Game On: Cold War II Comment Count

Brian

Rick Comley said that he didn't think this was happening, but apparently it is:

Michigan and Michigan State will take their hockey rivalry to another level in December when they play outdoors at the Big House.

The deal was recently finalized, a U-M official said, and the Wolverines and Spartans will take the ice at Michigan Stadium on Dec. 11 at 3 p.m.

A game at Michigan Stadium would shatter the hockey attendance record—still held by the first Cold War, but under threat later this year—if it sells out.

Won't it be dark by the end of the game? Seems weird that the first time they try this in the Big House, they would bring in lights. And if that's the case, why bring in lights for a game that is going to start in the daytime. Wouldn't it make more sense to have the game completely in day or completely at night. Weirdness

Sunset is at 5:03, and the game will end at about 5:20 or so. The sun will be very far south in mid-December, and if the it happens to be clear (I know it's not likely, given the time of year), the sun might be in the eyes of the goalie in the North endzone during the first period. Maybe the boxes will cast a shadow over the ice, though.

I thought this had been known for a while. Came about shortly after Wisconsin announced a similar event for Camp Randall. Question I have is how are they going to pull this off in the event of bad weather. Will they use some kind of high cover for the rink if there is snow or rain? Should be a lot of fun. Will there be cheerleaders?

It has been "known" for a while insofar as Michigan had announced they were going to do something like this, but there hadn't been a formal announcement setting the date/game time/opponent in stone. Light snow and rain should be manageable. Anything heavy that would impede play would probably cause the game to be delayed until later that night/the next day (depending on when things are supposed to clear up).

any word on how tickets are selling for the Camp Randall game? (i've got mine.) last i heard it sounded like we aren't going to threaten the Cold War record 10 days from now.

Got a group of 30 tickets for the game for friends and family and still had a waiting list of 20 people. I am already at 100+ for this game. Am starting to feed my 4 month old ground up paczki to begin the process of thickening her blood enough to last through this game. One question: can they please schedule an alumni game before hand? I really want to see the double team of Navy Seal Bob Gassoff and JMFJ just fuck Cory Tropp's shit up. I know Tropp's a junior this year and would have another yr of eligibility left, but that doesn't mean Gassoff can't just go into the MSU locker room and drag him out a la classic NWA and watch him and JMFJ recreate the Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, and Four Horseman beat down of TJ Magnum circa 1988.... "I don't think I can capture this correctly Bob, but yes, the TV audience did just hear 100,000 people call a 19 yr old kid a sieve... and something about a black hole...."

Should Carl be doing the PA for the game, or should it be every one moved over from Yost? Also, will this mean that we get 70K people doing the "I Can't Turn You Loose" Dance between the second and the third?

I'm most interested in how the ticket situation will be with students. Conventional thinking would be students can order them with football tickets or just have a sale for it, but personally I'd like to see the hockey season-ticket holders get the best student seats and then add the rest around them. Gotta keep the core together to lead the chants.

Awesome! I tried to get my dad up to the Ferris State game last week, since he's a Ferris State allum, but he was a sourpuss and didn't want to drive to AA after work. THIS will get him there.

do you mean the strategic conflict that occurred between the world's major superpowers between the years of 1945 and 1991? We may have some trouble shattering that attendance record, but at least the golf course can handle all the cars...
