What about the Lucas elbow I mean really? IT IS exactly the same thing Harris did last year. I don't get it.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:10 PM ^
I thought it looked more intentional than Manny's. If Lucas had hit him in the nose and made him bleed like Kramer it would have seemed much worse. I say lucky for Kalin that didn't happen or it would have been bye bye.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:12 PM ^
Slow computer, you beat me to it. I like how they showed the Manny elbow after it as a comparison.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:12 PM ^
Ball in both hands. If he had let go of the ball with one hand, it would have been a T and ejection. Because he kept both hands on the ball, they can't call a T on that.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:18 PM ^
That didn't stop the refs in last year's PU game from tossing Manny.
January 27th, 2010 at 8:45 AM ^
Frankly, I don't think Harris should have been suspended last year - it something that happens in basketball. Consequently, I thought their handling of Lucas was appropriate.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:05 PM ^
man at that point in the game you cant call that, even though i wish they did. As a former basketball player its understandable as to why they didn't call it. Great play call though!
January 26th, 2010 at 9:08 PM ^
No, you can, and should, call that. That is the problem with basketball refs. Rules don't change within the last minute; the refs should treat it as any other time. If anything, they should watch closer at the end, because those plays are so important.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:13 PM ^
As a ref I agree that the rules shouldn't change just because there isn't much time left on the clock. The only thing in this case is that without that third ref on the court I don't know if either ref had a good angle to see the shirt grab.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:24 PM ^
a free throw shooting contest
January 26th, 2010 at 9:59 PM ^
...Except for maybe the players who have a chance to legitimately win.
January 26th, 2010 at 10:36 PM ^
I accept that the refs didn't call a foul on the final play.
However, I am disgusted that they didn't call an intentional foul on the play before that.
What a gut wrenching loss..........
January 26th, 2010 at 9:05 PM ^
That's basketball. Almost everything can be called a foul. The boys played a great game, executed the play, it just didn't fall. Heartbreaking loss, no doubt, but it was there.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:08 PM ^
Lame and tiresome.
The elbow and the last play could have and probably should have been fouls, but it was a physical game by both teams.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:07 PM ^
Let's not have sour grapes, we took them down to the wire. Let's not make excuses, because when Sparty does we are all over them making fun. We played well and lost to the number 5 team in the country by 1. It's not that bad.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:26 PM ^
Actually, by strict definition, the sour-grape response would be to say something like "It wouldn't have mattered if we'd won, anyway, so I don't care."
January 26th, 2010 at 10:12 PM ^
Fair enough, then lets not look like whiny bitches.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:07 PM ^
Cannot call that with 1 second left. It was a good play design, Sims just couldn't make it.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:07 PM ^
and then get jobbed at home. The best teams aren't gritty they just get the calls from refs because they are MSU or UW.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:07 PM ^
Shooting 32% on the night is what killed us. 25% on 3's. Not gonna win too many games like that, especially against the #5 team in the nation.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:10 PM ^
to our 4. You won't win many games with a -14 TO margin.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:18 PM ^
nobody should've won.
Except Jalen because he's fucking awesome.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:45 PM ^
That was the best red suit I've ever seen.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:57 PM ^
It was CORDUROY! He's the man.
January 27th, 2010 at 9:43 AM ^
Better than the red pinstripe draft suit?
January 27th, 2010 at 1:17 AM ^
Erin Andrews wins every time.
Jalen is a close 2nd.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:51 AM ^
If I ever get the time, I want to watch games and see how many times shots are taken with less than 10 seconds off the shot clock. I think that statistic more than many will provide an indication of the outcome.
When they were patient and ran the offense last night, we did well. When they got excited and started shooting early and often from behind the line MSU caught bask up. This is what young teams do.
January 27th, 2010 at 11:56 AM ^
IMO, the stretch that exemplifies this happened late in the first half when we were rolling and had a 7 point lead. Our next four possessions were all 3s that were taken with less than 10 seconds off the shock clock, resulting in that lead evaporating and all of the momentum going back to MSU.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:08 PM ^
Gotta learn to shoot more than anything.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:12 PM ^
That's about it. Lucas hit a shot and Sims didn't. Albeit he was grabbed, but you still have to make that shot.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:36 PM ^
Down the stretch we had 2 airballs and gave them a small window. Lucas hit it, we didn't.
Next time Sparty, Next time....
January 26th, 2010 at 9:13 PM ^
it's a good no-call.
On a positive note, I think Vogrich became a member of Club Trillion
January 26th, 2010 at 9:17 PM ^
Wish he would have had the presence to bring it down and pop the shot. I think given the time, it would have been possible (though admittedly risky).
Looked like it was supposed to be a full-on oop if possible. Fantastic call, great game. Wish the outcome would have been different, but it is what it is. Lets keep cheering these guys on for the rest of the year.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:15 PM ^
is that it really shouldn't be an ejection. It's part of basketball, and it's the price you pay for tight defense. It's a hard foul, there's no intent to harm, so call it like any other hard foul with no intent to harm.
But when Manny does the EXACT same thing, and the refs point to the rule book and say "a rule's a rule, you have to be ejected," that's the problem. If it's a stupid rule, then it's a stupid rule all the time.
January 26th, 2010 at 10:03 PM ^
edit: That's a tough loss, not many expected us to contend but there's nothing we can do about one of the officials getting hurt. It is nearly impossible to make every call as a two man group
January 26th, 2010 at 9:20 PM ^
wow. I'm just so disappointed. it'd be nice to have a third ref out there to have position to call that. would have been a lot nicer for sims to bury it in spite of that. not sure how I'm typing this post sans heart as it's been ripped out and fed to the dogs.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:25 PM ^
As a Michigan fan, that just now happened to you? I would say you are pretty lucky, because it happened to me a long time ago...
January 26th, 2010 at 9:22 PM ^
DeShawn pushed off and then was grabbed. Cannot call one without the other. Good no call. Great game. Shitty ending.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:25 PM ^
And his arm was being tied up and his jersey was being held?
I have no idea WTF you were watching
January 26th, 2010 at 9:25 PM ^
sometimes to continue to grow you need to pass through games like this. That said, the 3 pointer, with 50 some secs to go and the lead, killed me.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:40 PM ^
That being said........I agree.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:24 PM ^
The three previous possessions were what killed us. An airball by Stu, missed defensive rebound, Airball by Sims. So heartbreaking.
January 26th, 2010 at 11:21 PM ^
The missed defensive rebound is the play that sticks in my craw. You don't expect to score every time down, but you should rebound your opponent's miss, especially on a three. We did a pretty good job on the defensive glass most of the night but that one was a killer.
January 27th, 2010 at 12:35 AM ^
YES! It would have made a huge difference being up 3 with 38 seconds left...
Generally I'm against Manny driving wildly to the hoop but I felt that in both situations that is the time you want to do that... I think him driving to the basket on either of the two airball attempts involves him making a shot or maybe at least getting fouled.
OH well.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:25 PM ^
Instead of whining about the calls, I will bitch about State fans. As I log onto Facebook, multiple State fans are all on my dick. OMG WHAT A GAME HAHA GO STATE! MICHIGAN SUCKS! Ooh, so annoying. State fans would rather have MSU be better than Michigan than be any good at all.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:27 PM ^
Just be glad you don't have to live in Lansing with all of them.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:34 PM ^
It's still pretty bad in Grand Rapids
January 27th, 2010 at 9:07 AM ^
I agree. Grand Rapids is a MSU haven
January 26th, 2010 at 9:30 PM ^
I saw no ski masks. You know if the thuggery occured in Ann Arbor things would be different. I think our students showed alot of class.
January 26th, 2010 at 9:54 PM ^
We lose to them by one point in the final seconds, so naturally, we "suck."
