All I can tell you is he will have a ton of competition for him, he will be a national recruit
January 8th, 2010 at 10:40 PM ^
His High School colors!
January 8th, 2010 at 10:43 PM ^
Improvement in the team will help us out a lot, I mean he grew up a Michigan fan and he will get a chance to play early. What else would he want?
January 8th, 2010 at 10:48 PM ^
He doesn't want to redshirt and definitely wants to get on the field asap, but then again who doesn't.
"I am looking for good academics," he said. "I also don't want to redshirt. I want to go somewhere I can play right away."
We'll have the PT working in our favor.

The 6-1, 218-pound DePriest was in Ann Arbor on Nov. 21 as Ohio State wrapped up the regular season with a win over host Michigan.
“It was a good game,” DePriest said. “There were a lot of mistakes, but it was real live up there. Michigan is a good school. They need to get out of the hole they are in. They want me to come up and play early.”
January 8th, 2010 at 10:54 PM ^
another Josh Furman... maybe we don't need depth... maybe we need to keep recruiting these kind of guys and go back to our best 11 athletes playing BOTH WAYS!! Damn, is RR an innovator or what?
(sarcasm)
Sounds like a great get if it happens.
January 8th, 2010 at 11:26 PM ^
He's more of a true LB than Furman and maybe not quite the athlete. But he will be a great college LB. So excited for him.
January 8th, 2010 at 11:48 PM ^
DePriest and Furman are nothing alike, aside from the fact that they play the same general positions.
January 8th, 2010 at 11:07 PM ^
...will determine the recruiting class. Another crappy year will dampen top recruits from wanting to play for RichRod, imho. It's why U of M needs to win at least 8 games and go to a bowl.
January 8th, 2010 at 11:47 PM ^
DePriest has said that Michigan needs to do better on the field for him to come here. He's not going to go to Michigan if we go 5-7 again or 6-6.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:31 AM ^
If we go 5-7 again Rich Rod will be chased out of Ann Arbor. Hell if we go 6-6 he'll still be catching a shit load of flack. But here's to hoping we'll be bowl eligible on Oct. 9th 2010!
January 9th, 2010 at 12:14 AM ^
I'm a Michigan fan and I'd commit even if M went 3-9 twice.
January 9th, 2010 at 6:23 AM ^
Good for you
January 9th, 2010 at 8:49 AM ^
Same here but I think we are in a different boat than Trey Depriest. We are obsessed and fanatical, vis a vis fans. Trey has his future to think of but here's to hopping that his future has Michigan in it!
January 9th, 2010 at 9:10 AM ^
Too bad your name's not Trey Depriest.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:52 AM ^
is even halfway decent we should be able to win 8 games with our returning guys on offense. I think our running backs are going to be much better than expected. Fitz, Shaw and Smith should be a formidable backfield with Hopkins contributing in the big back role.
January 9th, 2010 at 12:58 AM ^
All hail Mike Cox. Who is my sleeper, "holy shit where did this guy come from" pick for next year. I don't care that it fly's in the face of logic, he had one crazy good run and I love him. Plus...I need to see people wearing "I Hart Cox" shirts, I need it.
Football gods, if your there, you've screwed me over real bad the last few years, my Wolverines have struggled, my Bronco's have had late season collapses to keep them out of the playoffs, and I continue to be awful at it. If you grant me one with other than us winning a national title and all of those recruits I'm always badgering you about, let this happen, please.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:00 AM ^
THANK YOU.
(You posted while I was typing my post.)
January 9th, 2010 at 1:00 AM ^
Why does everyone forget about Michael Cox? That kid played like a beast in limited time last year, but Hopkins is getting mentioned ahead of him?
Y'all sleepin' on Cox.
Pun intended.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:06 AM ^
because hes not a good rb.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:10 AM ^
Statistically, he's the best running back we have.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:34 AM ^
If the only statistic you consider is ypc.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:41 AM ^
He had a higher YPC than anyone else, had the longest run of anyone, and tied for the lead in rushing TDs.
I'm not saying he's great, but throwing Hopkins ahead of him is a big leap.
January 9th, 2010 at 2:26 AM ^
Those stats are bullshit. If you take out Delaware State Cox gained 20 yards this season on 2 carries this season and zero touchdowns.
January 9th, 2010 at 2:40 AM ^
Okay, let's take out the DSU stats. Who generally seems to be this blog's favorite to be the starter for the next couple years? Vincent Smith.
Smith carried the ball 31 times for 110 yards, which is an average of 3.55 yards per carry. His longest carry would have been TEN yards. And he had ZERO touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Cox had 2 carries for 31 yards (not sure where you got your stats) and a long of 24. So Michael Cox STILL had a better yards per carry average and the longest run of the two.
January 9th, 2010 at 9:47 AM ^
It wouldn't matter if he had had 50 yards on those carries. You're glossing over the salient point, outside of DSU he had 2 (!) carries this year and those came at the end of the EMU blowout! Let me repeat, Cox's only carries came against real and glorified 1-AA opponents. They are no basis for saying he's statistically the best returning RB, especially not when Smith was grinding out 4 ypcarry and scoring a touchdown as a receiving threat against freakin OSU.
January 9th, 2010 at 10:10 AM ^
Did I say anything about context? Did I say that he's unequivocally the best running back we have returning?
No and no.
I said that he's statistically the best running back we have returning. Highest average yards per carry, longest runs vs. FBS *and* FCS opponents, and just as many rushing TDs as anyone else.
Sure, you can make an argument that Vincent Smith was statistically the best running back, since he had more overall yards...but 3.55 yards per carry against FBS opponents isn't impressive, no matter how you slice it.
January 9th, 2010 at 10:36 AM ^
You can't just openly ignore context and expect me or anyone else to put weight into your conclusions that follow.
Statistics are meaningless unless you adequately account for context.
Your rebuttal is lame.
January 9th, 2010 at 10:50 AM ^
You don't understand this, do you?
STATISTICS do not lie. They are facts. They cannot be argued. The STATISTICS in the record book at the University of Michigan show that Michael Cox was more successful as a running back in most STATISTICAL categories last season.
I am not saying he's the best. Obviously, the coaches don't think he's the best, or else Cox would have started the OSU game. I'm saying his numbers are better.
This is the last time I'll comment on this, because it's just stupid at this point.
January 9th, 2010 at 11:53 AM ^
The weight statistics carry is argued all the time. Boise State went undefeated in the regular season, they didn't get considered for the national champiionship game because although their record was the same, people didn't confuse that for their regular season being equally impressive. Boise's record wasn't as impressive cause they were beating up on WAC teams, Cox's stats aren't as impressive because he was beating up on a I-AA team and a team that should be in I-AA. Are some of Cox's numbers higher? Obviously, but to say he had the "best" numbers confers a value judgment that, given the context they were accumulated, is misplaced.
January 9th, 2010 at 4:33 PM ^
58.3% of all statistics are made up
January 9th, 2010 at 8:53 AM ^
I'm in the same camp as you are. Just wondering why Mike Cox isnt being mentioned more often. He's looked good in limited playing time and with Brandon Minor gone, he can definately fit into the big back role. If Hopkins is as good as advertised, I really do think we have enough playing time for two big backs though. It's not a given that Vincent Smith will recover in time for the 2010 season given that ACLs can take at least a year to feel "normal" again. Hopefully we are in a situation where we don't have to rush him back due to having numerous backs step up.
January 9th, 2010 at 9:05 AM ^
Point made by others, and better than me.
January 9th, 2010 at 1:49 AM ^
but I don't recall any RBs being back to full speed the first year after a torn ACL especially with the injury taking place the last game of the year. They're usually not back to full strength until year two.
January 9th, 2010 at 2:22 AM ^
im thinking Toussaint proves to be the best RB next year. reminds me of Armando Allen
January 9th, 2010 at 2:26 AM ^
Vincent Smith isn't the only guy we have back. I completely forgot about Cox. He didn't have any meaningful carries just garbage time, he still has much to prove. I agree putting Hopkins ahead of him is a bit of a stretch though. Im hoping Lewan has a great spring and can take over Ortmann's spot because I have never been to crazy about Dorrestein and putting and LT is a scary thought to me. Our O-Line should give any back that we hand the ball to the chance to be effective this season.
January 9th, 2010 at 2:38 AM ^
we'll get off to a good start on the field and land this kid. linebacker is most definitely going to be the #1 priority in this next recruiting class. we'll be after him hard.
...it really seems like rich rod and co. are getting their midwest roots DOWN, doesn't it!? excellent, excellent news.
January 9th, 2010 at 2:41 AM ^
Is this the new incarnation of k06em01?
January 9th, 2010 at 9:20 AM ^
It's definitely him.
January 9th, 2010 at 4:03 PM ^
Exactly what I was thinking. His Alias' have to be into the double-digits by now. Emo stop cursing us with all your predictions. According to you Murphy, Grimes and others have been silent commits for weeks. How'd that turn out for us? Now your calling for Depriest if we start off strong next year. Please. Make. It. Stop.

Here is my favorite line in the JJ Huddle article:
"(OSU assistant Luke) Fickell has been to my school. I bumped into him."
TRANSLATION: "I bumped into him" = The school called me down to the office and 'I bumped into him' for 45 minutes in the Conference Room with my Head Coach.
January 9th, 2010 at 9:52 AM ^
is from my hometown of Springfield, Ohio so I'm doubly interested in him going to Michigan!

I like to to close my eyes and think of a starting linebacking trio of Trey Depriest, Lawrence Thomas and Josh Furman.Hey I can dream can't I.
