Do you shut down after a loss?
November 19th, 2015 at 6:33 PM ^
Yes. I can't breathe, my internal organs start to fail and I lose feeling in my extremities. Also, I get drunk.
November 19th, 2015 at 7:02 PM ^
But it all starts with the drinking.
November 20th, 2015 at 10:13 AM ^
I don't know what your talking about, what is a loss??
November 19th, 2015 at 6:35 PM ^
I get pissed and yell at my wife and kids for everything
November 19th, 2015 at 9:39 PM ^
This is the correct way to handle M football. Forgot the dog. Gotta yell at the dog too.

I am known to rage after a loss, but I get all the feelings out pretty fast. Try not to let it ruin my Sundays. Last year, the day after the Notre Dame shut out, my then 4 year old son asked "mommy, why is daddy so mad today?" Also something I am not proud of is I killed an entire bottle of Booker Noe that night. Kind of a moment of truth that weekend.
November 19th, 2015 at 7:00 PM ^
I used to, but the eight years of self-destruction (I count 2007 as the first year) got me so used to it that I don't get nearly as pissed as I used to.
November 19th, 2015 at 7:20 PM ^
I agree. These years (especially last year) broke me.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:37 PM ^
Yeah it kills my mood for football for a few days.

After the MSU loss, I literally shut down all sports-related content for at least a week. I saw "the play" live, then not again until a few days ago. That is a fact...
November 19th, 2015 at 7:03 PM ^
Yup and a boycott of any highlight related sports station

I tried to watch another CFB game, then switched over to hockey... still couldn't do it. It was a solid week until anything sports-related happened on my TV. I don't think I even checked my fantasy teams.
November 19th, 2015 at 7:23 PM ^
This may have been the most heartbreaking loss I can personally remember. Maybe the MSU game with Smoker and Spartin Bob...I remember feeling lousy for days after that one.
November 19th, 2015 at 8:40 PM ^
I tried to avoid any highlights for about a day after that ending. I also avoided my msu fan roommates after I got home. Luckily, I had a good 2 hours of thought on the drive home to think it through and be pretty alright with it. I had a strong urge to tell my party friends about how badly the refs screwed Michigan, but I just held it back. Didn't wanna sound too bitter. Thats the worst I've felt about a loss in a while, and usually I just move on after a loss.
November 20th, 2015 at 10:45 AM ^
Same here. I went off the grid for at least a week, may have been longer but I lost track of time. When my kids were little they learned not to mess with me on Michigan Saturdays and how to avoid me if we lost. I'm surprised the wife let me get away with that.
BTW I've still never seen Crosby lift the cup. I've seen photos but not video. I will not watch the Stewart pass either. I'll do all I can to avoid ever seeing the last play against spartie.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:38 PM ^
if you still shut down after a loss after the last ten years, you may want to take a step back and find a hobby.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:43 PM ^
If you didn't shut down after the Sparty loss then I say you're a troll.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:44 PM ^
Call me a troll then. The loss sucked but I refuse to let a game that I have nothing to do with ruin my life.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:52 PM ^
I thought that might come as somewhat offensive. "Shutting down" is different than "ruining my life" though. It's more like realizing that your mind needs to temporarily refocus on things that are either more important or don't make you want to throw up.
November 19th, 2015 at 7:50 PM ^
Either way, I didn't shut down after the msu game. It's the same with winning. I don't walk around beating my chest for days like I've done something. I do understand those that fall apart after a loss, I use to be that way when I was 25, now I just don't waste the energy on it. Plus living in Ohio will do that to you.
November 20th, 2015 at 9:41 AM ^
Good for you `
November 19th, 2015 at 6:39 PM ^
2012 ohio state was the angriest ive ever been after a game. Since then I've taken a step back.
November 19th, 2015 at 7:22 PM ^
That game messed me up for a couple of days. For some reason the '13 & '14 ohio state games didn't have nearly the same effect. (probably because of our steady decline)
November 19th, 2015 at 10:15 PM ^
By the 2014 Game, I think everyone was numb.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:39 PM ^
Not really, it's just a game, I haven't let it ruin my weekends since college.
With the exception of the msu game. that was the first time in my life I felt viscerally affected by a game.

Yea, it's just a game. Like the way my son is just a person and my home is just a slab of concrete. Funny that most of us feel such a strong connection to just a "game".
November 19th, 2015 at 7:29 PM ^
At the end of the day, it has absolutely 0 direct impact on your life (unlike the other two analogies). It's a very fun hobby and way to connect with others, but yea it's still just a game

November 19th, 2015 at 8:25 PM ^
That's just the thing . . . it doesn't have 0 impact. It has a tangible impact on my life.
I've had people I have not talked to for years call me out of the blue when Michigan wins big (or loses big). I've had interviews change tone because they see Michigan on my resume.
I became friends with the boss of my boss because he liked to talk Michigan basketball with me, a lowly underling. His son played AAUs with MAAR in Allentown PA, and told me about him before Beilein even knew about him.
November 19th, 2015 at 8:35 PM ^
You completely missed the point of the analogy. The point is not that some things have an impact and other things don't. The point is that things can have deeper meaning than the form in which it exists. The Bible exists as a book. But can you see that it means more than just a book to many people? Now you're going to tell me that football and the Bible are different things.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:39 PM ^
The last few years force one to put things in perspective. I'm guessing the more competitive we get..the harder the losses will get.

Yes, get used to it. The time will come again when expectations will be sky high and one loss will ruin the whole season. You will live and die on every single play.
November will be intense. When you have already had 4 losses, a potential 5th loss is "whatever". But when you've had no losses or just an early OOC loss, it's a whole different animal.
November 19th, 2015 at 10:29 PM ^
This year has been really nice but man I get mad even more now it seems. The MSU game, the long throw to the one yard line vs Minny. Then about three or four times in the Indiana game.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:39 PM ^
win or lose.
their time, glad i'm with them, and if we lose it will definitely take my mind off of it.
hoping for signif snow on saturday up here too.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:39 PM ^
... on the nature of the loss, the people I'm with, and exactly how drunk I managed to get while watching the game.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:40 PM ^
I didn't after the Utah game, but sure as hell did after the other. Alcohol in mass quantity was the only answer there.
November 19th, 2015 at 8:33 PM ^
I was more or less fine after Utah. After that... other loss, I sat in silenty in a darkened room with the TV off after the game for roughly and 45 minutes. Just sat there.
November 20th, 2015 at 7:36 AM ^
I was fine after the Utah loss itself because of how they tried to finish the game. It was after the pick six that I was upset thinking "Oh no, I am not doing another year of Pseudo Ghost Gardner in wait". With that loss I felt like the Team did not give up just like how Bo never lost he just ran out of time.
November 20th, 2015 at 7:37 AM ^
The MSU loss resulted in sheer denial. For about 30 hours I seriously thought there was some way to reverse what happened.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:40 PM ^
Typically no, but I was questioning my fandom after the MSU game. Worst I think I've ever felt after a loss.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:42 PM ^
I totally shut off all sports. I'm a whiny bitch when Michigan loses. It ruins my weekend and much of the following week. The exception to this was much of the past decade or so, when I was able to engage in some serious psychological gymnastics to convince myself I didn't care.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:58 PM ^
How do I +1 this comment?
I'm the same way and it only seems to get worse as I get older. But, as I think about it, part of my need to disengage stems from the fact that social media now keeps throwing losses back in my face.
It sucks to lose. It double-sucks to have your whole twitter feed filled with reminders about how much the sucking sucks. Couple that with twelve channels of football scrolling scores and plugging in highlights of the sucking and I find that if i don't power down the phone and turn the TV off, I can't handle it.
Yes, I have a problem. But, to be fair, if I perform an honest self-evaluation, this is my one emotional outlet where I can revert to being a 12 year old...so, there's that.
November 19th, 2015 at 7:45 PM ^
"How do I +1 this comment?"
You hit the little green arrow / half triangle thing.

I wonder if Victor Hale II knows he's taking zh2oson's upvote virginity. Let's have a moment of silence.

Voting is actually fun. Why have I waited so long to get enough points to do this?
November 19th, 2015 at 6:42 PM ^
And now that we're good again...it's gotten worse than it's ever been. I'm truly concerned to be honest, I've got issues.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:43 PM ^
Well, usually after a loss, I am petrified and can't move
Awake but cannot open my eyes
And the weight is crushing down on my lungs I know I can't breathe
And hope someone will save me this time
And my mother's still calling me insane and high
Swearing it's different this time
And I tell her to give in to the demons that possess her
And that God never blessed her insides
Then I hang up the phone and feel badly for upsetting things
And crawl back into bed to dream of a time
When my heart was open wide and I loved things just because
Like the sick and the dying.
But then sometimes when you're on...
November 19th, 2015 at 6:43 PM ^
Couldn't pay me to watch the MSU OSU game. Cmon meteor!
After an egregiously bad loss like MSU I completely shutdown. Especially if it's a night game I usually just go straight to bed. I wake up typically at 4am on Saturdays for work so I'm tired and drunk anyway.
The Last 6-7 years has taught me to let losses roll off my back though for the most part.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:43 PM ^
Ohio State game sent me into deep depression and a hatred af all things Sparty.
November 19th, 2015 at 6:43 PM ^
Depends. Like last year, no because I never had any expectations or hope in the first place. I actually paid more attention waiting for Brandon to get fired. Otherwise, usually yes after heartbreaking or unexpected loses. I won't watch MSU/OSU if UM loses.
