Do you shut down after a loss?

Submitted by Winchester Wolverine on
I have an entire day devoted to football this Saturday, complete with pizza, beer, mgofellowship, etc. With the excitement of arguably the most important football weekend in years building, I came to a realization. I'm not one to continue watching college football if we lose. In fact, I eradicate anything sports for a few days until after the fallout has cleared. I guess you could say I'm a bit of a sore loser. So what have you, mgocommunity? Will you watch our most hated rivals play each other even if we lose? Or any other teams for that matter?

I am known to rage after a loss, but I get all the feelings out pretty fast. Try not to let it ruin my Sundays. Last year, the day after the Notre Dame shut out, my then 4 year old son asked "mommy, why is daddy so mad today?" Also something I am not proud of is I killed an entire bottle of Booker Noe that night. Kind of a moment of truth that weekend.

I tried to avoid any highlights for about a day after that ending. I also avoided my msu fan roommates after I got home. Luckily, I had a good 2 hours of thought on the drive home to think it through and be pretty alright with it. I had a strong urge to tell my party friends about how badly the refs screwed Michigan, but I just held it back. Didn't wanna sound too bitter. Thats the worst I've felt about a loss in a while, and usually I just move on after a loss.

Same here. I went off the grid for at least a week, may have been longer but I lost track of time. When my kids were little they learned not to mess with me on Michigan Saturdays and how to avoid me if we lost. I'm surprised the wife let me get away with that.

BTW I've still never seen Crosby lift the cup. I've seen photos but not video. I will not watch the Stewart pass either. I'll do all I can to avoid ever seeing the last play against spartie.

I thought that might come as somewhat offensive. "Shutting down" is different than "ruining my life" though. It's more like realizing that your mind needs to temporarily refocus on things that are either more important or don't make you want to throw up.

Either way, I didn't shut down after the msu game. It's the same with winning. I don't walk around beating my chest for days like I've done something. I do understand those that fall apart after a loss, I use to be that way when I was 25, now I just don't waste the energy on it. Plus living in Ohio will do that to you.

Not really, it's just a game, I haven't let it ruin my weekends since college.

With the exception of the msu game. that was the first time in my life I felt viscerally affected by a game.

That's just the thing . . . it doesn't have 0 impact.  It has a tangible impact on my life.

I've had people I have not talked to for years call me out of the blue when Michigan wins big (or loses big).  I've had interviews change tone because they see Michigan on my resume.

I became friends with the boss of my boss because he liked to talk Michigan basketball with me, a lowly underling.  His son played AAUs with MAAR in Allentown PA, and told me about him before Beilein even knew about him.

You completely missed the point of the analogy.  The point is not that some things have an impact and other things don't.  The point is that things can have deeper meaning than the form in which it exists.  The Bible exists as a book.  But can you see that it means more than just a book to many people?  Now you're going to tell me that football and the Bible are different things.

The last few years force one to put things in perspective. I'm guessing the more competitive we get..the harder the losses will get.

Yes, get used to it.  The time will come again when expectations will be sky high and one loss will ruin the whole season.  You will live and die on every single play.

November will be intense.  When you have already had 4 losses, a potential 5th loss is "whatever".  But when you've had no losses or just an early OOC loss, it's a whole different animal.

I was fine after the Utah loss itself because of how they tried to finish the game.  It was after the pick six that I was upset thinking "Oh no, I am not doing another year of Pseudo Ghost Gardner in wait".  With that loss I felt like the Team did not give up just like how Bo never lost he just ran out of time.

I totally shut off all sports. I'm a whiny bitch when Michigan loses. It ruins my weekend and much of the following week. The exception to this was much of the past decade or so, when I was able to engage in some serious psychological gymnastics to convince myself I didn't care.

How do I +1 this comment?

I'm the same way and it only seems to get worse as I get older.  But, as I think about it, part of my need to disengage stems from the fact that social media now keeps throwing losses back in my face.

It sucks to lose. It double-sucks to have your whole twitter feed filled with reminders about how much the sucking sucks.  Couple that with twelve channels of football scrolling scores and plugging in highlights of the sucking and I find that if i don't power down the phone and turn the TV off, I can't handle it.

Yes, I have a problem.  But, to be fair, if I perform an honest self-evaluation, this is my one emotional outlet where I can revert to being a 12 year old...so, there's that.

Well, usually after a loss, I am petrified and can't move
Awake but cannot open my eyes
And the weight is crushing down on my lungs I know I can't breathe
And hope someone will save me this time
And my mother's still calling me insane and high
Swearing it's different this time
And I tell her to give in to the demons that possess her
And that God never blessed her insides
Then I hang up the phone and feel badly for upsetting things
And crawl back into bed to dream of a time
When my heart was open wide and I loved things just because
Like the sick and the dying.

But then sometimes when you're on...

Couldn't pay me to watch the MSU OSU game. Cmon meteor!

After an egregiously bad loss like MSU I completely shutdown. Especially if it's a night game I usually just go straight to bed. I wake up typically at 4am on Saturdays for work so I'm tired and drunk anyway.

The Last 6-7 years has taught me to let losses roll off my back though for the most part.

Depends. Like last year, no because I never had any expectations or hope in the first place. I actually paid more attention waiting for Brandon to get fired. Otherwise, usually yes after heartbreaking or unexpected loses. I won't watch MSU/OSU if UM loses.
