OT-Maryland Changes Name of Stadium

Submitted by DCGrad on
The name is now "Maryland Stadium" dropping "Byrd Stadium." I still think it is Capital One Field at Maryland Stadium though. Maybe they will throw in a sponsored by Under Armor tag line tool.

Maryland is keeping it in the family changing the name of their stadium.

Northwestern's stadium was called Dyche Stadium for 70 years before they changed it to Ryan Field in 1997.

Have any other schools done this?

Actually it does...

The state has tremendous pride in its flag as it's one of the most recognizable flags in the country.

They really don't give a shit what we think - and good for them. I lived in Maryland for 6 years and thought it was really cool how much they embraced it.

It's just like Oregon, some things just aren't for everyone.

This was a great thread the first time around... Ugh...

But Maryland Stadium sounds so bland... Don't they have any other famous athletes to name it after?

Marlyand Stadium is probably a little catchier than, say, "Boomer Esiason Park" or  "LaMont Jordan Field" or something along those lines but Maryland does have a few football names that they could use, I suppose. Now, if they wanted to name something after Bobby Ross for giggles, that might be an interesting proposition.

Good thing they decided to remove the naming after a person with a history of supporting racial segregationist policy, and decided to name it instead after a state with a history of supporting racial segragationist policy.
