Why in hell would he do that? He's not stupid.

Michigan is an attractive job with great management. Detroit suffers from horrible management

I mean, the Lions got to the playoffs with two clueless coaching staffs since 0-16. Just imagine what they would do with someone who knows what they are doing/isn't crazy.

People forget about that. But I've seen those Lions teams win in Dallas and beat the stuffing out of San Francisco. Plus they do have the only playoff win in the Super Bowl era.
Bobby Ross did the Lions no favors though. He clashed with Barry which helped make his retirement easier. I love Barry, but still think he retired in a soft way by faxing in his retirement. I thought his teammates deserved better.

lol no.
Why would you want that to happen John? That place is career suicide.
Reason #1615 why college sports are better than professional: no owners.
You can't fire an owner. If your team has a bad owner, you're doomed.
November 1st, 2015 at 6:43 PM ^
Career suicide? Come on WD. Stop hating on the LIONS. Lions would do very well with a proven coach. Just look at the past 4 or 5 hires. Disasters. John would do very well in Detroit. In fact, he is more likely to get a better control of the front office, than what he gets in Baltimore.
November 1st, 2015 at 6:46 PM ^
Okay, the last 4 or 5 hires.
The last 4 or 5 hires don't date back 50 years.
November 2nd, 2015 at 9:06 AM ^
In fact, if you went back 50 years, you'd go through 16 coaches. Going back 51 years would get you a 17th.

I say this as a lifelong Lions fan: It's the very definition of career suicide.

Doesn't surprise me when I think about it, given their record in the modern era.
November 1st, 2015 at 8:55 PM ^
I was stupid enough to believe that Mariucci would be the answer. He also never coached again, but might still be collecting a pay check from the Lions lol

Well, Russ Thomas had an interesting qualification that gave him the job for a looooong time: he saved William Clay Ford from throwing his life away. Basically picked him up out of the gutter.

Don't feel sorry for me. I am fine. Michigan is back and that makes a whole lot of difference. I don't let Lions ruin my life. Those days are over. But, it is pretty fun to think about a good coach turning around Lions. Hope it happens soon, including cleaning up the front office completely.

But I thought about this yesterday...is there any real chance this could happen or that the Lions could just offer him so much and with it being a rocky time in B'more right now that he decides to leave?

What if the Lions offered him full control? Bill Parcells left the Patriots after the Jets gave him complete control over football operations.
The problem with the Lions....no one knows who's in charge. If Martha Ford is running things, I don't see anything changing. Bill Ford needs to take over the team and finally fix this miss.
November 1st, 2015 at 7:17 PM ^
Bill Ford ran far away from Lions. He doesn't want to deal with them. That tells me right there that he is a capable executive. Wish he would take over and do something that his father could not do.

swallows up careers. . .I would be very afraid if for his career if he were to do that.

John Harbaugh Coaching The Lions in 2016 Confirmed!
November 1st, 2015 at 6:24 PM ^
I acually want the Ravens to lose a bunch more games, fire John, have the Lions hire John, and have BOTH Harbaughs in Michigan! I can dream, right?

I'll need to check in on them and see how they're doing ...
Well, ok then. I check again next year. On my calendar.

If John is let go after this season, I think there is a very real chance he comes to Michigan. Grew up in Ann Arbor, coached at Western Michigan, has already won a Super Bowl, and hasn't had much success in college. He has strong ties to the midwest with other gigs at Indiana, Pitt, and Cinci. And if Hoke gets a job (more and more likely) Michigan will have some money to spare.

Why would any qualified coach come to Detroit. Both Bobby Ross and Jim Caldwell have Super Bowl experience before coming to Detroit and have failed. Until the Fords sell the franchise why would any good coach come to Detroit.
November 1st, 2015 at 6:59 PM ^
This is just an observation, but it is getting to a point now where it is pretty clear that continual on-field changes really aren't attacking the core problem - there needs to be some changes above the field, if you will, up to and including new ownership. With that I would agree. Even if the Fords didn't sell, faces other than Mayhew and Lewand might be a small step in the right direction.

Sadly, there is no evidence that they would do that, even if the fan in me is forever hopeful that Bill Jr. might have some sort of revelation somewhere down the road, but it hasn't happened and current trend would point to this being ulikely. If I really could get everything that I wanted, the Fords would not own the Lions, to be quite honest, but I was trying to hedge my bets on that particular wish there.
November 1st, 2015 at 7:02 PM ^
I am still not sure if Caldwell didn't win because he had Manning. He was left with a good team. It feels like Hoke effect. How do you turn the best WR in the whole country into an average player? I can't blame the front office for that.
November 1st, 2015 at 7:21 PM ^
Just look at his coaching record in college. Brady Hoke has a better resume. Good coaches don't go 26-63 no matter what. He was lucky that Tony Dungy left him a stacked Colts team with Peyton Manning in his prime.
