Durkin Recounts Epic Basketball Game vs. Harbaugh
D.J. Durkin was on the Jim Rome show this afternoon, and Rome asked him about a legendary one-on-one basketball game he played against Harbaugh when they were both at Stanford. Durkin confirmed that the game lasted for about 90 minutes, that there was blood on the court, and that no fouls were called.
"Who won?" Rome asked
Durkin said something to the effect of, "Well, as an assistant, job security was important to me, so let's just leave it at that."
I'm guessing that scene will be a pivotal one whenever HBO gets around to making "The Jim Harbaugh Story."

He missed a last second winner because his mind was elsewhere.

Yeah, thinking about crab cakes.

Yum! Durkin will discover this is the best part of Maryland. The rest of it is pretty meh

CRAB CAKES AND FOOTBALL. THAT'S WHAT MARYLAND DOES.

I have seen no evidence to support this.

Well done. No one could miss what you did there.

Harbaugh is about to shoot a freethrow, Drevno is there with a headseat on, and a male cheerleader is making his O face.
January 5th, 2016 at 2:35 PM ^
The male cheerleader's left hand is up that female cheerleader's skirt, and his fingers are about to go "TOOKLE TOOKLE TOOKLE!!!"

But why is the doctor from Idiocracy there wearing a State Farm jersey and bumble bee sleeve?

Right, kick ass. Well, don't want to sound like a dick or nothin', but it says on your chart that your shit is fucked up...

all of the pluses. and also, my wife used to be like you, now she's a pilot

half court shot.
This was a little bit after he got hired last year and was on some ESPN telecast.
January 5th, 2016 at 2:48 PM ^
Definitely a half court shot. He's holding the ball as if he were to push rather than shoot. I don't want to believe in a Harbaugh that shoots free throws like that.
January 5th, 2016 at 2:21 PM ^
a 90 minute game of 1-on-1 just sounds awful
January 5th, 2016 at 6:24 PM ^
Might take twice that long.

Durkin was "shirts."

Shirts vs. Blouses.
Game. Blouses...

Durkin??? I hope jim runs the score up next year in AA
January 5th, 2016 at 2:33 PM ^
how things ended for Durkin at Michigan. If we're up by 40 and Habaugh keeps going for 2 on every TD drive I think it'll be safe to assume that the split was less than amicable.

The only people who are taking this personally are MGOBLOG commentors. I really don't understand why a guy taking a promotion is such a big deal. We all knew he wasn't going to be a long term guy coming in.
January 5th, 2016 at 3:21 PM ^
Seriously. The dude contributed to the success of the team this year, why do people here discount that because he took another job? Do they honestly believe that had he not been considering other jobs he would have figured out how to stop Ohio State from manhandling our front line? Based on our issues against Indiana I don't think it was gameplan so much as personnel.
January 5th, 2016 at 3:31 PM ^
It honestly boggles my mind...they make it seem that him being here would've made up an almost 30 point difference. Maybe Fisch/Drevno were taking interviews too since the offense only scored 13 points. /s

BECAUSE HE CHOSE SOMEONE ELSE OVER US! HE SAW OUR LOVE, AND HE REJECTED IT. REJECTED IT!!! SO YOU KNOW WHAT, SCREW HIM. I HOPE HE IS HAPPY WITH HIS CHOICE, AND I HOPE HE GETS HERPES AND HEPATITIS C AND DIES!!!
(That is my "scorned woman" answer to your question...)
January 5th, 2016 at 3:25 PM ^
Right...people need to get over it already. The guy left for a promotion. I'm pretty sure he asked Harbaugh if he could interview at Maryland and was probably given the ok. Kirby Smart is probably taking some time getting his staff together and recruiting for Georgia while still implementing a game plan for next Monday's NC game. For the final time we didn't lose because a coach took an interview at Maryland.

Well if you are pretty sure, then I feel a lot better about it now. Especially if he was probably given the ok.
January 5th, 2016 at 3:30 PM ^
an issue with him. I also don't have any affection for him.
January 5th, 2016 at 3:40 PM ^
I ain't mad. But I will continue to believe he mailed in that last gameplan against OSU.
January 5th, 2016 at 9:11 PM ^
I'm still kinda mad. It will probably be a lasting feeling for me. Just feels so very wrong to interview that week, of all weeks.

I'm still trying to figure out what Harbaugh had against Northwestern, maybe Jim and Pat played skeeball?
January 5th, 2016 at 2:44 PM ^
I remember Durkin talking about this when he first came to Ann Arbor too - one of Stanford's players said something to the effect that it was a low-scoring game and someone did at one point call a foul but they were made fun of for doing so (in a sporting way, I assume). Durkin also described the game as something akin to the basketball version of "Rollerball" too - I thought that was amusing and probably very Harbaugh.
January 5th, 2016 at 3:05 PM ^
Like the fight scene between Keith David and Roddy Piper in "They Live", with a basketball.
January 5th, 2016 at 3:11 PM ^
Harbaugh started to run the read option, Durkin couldn't stop it
January 5th, 2016 at 3:51 PM ^
I've seen that a hundred times. And it never ceases to disgust me.
January 5th, 2016 at 3:46 PM ^
Was this the time where a recruit was waiting courtside for his visit with Harbaugh and eventually just left because he didn't stop playing? Most people got a kick out of this and chalked it up to Harbaugh being good ol' competitive Harbaugh, but this story always rubbed me the wrong way because of the disrespect for the kid that Harbaugh's actions showed. Don't get me wrong--I love the guy and think he walks on water, but that story always makes me a little uneasy.
January 5th, 2016 at 3:52 PM ^
Look, I wasn't happy about the game plan vs. OSU and I have a broken plate to prove it. But I think it's a pretty serious and low thing to accuse Durkin of mailing it in. I mean, you know who else has been unable to stop a fully functional Meyer+OSU rushing attack the last few years? EVERYONE.
January 5th, 2016 at 4:04 PM ^
Gameplan was poor but I don't think he mailed it in, he just didn't know what to do. Durkin has shown to be a good recruiter but his coaching acumen is still unproven to me. We had a monster dline so blitzes were not needed and a awesome secondary. Year 1 of Matison showed a big improvement and creativity. Durkin is still a ?

What about those years he had a good defense in Florida?
