OT: Star Wars - The Force Awakens MNF trailer

https://youtu.be/sGbxmsDFVnE Choo Choo, all aboard the hype train. I'm so wary after the prequels, but this looks legit, cautious optimism is rapidly giving way to unbridled anticipation. (yes, I know this technically violates the in-season OT rule, but it's the bye week and we all need a little diversion right now) Edit: Can someone please assist with the embed? Can't figure it out on mobile.

logical your conclusion is....but defies logic life can........

Anakin lost the same hand didn't he. Perhaps its a flashback. The logic is that its Luke but they don't show, nor have any of the previews shown Luke's face and he doesn't appear on the official poster. Han Solo is clearly going to be the primary link to the original trilogy for this movie. Maybe we don't see Luke until the next movie.

I don't know why but I have this gut feeling that Han Solo might get killed in this movie.

I love everything about this. The visuals, the characters, the effects, the dogfights, etc etc. Perfect trailer (though I must say, making a trailer for Star Wars XII is definitely easy mode). JJ Abrams is the fucking man and I have no doubt that this will be an unreal movie start to finish. Midnight premier get hype!

I'm taking the day off work, gotta see that at least twice. That trailer looks incredible. Can't wait for the film!!!

Where's Luke Skywalker though? Not on the poster, not in the trailer? What gives?

kylo ren looks badass. commander phasma also looks cool.

there are all kinds of rumors swirling around Luke. will he die early like Qui Gon Jin and Obi-Wan?

I can't wait. the new movie poster is my desktop on my PC.

Check out the comic con video, it's what sold me. They are making a huge effort to use practical effects, physical sets and costumes, etc and not overly relying on CGI so they create a world that has weight and feels tangible. So much of the last 3 movies felt so obviously like disjointed actors acting (poorly) in front of green screens that were cobbled together later. This movie doesn't have that at all. All the clips one seen feel gritty and real.

Most of thecharacters in the prequel trilogy weren't people in suits or puppets either.  What really hurt those movies is that the action scenes were boring CGI light shows that had more in common with an anime cartoon than the original trilogy, dragged on endlessly, and didn't advance the plot.

Basically what it sounds like is that they are just using humans and shooting scenes on locaction and with real sets.  So no more volcanic planets or Jar Jar.  Nice change, I guess, but not very significant.  The action scenes are where the difference between CGI and practical effects stands out the most.  If the action scenes are all a bunch of incomprehensible, computerized, hyperedited crap blowing up loudly in your face then they won't be an improvement over the prequels.

They didn't use CGI in the original movies.  They built models to scale and then used some excellent camera work and pyrotechnics to make it look awesome.  That's why the Death Sar battle scene in the original movie still holds up as one of the greatest action scenes ever filmed while the CGI light shows of the prequels were completely forgettable.  Using practical effects takes a lot of hard work and the action scenes are where it is most important. It also requires a ton of competence on the part of the crew understanding stuff like lighting to make it look realistic.  CGI is, more than anything, a lazy way out.  It doesn't even save money, as evidenced by the bloated budgets of today's movies (which dwarf sci-fi films of yesteryear even when adjusted for inflation).

Yeah - and look how bad the space battle fights look compared to today. It's blatantly obvious that those are models in episode four and they look terribly fake. I agree that using practical effects is great (most of the time and when done well, like JJ did in this movie), but they have to use CGI to make these giant battles, especially when there are aircrafts (ones that don't exist in real life) involved.

The prequel action sequences weren't bad because of CGI, they were bad because of *bad* CGI, and more importantly, bad directing. When Lucas has cutting edge CGI like he did, he gets distracted from the filmmaking aspects and focuses on the "look at what I can do" part.

I think film makers have finally caught up to the technology and learned how to do CGI transparently and most importantly realize less is more.
