In an Amazing Coincidence of Timing, FSU Offers Chase Allen

Submitted by alum96 on

General Jim Sherman 'Baugh is not making friends with his run thru the south (9 of 2016's commits in SEC footprint).  Hours after losing Devin Bush to the yankees (and based on insiders, pretty blindsided by it until last night) FSU decided this afternoon it's time to offer Chase Allen who a week ago had Minnesota (Indiana?) as his best offer.  This follows UM's offer a few days back.  Suddenly he is top 10 material it appears.

Someone got their big boys pants in a bunch today....

Keep in mind this is the same FSU who already has Naseir Upshur.

FSU's 2 TEs combined for a whopping 19 catches last year.

We really need one of you photoshop masters to get Jim's head on a general costume with a map of the southeast up in flames behind him. "We're building an army..."

#1 RB on FSU's board reaches out to a similarly ranked TE target who had previously committed to FSU..."Hey, why did you decommit from FSU, I am committing there tomorrow and want to know if there is anything I am misssing."

Same set of facts, but without maize and blue tinted glasses on.

TLDR, don't know what they said to each other, could mean everything, anything or nothing.

...my money is on you.

EDIT: I guess I was right and it was something like....hay #1 TE, I am the #1 RB and am committing to Michigan tomorrow because...Harbaugh, I hear you like Michigan too, but are leaning to Georgia...I want to let you know where I am going early because I want to play with you...why don't you take another serious look at Michigan...Harbaugh.

This happens all the time. Usually one elite offer triggers the rest of the programs that may have been slow playing him to offer. I am guessing he was on the radar of a lot of schools late, but some of them were waiting to see how their board shook out before offering. I think that is also the reason Michigan waited until the dead period to offer (I think Steve Lorenz had mentioned that).

I thought the same thing at first, but someone pointed out that FSU already has a commit from the same high school, so there's a good chance they've already evaluated Allen. They tried to get Cary Angeline, the USC commit, to take an official visit, but that fell through, so this offer is probably FSU moving down the board.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but FSU might not have Upshur slotted as that Y-tight end position that Allen/Angeline seem to fit. He might be more of a Khalid Hill type of guy for them.

Every school with a similar scheme could do this. Harbaugh is one of, if not the, best evaluators of HS talent. If coaches aren't doing this, what are they relying on? Their inferior scouting skills? Sounds negligent

I know Harbaugh loves him some tight ends. But TE seems like the position of least need for M right now. Bunting has three more years, K. Hill has two, and Wheatley redshirted, plus we have one commit already in both 2016 and 2017. Seems like it's only worth pursuing the very best TE prospects at this point.

It doesn't look like we are getting Nauta or Mathis. I am not sure why the coaches offered Allen, but it does seem like he's the third choice here. To me, that implies the coaches really want another TE in the class. So if Allen goes elsewhere, are they going to find yet another TE prospect to offer? I don't know if Allen is just a guy already. But if they have to go beyond Allen, then they are probably not shopping at the Rob Gronkowski store.
