Sparty Hate Thread Day One

Submitted by jsquigg on

So, MSU used to be #3 in the holy trinity of rivals.  Given recent events and the behavior of many friends and family who are Sparty fans, and MSU is very close to Ohio State in how much I hate their program.  The week has barely begun and too many Spartan friends are flooding social media, mocking Harbaugh and Michigan fans thinking they're "back."  I mostly keep to myself and always try to stay classy and respectful, but here's hoping Saturday is the beginning of the end for that program and their whining coach.  It was way more fun when they had legitimate reasons to feel inferior, but it is so predictable that the fans who were classless in losing are also sore winners who have to measure everything through the Michigan lens.

Sparty has played the "no respect" angle forever.  "All they ever wanted" is for Michigan to take them seriously.  Mission accomplished.  Michigan's coach is an ex-QB whom they injured with a dirty hit in 1984, leading to the worst season Bo ever had at Michigan.

Be careful what you ask for, Sparty.

Enough about them to hate them. Just another bunch of classless jackasses that happen to live nearby. Now that ND is off the schedule, we only have one real rival left. Sparty would like nothing more than to fill that void and I for one do not wish to give them the satisfaction. Now that we have the best coaching staff in all of cfb, we can go back to beating their asses and ignoring them.

"We only have one real rival left."
Really?

I don't get why it's always such a tough thing to acknowledge here that we have two big rivals (three if counting when we play ND). Are there not other schools that have more than one rival? Does Alabama not consider LSU a rival ?

Sparty has been, at best, a fly in our ointment. A mediocre program that occasionally fields a good team and beats us with it. The last 7 years does not a rivalry make. We'll be back to beating them 3/4 of the time very soon. ND is a rival as I consider them a peer school academically and OSU always brings it on the gridiron. Wtf does state have other than proximity?

to be our rivals, a team has to be an equal on some plane. Taking advantage of us when we are at our program's historical low isn't good enough. Also, we are their standard, which is another reason they can't be a rival. ND and OSU hate us and respect us as equals. Neither strives like Sparty does to BE us and to be acknowledged by us. Trouble is, the past 7 years would be like Lincoln celebrating that they have finally bested Cadillac, while refusing to realize comparing themselves to the Cimarron isn't really much of an accomplishment. Saturday is critical to their psyche. Win, and it gives them another year of hope that they can hold off the Harbaugh onslaught that is surely coming. Lose, and it smashes their self-perception that they have finally assumed a place on the mantle. "Geez, this guy's at Michigan just 9 months and we're already right back where we started."

That would make sense if MSU was only beating us and still finishing .500 every season. But they have won 11 in 4 of the past 5 years? And are now a top 5 team for a 3rd year in a row? So that isn't taking advantage of a weak UM team. That is just a great team.

Yes it's normal to have more than one rival.  Florida has FSU, Tennesee.  Notre Dame has USC, Navy and Michigan. Virginia has VT, Maryland and UNC.  You may have conference based and geographic rivals and teams that are both.   MSU is absolutely a rival, but that game just doesn't get the spotlight of The Game which has national attention. It's interest is state and conference footprint based. But it certainly has implications for local recruiting and conference standings moreso now that MSU has had an unpredented run of success (coinciding with a severe downturn by UM). I didn't grow up in the state of Michigan, but I feel that UM people dimishing the stature/importance/existence of the MSU rivalry is just another way of being snobby and trolling.  Objecticely there's no quesion that it's a rivalry and an important one.

Yeah, no, not at all unprecedented.  There was a two decade time period, ancient history I know, that Michigan went 4-14-2 against Sparty.

Everyone talks about the 10 year war with OSU but often over looked...nay, ignored, is that Bo Schembechler returned college football in the state of Michigan back to a normal condition, Michigan as the state's Alpha football program.

I want to win this game so bad...I just hope we do, I'm sick of those assholes, just figure out a way to win. It's time...Let's Go Blue! They better be playing with a huge chip on their shoulders Saturday!

Come on. Whether you like it or not, MSU has a good program now. You know why OSU and MSU have had success against us so much recently? Partly because they obsess about beating us. OSU had Tressel, who made it clear from day one that UM is the game to win amd it worked. MSU then gets Dantonio who came from Tressel's tree. Where did he get the "obsessed with beating Michigan" from? Tressel...and it worked for MSU, too. As for Meyer, he was just the benefactor of Tressel's work. Granted, he is in year four now, so now it's all him, but he completely lucked into his situation. Now before you say something like, "MSU benefited because Michigan sucked since 2008," I did say "partly." Perhaps we should care more about beating MSU.

People were saying Michigan would get a challenge when they played BYU. UM dominated them so now BYU must not be a good team.

People were saying Michigan would finally get a challenge when they played NW. UM dominated them so now NW must not be a good team.

Now people are saying Michigan will finally get a challenge when they play Sparty. I can't wait until Saturday night when people say State isn't very good either.

We dominate them and there will be 2 narratives used by those trying to pump the breaks on Michigan officially being "back." First will be from sparties claiming all manor of injuries are the reason. These people are to be ignored by everyone. The second will be from national level people, correctly, pointing out that MSU was not nearly as good as their record indicated, backed up by all their close scrapes against mediocre at best teams. We dominate them and I truly believe their descent back to regional only relevance will have already started.

we'll get kudos for beating them. We'll be top 10. Somewhat to your point, though, I live out of state and mostly what I get is "I'm a Michigan fan one day each year - when you play the Buckeyes." Really, that should be our standard. Sparty has been a good football team. They are not the 4th best in the country; they were better last year. But they are still a very good test, and most reasonable people know this.

OSU get's under my skin like no other. But at least when they talk smack they have a trophy to back it up. MSU is by far the most annoying fans of recent memory. They literally think they have a heritage of winning over there that dates back to the dawn of the game....

Can we not do this?  Like, can we not have a Sparty hate thread at all?  We have an awesome, dominating team, an awesome coach, and a great outlook - how about we talk about that, not another team.  We (justifiably) taunt Sparty and OSU fans for talking about us constantly, more than they talk about their own team, let's not start doing the same thing.  Go Blue!

living here in Lansing is a lot of "What an ass, leaving all of his starters in against Northwestern up 38-0 in the final minute... going for it on 4th and 1... rubbing it in... if we lose its only because we've got so many injured players..."

GAWD.
