and other things. No one posted but me and it stopped being fun. And then I found MGoBlog.

Born in the Buckeye State - OSU fan by birth...Born a Catholic - ND fan by religion.

Moved to West Michigan when I was about 30 and attempted to remain a Buckeye fan for a number of years. My wife went to Michigan to complete her Masters and PhD and we ended up moving to A2 a few years back.

Both of my sons-in-law were born in Ohio, graduated from Michigan. They helped push my conversion.

I have been to the Horseshoe on both sides of the fence and now I realize what a bunch of lowlifes they have in their fan base.
