Speaking of Harbaugh... if rumors are true then the Eagles might go after John... Would be pretty cool if both Harbaughs coached my two favorite football teams.

...I'd rather see John Harbaugh go coach the New York Football Giants. Would be pretty cool if both Harbaughs coached MY two favorite football teams..

Oregon did just fine in landing top flight skill talent when he was there.
Plus, both of those schools already have coaches. To fire Strong now to hire a Kelly would be controversial.

I believe he got the skill players but I don't believe he was as strong everywhere else.
Should be similar to Harbaugh. Harbaugh did great but was still getting 3* guys in a lot of key positions. Chip Kelly at Texas or USC could be brutal if he's filling up the trenches with 4* guys instead of 3* guys.

Lots of college talk here- but Kelly himself has stated he is staying NFL all the way and NFL teams are interested in him

Kelly at UT would be even more oil & water than strong is. That's a RR/Michigan level misfit.

But keep in mind, a coach has to build relationships with recruits. That takes time. We didn't land that many studs after we hired Harbaugh last winter.

You could well be right, but I'm not sure he can establish that connection in just a few weeks. For 2017 and beyond he'd be tough to compete with.

Four guys that would not make or break this class. You also assume that Kelly could win over four guys in such a short time span or that he could outrecruit Harbaugh.
Oh and we musn't forget mind the negativity UT would draw for firing a well-respected black coach after only two years to hire a recently-fired white coach who was accused of racism with the Eagles.

would go to UT assuming that they did fire Strong to hire Kelly. I think your worrying is needless.

in the black community in Texas and nationally if they fired Strong AFTER saying he was safe.

While I agree with your assessment about their initial PR hit, winning would wash that bad taste right out of their mouth.

or anyone else's community for that matter. I imagine the big money will be pushing for this to happen.
December 29th, 2015 at 9:54 PM ^
Texas will probably give Strong one more year to prove his system and his new coaching hires out while Kelly spends a year in the booth (or on a boat/island) and if Strong does not compete for the Big 12 title, then he is probably gone and Kelly comes in.
Also, Kevin Sumlin can't be on firm ground with his 2 top qbs bolting all of a sudden, so A&M would be a possibility and just imagine Kelly going against Saban, Miles, and Bert.

He probably will, but considering he had another 7 loss year, IMHO UT will not stand for anything close to that next year.

I'd like to think that Kelly versus Muschamp would be funny. 76-2 or something final score.

in the first place? While I agree with your statement on the State of Texas, not so much at UT.

Are you being sarcastic re: Jordan Elliott? The rest of your post would seem to indicate you're not...
So I gotta ask, isn't Elliott not even letting other coaches *talk* to him? How is that wobbly?
December 29th, 2015 at 10:56 PM ^
They just had their president on the road helping recruit assistant coaches, promising Strong would stay. I don't know too much about their president, but UT is a serious academic institution. It's hard to imagine our president going back on his word like that. It's not like Chip Kelly would be their Harbaugh either. He's just a big name coach who's had success at one place. Not a sure fire fit at Texas. I'm sure they think they can get someone like that whenever they want.
Pat Haden looks pretty stupid right now. The five year deal with Helton looked bad enough when it was offered.
If Kelly sits out a year, he'll have plenty of options. His availability will be making some seats hotter. That's a nice situation to be in, probably a lot better than the potential messiness at Texas.
December 29th, 2015 at 7:23 PM ^
But it's the Lions so probably not. I'm more interested in seeing where Kelly ends up.

Wisenhunt is already gone. If he stays in NFL Tennessee makes sense. He also may take a year off.
