OT: Kyler Murray leaving Texas A&M, second QB to transfer

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Texas A&M has lost two starting QBs to transfer in the past couple of weeks. This time it's their All-SEC bluechip freshman Kyler Murray.

Texas fans were hoping for him and Zach Gentry last year and came up empty handed.

Some grad transfer is gonna luck out and start from day 1 there. What the hell is going on down there?

A&M has lost 4 QBs to transfer since 2012.

.@TexAgs reports that QB Kyler Murray intends to transfer from Texas A&M. Early favorite to pick him up has to be Texas.

Man I'll pass on Kyler Murrary.  While he may be OK, you unfortunately get his dad as part of the package.  And his dad is apparently the one behind a lot of the in-season drama between Kyler and Kyle.

He'll wind up at some place like Texas Tech or LSU.  I doubt Charlie Strong wants to take that mess of problems on to his sinking ship.

There was a video that leaked of Sumlin getting helped back into his hotel room from a drinking session during a coaches convention.

Obivously he has every right to get shit faced especially during his off time at some convention.

I don't think that is the problem. There are rumors floating around that the NFL is interested in hiring him... On top of that, he promised Kyler Murray's dad that he would start... as it turns out Murray wasn't that much better than Allen so Allen got the nod.

Overbearing parents + fake promises + NFL rumors = transfers.

How could you say that??? Texas A&M is in the SEC and ESPN says the SEC Is better than everything. Even the Star Wars movies. Ok. Maybe not empire or Jedi, but definitely the prequels. And Texas is like Jar Jar Binks these days. So. There.

i find manziel entertaining but that dudes a mess - im sure many watched it / posted about it but i saw footage of manziel autographing $100 bills before his last game and then smashing a tablet on the sideline after tossing a pick.

re kyler murray - that kid can play, some team will obviously get a huge upgrade at QB

and if he doesnt sign the money then it's "Johnny Manziel doesn't sign autograph for fans."  He threw a pick and got pissed at himself.  Aaron Rodgers throws a pick and throws the Surface on the ground and it's passion.  Tom Brady cusses like no one is watching and it's passion.  Johnny Manziel slams it on his head and he's a mess.

Seriously, this is what your gripe is? Get over it.

Kenny Trill- Could he transfer back to A&M and be eligible immediately? Or does just being enrolled at TCU make him ineligible.  I know it sounds dumb to even ask.  But it's an enertaining idea

Both starting QBs left?  I know Sumlin had a meeting with Kyler and his dad, so I guess that did not go well.  Sumlin was an LB at Purdue.  Does Purdue reach out to a former alum to come home if this is it down at A&M?

At some point you have to wonder if Sumlin can even coach, right?  He stepped in at Houston after Art Briles (a guy who turns out is pretty damn good at building programs) and guided a team lead by Houston's best QB since Andre Ware to a solid four year.  Well, a solid three years and a notable 5-7 exception when Keenum suffered an early season ending injury.

He then goes to A&M where he is blessed with a Heisman caliber QB and a line loaded with NFL talent.  He has one great year followed by a good year and a couple meh years despite tremendous recruiting.

It's a pretty fair question at this point.  Can Sumlin coach?  Now, if I'm Purdue and Sumlin gets run out of A&M after next season, I'm taking a shot on him, but it would no longer be a slam dunk.  He could just as easily be Purdue's Ron Zook.

No, you don't have to wonder. He took a 3-star QB and turned him into a Heisman winner who is now failing in the NFL. He took a mediocre Houston program and had two double-digit winning seasons, including a 12-1 year in his fourth season. This isn't Brady Hoke watching a program decline the longer he's in charge. This is a guy who's been 71-32 in his career, who has ups and downs at a program in a powerful conference. Maybe he's not Nick Saban or Urban Meyer, but he can definitely coach.

Oh please.  He did not turn Manziel into a Heisman winner. Anyone that watched him play could tell he had tremendous college QB skills.  He starred as a RS-freshman in his first year in Sumlin's system after sitting behind an NFL first rounder the year before.  It's ridiculous to claim that Sumlin turned Manziel into anything.

He didn't take over a mediocre Houston program.  He took over a program that had been mediocre that Art Briles turned around into a conference champion.  Crediting Sumlin with Houston's success is a little like crediting Miami's last national title to Larry Coker.

If A&M drops to 5-7 next year doesn't his time there look exactly like Brady Hoke's?  Great first year followed by dwindling returns? Check.  Great recruiting rankings that don't seem to manifest itself on the field? Check.  Failing to really be competitive in a tough division? Check.

Sumlin has an admirable record.  He's also stepped into two damn good situations.  It's noticeable that the three years he wasn't blessed with a great college QB his record was 5-7, 8-5, and 8-4.  Not all that great.  It's pretty reasonable to wonder if he's a good head coach.

Well, he didn't play before Sumlin, and he hasn't done anything post-Sumlin. So I would say that SOMEONE helped him become a Heisman winner. But if you don't think that the guy who had Case Keenum throwing for 5,000+ yards a season deserves any credit, then I guess that's up to you.

Art Briles had an overall losing record until late in his fourth year at Houston, which ended up being a 10-4 season. Then he went 8-4 and left for Baylor. That's not exactly a powerhouse of a team. Sumlin had more wins than Briles in one fewer year at Houston.

Also, Texas A&M was not a "damn good" situation. They were 4-8, 6-7, 9-4, and 7-6 in the previous four years.

So...when a QB-dependent system doesn't have a good QB, you have to suffer through 8-5, 8-4, and 5-7 seasons. How terrible! The Cougars fans must have been so disappointed in their historically badass team that suddenly muddled through a 5-7 year. And it's a good thing that someone, like, say, Urban Meyer never had any 8-5 or 9-4 seasons at a powerhouse like Florida.

...wait...what's that? He did? Hmph. I guess we should question whether he's a good coach or not.

Riiiiiiiiiight...so...the head coach had nothing to do with the QB play or the offensive line play. Of the 22 starting positions on offense and defense, we've now eliminated 6 positions from having anything to do with the head coach. Which other positions should we remove entirely from having any association with the head coach?

So let me get this straight, Art Briles' history at Baylor of taking a worse program than Houston and building it into a national powerhouse is no indication of the state he left the Houston program in, but Jonny Manziel's struggles at a different level of football for a shit organization is evidence that he had to be created by someone?  Some logic you have there.  Oh, and by the way, Manziel and Case Keenum both won games on Sunday.  Seems they both might be pretty talented.

You also clearly know nothing about or are just chosing to ignore the state of A&M the last couple years under Sherman.  His last year was an incredible under achievment with a team that started the year in the top 10.  There was tons of talent.  Much like Brady Hoke, anyone stepping into that program in year 1 was going to have a ton of success.

But I guess we should all just accept that you're the ultimate arbiter of college coaching ability.  I mean, you are a high school football coach.  None of us can really speak on your level...

Art Briles did a fine job at Houston and Baylor. That doesn't mean that Kevin Sumlin just rode Briles's coattails and didn't contribute anything in four years. Do you think Houston's program just ran itself on autopilot for four seasons?

Yes, Texas A&M had talent. There's no denying that. Nowhere have you seen me suggest that they lacked talent. But lots of teams have talent that has yet to be recognized. Ohio State was a talented team in 2011, but that didn't stop them from having a mediocre season. BUT THAT'S THE POINT. Ohio State didn't have a competent head coach in 2011 (as well as having other distractions), but they had one in 2010 and another in 2012. Amazingly, the talented players won games when they had good coaches. Coincidence?

Sumlin took that talent, and he actually DID SOMETHING with it. But because the team was "talented", your conclusion is to question whether he can coach? How does that make sense on any level? Isn't the job of a coach to develop talent and to win games? To prove that he can coach, does he have to cut all the talented players and win 12 games with the Little Giants crew?

And, amazingly, you end this here edition of your argument by insinuating that I'm acting like a know-it-all because I'm a coach. Yet you are standing diametrically opposed to my argument, assuming that your argument holds true because...why exactly? I mean, I'm not insisting that I'm right any more than you're insisting that you're right. I haven't said anything in this discussion about me being a coach (until a couple sentences ago).

But I guess we should all just accept that you're the ultimate arbiter of college coaching ability. I mean, you are a guy on the internet. None of us can really speak on your level...

I'm so, so, so sorry that you had to deal with me responding to another poster's question using the terminology that he introduced to the conversation. You must be traumatized. I sure hope your next therapy session can help you sort out all those stressful feelings that are going through your head right now.

In addition to Manziel, Sherman left behind a team that in Sumlin's first year had Christine Michael (#62 overall pick at RB), Ryan Swope (6th round at WR), Luke Joechel (#2 overall pick at T), Mike Evans (#7 overall pick a year later at WR), and Jake Matthews (#6 overall pick a year later at T).

Manziel got all the hype/credit but he played on a ridiculously talented offense, especially in his Heisman season.

Have heard some things on the radio about Murray here in Georgia not exactly abiding by the rules and being a team first guy. Don't know how much stock to put into that. They also were saying despite his actions, he was the preferred choice moving forward. That's why I was expecting Allen to transfer. Maybe Sumlin couldn't reign him in, maybe he didn't want to put up with rules any more? I can't imagine this is going to look good for "quarterback genius" Kevin Summit that his golden boy is a dud in the NFL and the top QB'S in two consecutive years have both transferred.

Yikes.  Please do not transfer to Ohio State.  Please do not transfer to Ohio State.  Please do not transfer to Ohio State.

He's probably gonna go to Texas. Baseball is a factor here.

He's a multi-sport athlete, and you're not gonna get nationally competitive baseball in the Midwest in terms of going to the College World Series.
