Mike Riley to replace Carroll?
This is unconfirmed. I was cruising the USC message boards and this is the primary name being thrown around.
Your coach bolting is bad enough, but having him bolt to a conference foe would be difficult to swallow.
I was thinking Chris Peterson would be a candidate and maybe he is. A lot of Boise's players hail from Cali.
Edit: If you didn't know, Riley is the head coach at Oregon State.

Riley was the guy SC originally wanted before they hired Carroll but SD wouldn't let him interview. Riley has proven he's a competent college HC, so that would be good for SC, but if I was a hot shot coaching candidate, I'm not touching SC with a 10-ft cattleprod until I find out the results of the investigation or I'm given Amaker-like job security in an initial contract so I can ride out the sanctions.

What about Jim Harbaugh? Now THAT would be a twist of fate.
As much as I have my reservations about Harbaugh, I have to think that he would pass on this job if he had the chance. But maybe not.

I am not sure about the guy, as a coach.
1. Drunk driving arrest
2. Going for two to hit 50 against USC
3. Badmouthing his alma mater, repeatedly
I think all of this shows a tendency to make impulsive, irrational decisions.

Sure I have reservations about Harbaugh but based on my unabashed hatred of USC if he takes their coaching job I'm going to be forced to drink until I pass out, wake up and repeat until I completely forget/ come to terms with this. Anyone but JH for this job.

and the story he's been telling for the last few years is that he wants to stay where he is, has his dream job at Oregon State, etc.
The backstory is that he was coach at OSU in the late 90's, left just as they were getting good to be head coach for the Chargers, and failed in the NFL. When he got a second chance at OSU (after Erickson left) he committed not to make the same mistake again and leave his hometown program for a bigger, more pressure-filled situation.

Being out here, this guy brings in a bunch of 2 and 3 stars, then churns out 7-8 NFL prospects every year. He gets 8-9 wins every year despite playing a reasonably tough schedule, and some fairly decent teams (Oregon, USC, Cal) every year.
Good summary vandal. I agree with every bit of it.

if carrol leaving has anything to do with the possibility of the NCAA hammer coming down and rumor leaks why would any coach want to go to a program that is facing multiple ncaa sanctions?

I would not want to be the next coach of USC, because the bar has been put very high by Carroll and any coach after him is just set up to be a disappointment to fans.

Forrest Gregg would be a good fit. He has certain experience that will fit in well at USC over the next several years.

Riley is a hell of a coach. Fit him into the "turning 2/3 stars into NFL caliber players" category. Would be a great coach with all that talent.. but I hope he stays at Oregon State.

If any coach doesn't really want to "reach" for the job then I think Ed Orgeron has got to get a look. He was the D-Line coach before taking the head coaching job at Ole Miss. Now he is an assistant for the devil over there at UT.

its strange that they're not going after someone bigger. after hearing all the big names involved with the nd and florida (for a day) jobs...i mean...usc is still right on top of the college football universe. possible ncaa sanctions could really hurt their potential to land a big shot coach.
i would have also thought that harbaugh would've been ahead or riley on the totem poll...or chip kelly!?

There's never been an open coaching job he hasn't liked. It would be a twist for him, probation preceding him at the school he moves to, not coming after he leaves.
Speaking of Erickson, didn't Seattle already do the former college coach thing? Don't think it worked out so well the first time either.
