Devin still might be able to EE!!!!!!!
"Ten minutes ago Michigan received a fax that Devin has completed his high school requirements," Inkster coach Will McMichael told us. "He has to get through [Michigan's] admissions, but there's still a possibility [for early enrollment]."
Now, Michigan's admissions and the NCAA had previously cleared Gardner for early enrollment, but Inkster High had not graduated him. Now that they are graduating him, can Michigan still get him into classes? The answer is that there is still a shot of that happening... but a final answer on that may not come until later this weekend. We'll let you know as soon as we know.

that you did
or ...
I understood what that meant

Actually Devin Gardner telling us how he felt after he found out there still is a chance. You still have a right to feel disturbed though.

The last day to register for classes is Monday and he's already admitted if i'm not mistaken. This is very good news!
January 15th, 2010 at 8:15 PM ^
Crap! think of all the schoolwork he has to catch up on.
January 15th, 2010 at 4:21 PM ^
It would be nice to have him around for Spring practice.
January 15th, 2010 at 4:26 PM ^
This is some good news to start the weekend.
This kid is hell-bent on starting his UM career. I can't imagine how stressful it'd be sneaking into college last minute (aside from being a highly-touted student athlete) right before the winter semester enrollment deadline. Best of luck, Devin.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:08 PM ^
Yeah - my only concern is about his academics. Not necessarily that he can't hack it in the classroom, but that he's starting out in college (a big enough transition in itself) and has missed some class time off the bat.
January 16th, 2010 at 11:05 AM ^
and I cannot imagine, given that, what Inkster was thinking. But the only issue, if this report is accurate, and if M "readmits" him, then I assure you there will be enough study table and personal tutoring to make sure he makes the grade. From what I understand, he's a pretty intelligent kid, too.

This is the best news I've heard in quite some time
January 15th, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
then that would be great especially when he gets a real chance to beat out tate or even make tate a better player knowing he has devin & denard on his behind
January 15th, 2010 at 5:46 PM ^
I think you have a better chance of Tate playing better because of Devin. Devin will not beat out Tate. And if he does, we are in trouble. I am so excited about Gardner, but I don't like the idea of yet another freshmen QB running our offense. The main thing we are lacking on offense is experience, and Tate has one year under his belt. Gardner is raw, and he has alot to work on. In a perfect word, he redshirts and starts his sophmore year.
January 15th, 2010 at 7:31 PM ^
I may be alone, but I was at peace with him not enrolling early, getting a redshirt, and having time to develop properly so he can be stud QB for us in a couple of years.
For 3 years we have been having only freshmen and walk-on's at QB for our biggest games like OSU. It is time for some sane, orderly QB development.
January 15th, 2010 at 7:48 PM ^
I completely agree with you. If there is one player that needs to EE the least, it's DG, since I truly hope he redshirts this year. First of all, if at any point he's our best QB option, we're in trouble. Secondly, I want 2 years of DG after Tate graduates.
Young QB's can succeed in college, but rarely do they play to the level of their upperclassmen counterparts. Let DG watch Tate and Denard this year, learn the playbook, learn to throw, and get in great shape. He can then play sporadically while Tate is an upperclassman and take over the position as a RS Junior. He will have some game experience, 3 years learning the offense, and just as importantly, 2 years to start. This is the ideal progression in my mind, and DG enrolling early helps this negligibly at best.
January 15th, 2010 at 8:32 PM ^
fact that we dont really have a viable backup. Robinson can get better and I am a huge fan and hope he does get better as a QB. But we dont really know if he will make those strides going into next year. We need Gardner to EE to get the reps and hope one of them can be a solid backup becuase odds are we will need them at some point.
I do hope he redshirts and I do hope Robinson makes strides as a QB. But I think we need him to get in early and get all the reps and practice time he can.
January 15th, 2010 at 9:06 PM ^
This is probably the best explanation I've seen regarding the importance of Devin enrolling early.
I still hope that Tate and Denard are more successful next season due to their first year of experience and have DG reshirt, but in the event that Denard does not make those strides it would be that much more beneficial for DG to have the extra time in practice.
January 15th, 2010 at 10:51 PM ^
But we all should hope like hell that he redshirts. I think Denard will be a solid backup and change of pace with a year of experience. Time will tell.
January 15th, 2010 at 11:17 PM ^
Having a viable passing threat in reserve makes it easier for me to sleep at night, although a redshirt year is the optimum.
And after seeing how elusive the truly effective DE-read-handoff/fake-handoff is (compare Forcier to "Juice" Williams/Mazoli), and how pivotal it is to the RR offense, it's good to give all QB recruits all the time possible to master this delicate conjuring trick before putting them in play.
January 16th, 2010 at 12:40 AM ^
"if at any point he's our best QB option we are in trouble" Not so sure this is a bad thing.
1. didn't Colt almost set a record for wins as a QB starter? only way that couls happen is if he was starting as a freshman.
2. and probably most important, if Tate is only going to improve as a QB in his 2nd yr and Devin beats him out in great competition isn't that a "good" thing?
in a perfect football world yes he redshirts waits 2yrs behind Tate and then dominates the big10 for 2-3yrs, but if he beats Tate in yr 1 then i see it as a positive.
January 16th, 2010 at 11:01 AM ^
If at any point Devin is our 2nd best quarterback and there is an injury, RR and I, for two, want him available. I want to enjoy a winning season. RR wants to keep his job. Not to mention the sentiments referred to about the level of competition resulting in better players in general.

If this were USC or OSU Devin would already be picking out an Escalade.
January 15th, 2010 at 4:36 PM ^
...but that would be listed as a 'course requirement'.
January 15th, 2010 at 4:41 PM ^
OSU takes offense to that: he would be picking out his Corvette there.

The IROC Z course has a prerequisite at OSU, Intro Buck 'Stache 101. If you've been a life-long OSU fan though I do believe they waive this requisite for some reason...
January 16th, 2010 at 12:54 AM ^
i bet that car is worth a lot of money! the IROC Z is a chevy while the Trans Am is the pontiac cousin. but i guess who cares i just drank too much beer and decided to be anal about car models instead of making a decent try at actually commenting on the posts topic.
January 15th, 2010 at 4:56 PM ^
...but since he's going to UM, he can just borrow Kevin Grady's Escalade instead.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:00 PM ^
If Gardner enrolls early, nothing you can say will affect our good mood.
January 15th, 2010 at 5:27 PM ^
...but given the Grady household income, said Escalade is not of questionable provenance.
Better comeback: he could borrow Mo Taylor's Ford Explorer.

It would be nice to have some viable depth at QB this year. I am with the group here that wants to see him redshirt, but I could imagine him doing the Tim Tebow as a freshman routine near the goal line if he plays. As a poster noted, he has a lot more bulk to throw around than Tate or Denard.
January 16th, 2010 at 11:46 AM ^
He will never be in a near-the-goaline Tim Tebow package in his career. He is not a physical player, he's a player who wants to be in the open field.
