Fergie Jenkins comes across as a moron.

He should know a thing or two about drug abuse, since he used to be a cokehead.

Perhaps the pitchers to whom McGwire should apologize were juicing as well.

And McGwire can't teach someone to hit because he was a home run hitter? That's fucking ridiculous. Dave Duncan was a catcher, but he's churned out several Cy Young winners as a pitching coach. Charlie Weis never even played college football, but he won a Super Bowl as an offensive coordinator. It's not like every good coach used to be Major League Baseball MVP or even an All-Star. In fact, a lot of the best coaches were very mediocre players.

What a tool.

(By the way, I'm not a fan of McGwire. I really don't care one way or the other. All my childhood favorite baseball players turned out to be douchenozzles, so I really don't care about any of them.)

when a bunch of pitchers were as juiced up as he was? What's he going to say?? "Uhhh...I want to sincerely apologize to all of the pitchers that faced me when I was taking massive amounts of illegal steroids. Well, unless of course you were on them too, in which case I was just leveling the playing field, I guess."

Yeah, great idea.

obviously acting like an idiot. Although it is possible that McGwire has not told the whole truth, he at least has apologized. What have we heard from fellow Cubbie Sammy Sosa? What about Roger Clemens (one of the biggest assholes ever to play the game, next to Curt Schilling)? So McGwire should apologize to all the other steroid users for doing what they were doing? I tell you who should apologize....the commissioners office and the players union, for letting this crap ruin baseball.
Fergie....you are a jag-bag.

Regardless of how you feel about steriod use, and even if no pitcher had ever used PEDs, Jenkins makes a really, really bad argument. The case Jenkins is making is that by taking steriods, McGwire hit a bunch of homeruns and ruined some pitchers' careers. But, presuming steriod use was similar in the American and National Leagues, all pitchers had to face a similar set of juicing hitters. It's not like some poor bastard with a ton of talent and a 7.00 ERA had to face a bunch of 'roid monsters and everyone else got to pitch against Omar Vizquel. I find it highly unlikely that PED use by hitters had a particularly negative effect on any one pitcher's career, at least relative to his cohort. Statistical legacy might be a different issue, but that's not what Jenkins is pointing to.
