Basketball Open Thread

Submitted by bouje on

Less than 30 minutes until kickoff. Figured I'd start a thread. Predictions?

I'll say Michigan is up and down all night but somehow pulls off a nail biter.

MOD edit, anyone unable to watch, here ya go

I dont believe they kickoff in basketball, perhaps tipoff?

My prediction, I expect Indiana to win by 8 unfortunately.

And I was hoping that we'd go to the tourney again and even get to the sweet 16 with this team. And I was also hoping for a deep run to the Frozen Four for hockey...

I feel like this:

I caught part of an episode of your show, and I literally saw this guy walking down the boardwalk with his girlfriend and then spontaneously get into a fight with this other guy and his girlfriend who were taunting Jersey Shore guy/gal combo.

So they start fighting on the boardwalk, the girls are all up in it and then it cuts to this guy in a white tank top on a couch calling a bunch of girls he may or may not know to "come drink with him". Said guy then gets a frantic phone call from a girl describing that his buddy is in a fight on the boardwalk! Oh noes! So he quickly puts on his basketball high tops, (but not a shirt?) and presumably goes to his friend's rescue. Thank God it went to commercial because I don't think I could watch anymore after that.

Seriously?

We might be the better of two very poor ball teams on that court tonight. I'm not sure anything is going to stop the bleeding this year in the major sports. The bigger question is what are we going to look like in basketball next year with Harris and Sims gone? OUCH

This game is absolutely hideous. Let's give both team a loss and just end it at halftime so we can all watch Jersey Shore....

Kidding, but ugh what an ugly game.

As bad as it is for my health, I'd rather Harris experience a couple more games like this, be told by the scouts that he won't be drafted, and return next year. Right now, it is hard to watch him or LLP with the ball because they look lost out there. I'm just hoping the team can make it to the NIT finals so that I can see them in NYC.

Ugh, that hurt to write that.

Watching this team is almost as bad as when Brian Ellerbe was the coach...I'm all about having continuity with the basketball program, but I'm not sure Beilein is the right coach. If Manny Harris leaves like most of us expect, we may score 40 points a game next year. Honestly, if Trey Zeigler doesn't sign, we have nobody next year. I know Dave Brandon will be new on the job but I can't believe he will stand for watching a team similiar to "Hoosiers" out on the basketball floor. Crisler arena, next year will be lucky to have the lower bowl filled. I know Beilein has had success in his previous jobs, and I support him, but honestly, he needs to step up and recruit players. I'm all about these white guys sharp shooters from the State of Indiana, but if you don't have a big man in the middle, and a supporting cast, these Stu Douglass, and Zach Novak types will never get you past the NIT. Watching tonights game is bad enough, imagine it without Manny and Sims? Next year is going to be brutal.....

Ok. Serious question. I know Manny has NBA talent and will likely go to the NBA. He is putting up pretty good numbers this year. All the scouts last year told him he needed to improve his mid-range game and his 3-pt shot. Has he really improved either? Has he improved his draft stock at all? Don't get me wrong. I love Manny. He's got serious game. However, I still think, at this point in the season, he could maybe benefit from another year. I just don't think his draft stock or arsenal of skills has improved that much, if at all from last year. What do you guys think?

I'm no scout, but his jumpshot is nowhere near NBA ready. It looks like he's improved his release point a lot from last year, but he's still badly off balance on most of his shots - like the wide open catch-and-shoot look he had in the first half tonight when he still kicked his legs out. You don't have to be a deadly shooter to make it in the league, but Manny's not a particularly strong defender, either, and overall I just don't see him sniffing an NBA rotation, and probably not a roster, next year.

EDIT: I really hope I'm wrong, even if it means him collecting checks next year.

I've seen pickup games at the CCRB with better offensive execution than I've seen tonight from either team. Michigan's lack of a point guard to initiate the offense is glaring.

Anyone else just see Sims pretty much shove Vogrich after he missed that lay-up? That's not what a freshman needs. Even if he was in the way...come on. Obviously I don't know and can't really speculate, but it really seems like they're missing Lee and Merritt from a leadership perspective this season.
