OT: Motel 6 Cactus Bowl is an actual thing

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

I wish I was making this up.

Motel 6 Cactus Bowl is new name of bowl game putting Big 12 vs. Pac-12. “We’ll leave the light on”

— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) November 23, 2015

The players better have to stay at Motel 6.

What isn't mentioned is the bowl gifts the comittee gives the players.

A can of Raid for their Motel 6 room, air fresheners for the bathroom and cleanish sheets*.

I didn't know what a Belk was until I looked it up. They have the worst bowl gifts along with the New Era Pinstripe Bowl.

Belk Bowl is a shopping spree at Belk and the Pinstripe is literally New Era hats.

We also have the Marmot Boca Raton Bowl. Marmot is apparently a camping supplies manufacturer.

And the newest bowl game is the Nova Home Loans Arizona Bowl played at UA Stadium. That game isn't even on TV. It will only be broadcast online by something called Campus Insiders.

It used to be called the Meineke bowl and I have taken my kids to that game since my daughter was 3 (she's 13 now).  It's an annual tradition along with a trip to Ann Arbor for a game each year.  It's a well run bowl with lots of cool activities for kids in the hours before the game.

And isn't just called the 'Motel 6 Bowl' like the Belk Bowl or some others like that.

Other than having a lame sponsor, the Cactus Bowl is actually a good bowl name I think.

I'd love to see them reduce the number of bowl games so there wouldn't be room for teams with less than a 7-5 record, preferably 8-4. If not, I would love to see a college football NIT or maybe several mini tournaments similar to what happens at the beginning of the college basketball season to replace some of the lesser bowl games. I know, I know, the logistics would be messy, but if you played the first round of a four-team tournament at home, a lot of teams would jump at the chance, then have the winners play in the bowl game in San Diego or wherever. More games, more money for the schools, and would make the bowl games more meaningful IMO.

I will probably watch some of this just to see if I can hear the color commentary being done with Tom Bodett's voice, which would definitely make things interesting, if nothing else. Still, I have to wonder if Knights Inn or Red Roof feel a bit shorted that they couldn't get in on some of the bowl action - there is always the next round in a few years, when a few more are created, eh?

I don't agree with the argument "more football is better for fans, therefore we should be fine with extra bowl games." For one thing, the fans could get more football by having an eight or sixteen team playoff. For another, the fans could get more football by playing a longer regular season. My point is that adding quantity doesn't absolutely have to mean reducing quality.

I will forever hold a grudge against Motel6 for charging $200 a night the weekend of the game two years ago. I will also never forgive myself for paying that and not just sleeping on a park bench in the arb.

Sponsors are what make all these bowls possible and keep college football on throughout the holiday season so I'm not opposed to that..

I just wish they would stop calling the bowl by the sponsor's name. Instead of the Motel 6 Catcus Bowl, why don't they call it The Cactus Bowl (brought to you by Motel 6)

The Motel 6 Bed Bug Bowl, or M6B3.

That would be more fitting for the sponsor.

I get bored watching Michigan play in lesser bowls. There's no way I'm spending my holiday watching New Mexico play UCONN. Sorry.

Great Cause.  Great Name. Great Theme song.  What more could you ask for?  Maybe they could sponser the Motor City Bowl as an alternative.

They also moved the game from Sun Devil Stadium to Chase Field.  I know Sun Devil Stadium is currently being renovated, but I'm not sure if that's why they moved it or not.  It was freezing balls here last year during the BW3/Cactus Bowl, and it was about 35-45 degrees from kick off to car lot,.  It seems to be the "West" Pole here this year too.  It was 38 degrees when I went for my run this morning....(I know cry you a river lol)  I think Chase Field has a closeable roof though.
