Top rival in basketball?
this broke out in another thread, and it isn't an official discussion unless it's a sanctioned DISCUSS thread. Plus, this will get more thoughts.
Who is Michigan's top rival in basketball? Some in the thread mentioned say OSU, many others say MSU, and others say Indiana.
i say it's obviously indiana. Long, bad blood history between the two teams. Our struggles at Assembly Call and the fact that the teams both played for a national championship once put it over the top.

I'm actually surprised that a fair number of people disagree with this. Not saying they're wrong. I'm wondering myself now. But I thought it was a given that MSU was our biggest basketball rival.
Hm.

We seem to be avoiding Oakland. Coincidence?

It's ALWAYS been
MSU
OSU
#3 is debatable (Indiana? *Duke even though we rarely play them?)
Football has ALWAYS been
1. OSU
2, MSU
3, ND
...it's only the Dantonio era that MSU has closed on MSU, but these young folks forget just a decade before, MSU wasn't even close to our level (hence little brother...it used to be the Big 2 and little 8 (or 9))
November 24th, 2015 at 11:17 AM ^
Sparty only got bumped up to #2 because ND isn't on the schedule anymore.
November 24th, 2015 at 12:16 PM ^
Completely agree. In football its
1. OSU
2. ND
3. MSU
And when ND is back on the schedule after this Brandon induced hiatus, everyone will remember why.

OSU in football, MSU in all other sports

OSU is still our biggest overall rival because football

I got soooooooo much more joy out of beating that shithead Crean a year removed from when they stole a title from us.
Just watching IU leaving the court--a bubble team that wouldn't even make the NIT that year-- with Maize and Blue confetti coming down was sweetness.
I'll remember that 2013-14 season forever. 15-3 against the toughest conference in the country.

They got run by North Florida in their season opener, 93-81.
They lost to UT-Chattanooga 81-77 on Saturday.
They beat Chicago State tonight on a last-second buzzer beater.
Not great, Bob.

North Florida is actually a good team

Where does this ''OSU doesn't give a fuck about basketball'' thing come from? They are top ten in attendance in basketball every year and they have like 3 final fours in the last ten years.

MSU in basketball.
Indiana is not a rival. It's not a rivalry when they've won nearly twice as many games. And if you asked them they would say exactly that.

If you asked a lot of people in the mid 2000s they would say no
November 23rd, 2015 at 11:15 PM ^
They would be wrong. A rivalry being non-competitive for 10ish years does not make it no longer a rivaly. They're the other big in-state school. They'll be our rival in everything, always and forever, and a worthy one at that.

It would be like in football how illinois considers michigan a rival, but we don't. I am sure indiana fans don't consider us a rival.
November 24th, 2015 at 12:25 AM ^
a rival either. It's MSU first in bball, then OSU. That's the list of enduring basketball rivals. Duke was for short time, Wisconsin has been irritating the past few years but those weren't/aren't sustaining.

being the main BB rival for Michigan, we did play in an NCAA final after all, but not since then
