Majority opinion always gets rewards

Submitted by wolverine1987 on

2001's unhinged raving gave me an idea--maybe there is truth to his claim that the majority opinion gets rewarded with all kinds of mgopoints. This is in addition to the hot chicks, free beer, and private invitations to Brian's Algonquin Round Table lunches at Red Hawk (to those of you lower than 250 points, this is where we get together and discuss how to further reinforce our single POV) that we already receive of course. So here goes, get ready for consensus opinion, feel free to reward me with mgopoints beyond the dreams of lesser men:

I like Rich Rodriguez. He always does a good job.

Those who have little mgopoints are necessary to support those of us who have many.

I like chocolate.

Thank you.

The MGoPoint system does contribute to a good amount of "groupthink". But, because it is effective in eliminating trolls and improving the overall quality of posting, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

OK, but this time in pretentious code so that only the incrowd knows what I'm saying:

Tu n'obtenes pas de points en ayant une opinion majoritaire. Tu obtenes des points en chapardage pour eux.

Nie dostaniesz punkty, które z opinią większości. Otrzymujesz punkty przepłukiwania im.

This post has been brought to you by Google Translate. Please don't neg me if the Polish is actually Mr. Personal Attack talking.

Yes there is a "system" here on the blog.

No it is not unfair.

Look I think Brian/mods do a good job of allowing people their freedom of speech. This is why the ability to post is 20pts and not 1000pts.

But there has to be some self moderation and censorship. People think that they can just create accounts and post right away what their thoughts are. Whether it is with/against the general opinion, it can be considered trolling.

Is the system perfect? No, but it's better than nothing.

I see I missed out on all of the fun early this morning...

First off....enough of this Vast Mgoblog Conspiracy. We don't hold meetings(aside from the WLA), we haven't created a manifesto or an Mgoblog platform by which all posters opinions are judged as being in accordance with or dissenting of.

There are plenty of debates/thoughtful discussions that take place on here all the time. Try reading a diary every once and awhile. Most of the better discussion takes place there.

This board is one part discussion one part conversation. The Mgoblog community has been that way dating back to the days of halo scan (especially in the days of halo scan). You don't have to participate in the conversational dynamic of the board, but as with all social communities (work, friends, family) people just like to goof around. No one likes to spend every day at work with someone who only likes to talk about work. Providing analysis is good, but we're not all freaking robots.

It would be one thing if you provided this blog with some analysis, but you really don't even do that. You're all about speculation and conjecture. Posting a depth chart about probable starters or making a thread about probable recruits is first of all redundant because it has been beaten to death, and second of all doesn't come close to anything resembling analysis.

Analysis would be if you were to, first of all, (and this is the big one) do some research! Shocking! Research! Look up a few statistics that you think are interesting and use them to build a case as to why you think X or Y happened. Compare them with past seasons and provide a thought provoking piece of work back up by hard evidence.

There is no "hive mind" and no Vast Mgoconspiracy here. You are free to have whatever opinions you like, sometimes you may get a +1, even though you're wrong, and sometimes you may get a -1, even if you're right. Life in a nutshell.

I've been around these parts for many a year and from what I've learned the only things you need to do to be successful here are...

1. Provide some insight.

2. Don't be retarded.

3. Don't be annoying.

4. Don't be overly antagonistic (and if you feel you have to be, have a sense of humor about it).

5. Provide some insight!

and lastly but maybe most importantly...

6. Don't hop on board the Mgomeltdown express.

Sure there are a lot of people who don't ever provide any insight and just drop a few one liners every now and again, but just as you wish to participate exclusively in the content side of the mogocommunity, some only wish to partake in the conversational branch. Respect them and they will respect you.

It's going to take some time to detach yourself from the stigma of your past but other posters have accomplished this feat by realizing what it was they were doing that was causing them to receive a negative reaction and working to fix it. That is not conforming, it's being self aware.

Good luck em0.

Though, I immediately knew the contents of a thread titled "To whom it may concern" and having 150+ responses.

Its cool though, I'm sure the boom/bust cycle will continue. Somewhere out there, there's a fresh account just waiting to discuss our chances with recruits and which recruits will make an impact on the depth chart.
