Submitted by M Gulo Gulo on

As the annual battle for the Little Brown Jug renews this Saturday I thought it would be interesting to see what everyones favorite game and or memory is from the rivarly with the Finest Piece of Football Crockery in America!

My personal fav in my lifetime is the 2003 game what a come back!

I look forward to the jugs return to its home in Schembechler Hall

I was with a group of Boy Scouts camping out at Greenfield Village that evening.  I left after a late dinner to go to a Dearborn bar to watch the game.  The place was pretty depressed most of the game, and to make matters worse I was in uniform and couldn't drink.  There wasn't a sound in the place other than groans until we launched that fantastic comeback.  After the victory I drove back to Greenfield Village (I believe it was well after midnight) to find the gates locked.  I had to scale the fence to get back to my tent.

however the game being played on a Friday night was a total buzzkill.  After my high school game, I got home in time to see Rivas kick the game winner right as I turned on the TV.  I had no idea what had happened until the commentators verbally recapped the events.

2003 is my favorite as well. Wasn't that game played on a Friday night for some reason? I remember having to miss watching it live because of my high school football game. Maybe I'm thinking if a different year though.

Think it had something to do with a possible Twins playoff game being schedule on that Saturday .

I feel like almost everyone's has got to be the 2003 game which turned around that season.

In recent memory I really enjoyed the 2012 away win where Gardner played awesome at QB in one of his early games at the position.

It was his first start, right after the Nebraska game.

He had that great spin/scramble where he found Dileo with about 20 yards of space on all sides in the endzone for a TD, right below where I was sitting with my daughter. Gallon started to emerge as a jump ball threat, too.

The previous week we were up a shit creek when Denard went down with his arm injury and we had to put Bellomy in against Nebraska. Then lo and behold, just one week later Gardner's ready to play QB and after a slow start in the first half against the Gophers, really excelled. That really was a great game.

Because Gardner was a little wobbly in the first half I suppose you could say that even if they would have put him in at QB against Nebraska he would not have saved the game for us (final score ended up being 23-9, not all that close). However it's still bewildering how he couldn't be the option in that game (why not put him in after Bellomy's first deer in headlights interception???) but he was pretty much game-ready the following week. Oh, that coaching staff.

I still contend, however, that 2012 was a very underrated season. We had a tough schedule, Denard got injured ... 8-5 isn't lighting the world on fire but we beat MSU, played well against OSU (another coaching debacle), blew out multiple other B1G opponents, and really outplayed South Carolina for most of the Outback Bowl. That roster with a better coaching staff, even with Denard's injury and the brutal schedule, gets to another BCS game.

I've never understood why so many fans, armed with three years of watching Al Borges produce absolutely execrable offensive performances on the road, think that the insertion of Devin Gardner as a backup at night in Nebraska would somehow transform that game into an offensively competent win.

It's not like Denard got injured on the first drive. The offense was awful for the entire time he was in the game; Bellomy was worse, but "backup Devin Gardner on the road" is not somehow going to win a game that was a coaching disaster to begin with.

All I was saying was that Garnder started off a little rusty against Minnesota the next week, so it stands to reason that we might have started off just as rusty or rustier after getting put in at Nebraska, without the week of reps, etc. He certainly would have played better than Bellomy, I am just not certain he would have played better than a healthy Denard ... and like you said, the offense wasn't moving the ball well with him in there.

My point wasn't that Gardner could have miraculously won the game for us, just that it's odd that he didn't get the chance to try, given how well he played against Minny the next week.

Not my favorite, but certainly memorable . . . 1986 against Minnesota.  We were undefeated and ranked #2.  It was freezing cold and nobody could hold on to the ball.  It looked like a volleyball game.

Foggie ran wild on us right at the end of the game - the first of our many disasters against running QBs - and got them into field goal range.  Lohmiller made it and won the game with no time left.  They came storming over to Michigan's bench to claim the LBJ which they had not had for years.  it was a scene.

Everyone was shocked.  That Minnesota game was the reason that Harbaugh made his famous guarantee against Ohio State the following week . . . to make it clear that Minnesota was just a slip-up and that nobody should just write Michigan off.  And we did indeed beat Ohio State the next week (thanks more to the heroics of Jamie Morris than Jim Harbaugh) to still win the Big Ten and make it to the Rose Bowl.

I was at that game.  I recall we were ranked #2 and Penn State was ranked #1.  I think PSU lost about 30-60 minutes before we lost.  There was that window where it seemed like we were about to move up to #1.

And the MMB did a Hanna Barbera halftime show that might still be the best one I've ever seen.  The Elvis one in 1993 was a damn fine show as well.

Penn State went undefeated that year (1986) and beat undefeated Miami for the National Championship.

Truth be told, even if we would have gone undefeated that year, we would not have been voted the National Champions.  We were locked into the Rose Bowl, while PSU and Miami were indpendents and were free to arrange a matchup.  The winner of that game was always going to be voted #1 by the media / AP.

My favorite Brown Jug moment was when one of my idiot friends took me up on my 1:00 a.m. offer (after barhopping) for four free chili dogs at the Brown Jug.  The only condition was that he had to eat them all at one sitting.

Takeru Kobayashi this guy wasn't.  Closer to Mr. Creosote.

What?  Oh, that Brown Jug.

I can't speak for everyone, but I knew my buddy did not have this capacity.  Also, the Brown Jug's food quality may have improved over the years.  Back in the day, eating four of their chili dogs would have been roughly the same as drinking a quart of Olestra, with a splash of ipecac.

Bonus - not only did my idiot friend get temporarily and hilariously ill, but he did not finish the fourth dog.

My favorite is when they used to have "50 cent Olde Style" nights.  And we took one of the Japanese visiting post-docs from work, and the next morning, he said, Ohhh... I'm hanging over."

Oh, you said LITTLE Brown Jug.  Nevermind.

Night game at minny where we were down 21-0 or whatever, or the one where Nabarre scrambled for like 40 yards

Agree with you 100%. Was at that game - my first and only trip to the Metrodome. Terrible place to watch a college game, but it actullay felt like a huge win for Michigan. Thankfully we can hopefully now get back to predictably beating teams like Minnesota. Thank you Harbaugh!

Not too many (good) memorable games since I've been a fan, but I enjoy watching highlights from the 2004 matchup of Top 15 teams. Also a fourth quarter comeback.

Mine is 2003 as well. Biggest Michigan comback ever, I believe, which is even more amazing because the 21 point comeback was in the fourth quarter, and it was won in regulation.

Weird Friday night game because of a conflict with Twins playoff game.

Also, Michigan gave up over 400 yards rushing.

2004 - great game-winning drive, Tyler Ecker rumbling into the end zone. Henne had a ridiculous game. Plus, Glen Mason talked about how much he hurt losing that one.

2003 was the most epic game certainly, but my favorite moment was Brady Hoke breaking out the Fritz formation to eviscerate them in 2011. That was the point when I started to think this Hoke regime might work out. Silly me.

We played like poo for most of the game and almost lost to Minnesota back when Michigan Arrogance was at a peak and you just did not lose to Minnesota.

The defense was terrible and we had to come back and use a trick play to win...exciting for non-Michigan fans, but I remember being disappointed in how we played in that game.

We did beat OSU that year though, beat the breaks off them bitches.

Well, "played like poo for most of the game" is true for a lot of games involving huge fourth-quarter comebacks.  You have to play badly in order to fall behind that much in the first place.

Also, that wasn't a typical Minnesota team - it was 6-0 and ranked ahead of us.  We, meanwhile, were 4-2 and coming off a loss to Iowa.  Our season was hanging in the balance.  That comeback not only turned that game around but the entire year.  We ran the table the rest of the regular season.
