Been reading up on BYU coaching search since Anderson is involved.  BYU is notoriously tight fisted - they want to spend about $1M on a coach.  (Bronco reportedly made $900K)  The Navy HC makes $1.6M.  Going to have to change their entire matrix on what they want to spend on a coach to grab him.  Same issue with Whittingham who makes $2.6M.  (which is a bargain in this day and age for a top 20 coach)  Fans think Whittingam is completely a pie in sky due to BYU approach to money.

Also with Navy coach you basically tell your potential star freshman QB to shove it - his offense is 180 degrees different than what Mangum does.   Kind of a Mallett situation @ UM.

Yes but again BYU has to change their institutional approach on how much money they are going to dole out to coaches to even land the guy from Navy.  It would probably be a 100% increase from Bronco's salary to land him.  They are not paying P5 wages while trying to be a pseudo independent P5 level program.

I don't know though... there's really no good comparison for BYU out there. We're talking about a job that, in some very real ways, makes you the public face of your entire church. Think of the intense loyalty a Harbaugh has to his alma mater and then think of how ostentatiously religious most football coaches are anyway. Now combine the two... it may well be worth more than $600k a year to a coach like Kenny N.

I think that will be the crux of the interview.  Niumatalolo is a Paul Johnson disciple and that's the offensive system he knows best, he can probably be flexible, but the fit may not be there espoecially as BYU is as wedded to a certain offensive scheme the same way USC and, arguably, Michigan are.  At some point the lizard brain takes over and you go with what you know and that may not be acceptable for BYU.  This isn't like Niumatalolo is a defensive guy and can bring in an air-raid type of OC to resolve the potential conflict.

He also played at Hawaii and has spent the majority of his coaching life at Navy, so the call of the church may not be as strong as for him as many are assuming.

My take, I still think he's first choice after the Whittingham pipe dream, but has to get through the Army-Navy game first.  I also think if BYU still wants him at the end of the interview he goes to BYU.

Still a lot of Domino's left to fall yet.

Teddy Blanks is the same asshole who had a different twitter handle during the coaching search claiming he was friends with Harbaugh's agent David Dunn. Everyhting he said was a complete lie. I'm thoroughly convinced Teddy Blanks isn't even his real name. He steals info from pay sites and spins it off as his own. Not sure how many times it needs to be said but he's not a reliable source of info. If i could punch him in the face right now I would. Guy pisses me off with all his info stealing.

Leak has to lean toward a "yes" response...

Or at least that's what I'm telling myself.

And that "Pruitt no longer interested.." was more about allowing him to save face once he wasn't getting the job.

I am not familiar with Anderson's Stanford defense other than having read here that he plays corners 10 yards off the line & safetys 30.  3-4?  4-3?  Man?  Aggressive?  Bend?

We need an official "A closer look at..."

It was a 3-4 this year.  They lost quite a few starters from the 2014 defense so my cursory glance at Stanford blogs indicates they went conservative.  A lot of "older" starters (only 1 fresh, and I think 8 upperclassmen) but apparently not the greatest upperclassmen.

here is how the 2 stack up the last 4 years, as solo DCs.

Question with Anderson is.... is 2014 or 2015 the anomaly?  Was he sort of living off Mason's work in 2014?  Was this just a wacky year?  Will things return to form in 2016 or is this just how he is the further removed from an elite DC?

    dFEI dS&P+
Mason 2012 3 11
Mason 2013 1 9
Anderson 2014 7 5
Anderson 2015 60 54

They lost a lot of starters but perusing the depth chart had 8 upperclassmen starting this year.    Considering UM is going to lose something like 8 starters on D post 2016, is Stanford 2015 = UM 2017 D?

Forget the numbers, they just weren't any good this season on that side of the ball. Yes, they didn't have the normal playmakers they usually have - but still. There was NO identity.

I liked Mason's defenses, they seemed to be far more aggressive and they felt like a B1G defense. A little unorthodox, but still played the big physical corners, strong LBs that could hold the edge. Solid DL although I always thought that was a weakness - but it could've been scheme to hold up the OL and let the LBs make plays.

I'm not sold on Anderson to be honest. I'm not against him or anything, I just need to do more research...but he doesn't jump off the page and make me overly interested to look into him either.

Well that's what the #s bear out.  In Big 10 terms Stanford had a Nebraska level defense this year after 3 elite years in a row.

Neb was 74/55 for comparison.

We wont know until 2016 if this was a 1 year situation due to hiccup in talent or a new trend due to downgrade in coordinator.  If he stays there that is.  His 2 years are so variant it's difficult to make any judgement on what truly reflects him.  I just hate to see a big downgrade in year 2 - I'd rather have seen the order go the other way (first year mediocre, second year top notch).

But what my point was...forget the numbers, they didn't even look like they had the identity.

For example, we SHIT the bed late in the year on defense. But I could still see what we were trying to do. Our DC was just too stubborn not to adjust when it wasn't working.

Early this season MSU was getting TORCHED, but they still were playing that pressing quarters defense with their CBs and being physical. It was still an MSU defense, just not run as well as it is now (or it has been under Narduzzi).

Bama...even when they got throttled by OSU, it still looked like Bama out there. Big and physical up front. Their secondary was just me, you, Brian and WD out there. It was terrible last year. But it still had that Bama identity.

Stanford...I couldn't tell what they were trying to do this year. It wasn't physical or aggressive. It wasn't that Mattison "keep everything in front and as long as we have a place to stand defense."

It was basically, "don't allow any big plays, but if people want to sustain drives on us and cruise down the field...whatever...as long as we're not on SportsCenter tonight." However, I'm positive that wasn't what they were looking for back in July when they were preparing for the season. But who knows...I've been wrong before.

CC DC: Lance Anderson?

The key guy is Lance Anderson in all of this, above everybody in my opinion,” Harbaugh told The Daily in an interview for the book Rags to Roses last spring. “He is the one consistent thread for six years.” In person, it’s clear that Anderson can get a guy to go to Stanford — and, perhaps more importantly, get the recruit’s parents on board as well. Lance Anderson has the rare talent of making people like him almost instantly. He is smart, he is charismatic and he has a compelling ability to put people at ease; in short, he resembles the archetypal American cool uncle.

Sounds like a great recruiter.
