Dillon Baxter Update

Submitted by TomVH on

Just talked to Dillon Baxter, USC RB commit, and he said he's, "Really mad," about the Pete Carroll news.

Michigan was high on his list, and they almost got him to change his commitment at one point. If Pete Carroll does leave, there could be movement.

Just thought I would keep you updated.

Ever since the whole MSU skimask event, news has generally been good for Michigan. I look forward to getting a few unexpected players before signing day, and having a hell of a spring game!

Although we already have 2 RBs in the class already, neither of them are game changers. Baxter is, and after losing Drake, Witty, Murphy, and maybe Grimes, his commitment would be a breathe of fresh air (if it happens).

I see a lot of concern and discomfort about the Grimes situation; it is unfortunate. We'll be okay; Cullen Christian will be great. A Baxter signing would be a great addition to the class.

I am already looking forward to the spring game

He sure looks good in a winged helmet...... let's hope he keeps it that way.

Edit: he plays qb in high school? The thought of tate in the gun, baxter on one side, and DROB on the other, Just think of what RR could do with 3 ample passers on the field at once...ok im gonna go sit down for a while im getting way to ampd up....

Wow, looks really good. He can throw better then "shoelace" so thats good, and he has amazing moves/agility. The only thing that worries me is when he get hit he tends to dive forward just waiting for someone to smuck him right in the kisser. Otherwise, could be a great pick up for the Big Blue

Hey Dillion, you look good in a winged helment!

And not just because you bring good news... but that doesn't hurt.

Also, fun fact about Baxter: he appears to own some kind of horse, and is able to get on said horse very quickly...

dont they usually hang around to find out who the new coach is going to be? kindof get 're-recruited' etc. if usc makes a power replacement hire, do we expect a change here? how close was he to seriously not picking usc to begin with?

the early enrollee thing certainly adds a neat twist.

The problem with this for USC is that this is all very bad timing. If this would have happened a year ago (Carroll leaving) they would have had a built in successor in Sarkisian already there. Hire him and dont miss a beat... Howeva Sarkisian is off to Washington, USC doesnt have a known successor on staff, so more than likely they venture outside of the program. With that said, remember how long our coaching search went for? Sure USC is definately a huge job, but still at minimum you might be looking at a 2 week turn around on a hire. Couple that with who the new coach brings in in regards to assistants and you start to push up next to the national signing day. Not a good scenario for a team still in it with a number of high-profile recruits in that a lot of uncertainty cannot be good this late in the recruiting process and likewise who's around to recruit them? They stand to lose some recruits if Carroll leaves, and might lose some depending on how long this Carroll to Seattle thing drags out. Will Baxter shake lose and become available? Who knows but he does become available, that might fill our need for a top RB.

USC doesn't have a successor primed because of the likelihood of institutional issues. It's hard to believe that Sarkisian wouldn't have read the writing on the wall and moved quickly when the Washington situation arose.

Given your take on the hiring turn around the timing couldn't be more surprising, really. If Carroll wasn't running out on the school (and chasing the NFL lucre) then why not just announce before the bowl (and keep your recruiting situations/coaching recruitment open).

Anyway, Mike Garrett certainly has a lot of explaining to do.

Add in the very real perception that bad things are about to happen to the USC football team just like the basketball team and it has to make a kid think twice.

Signing day is close, so they're really gonna be on the spot with these decisions. Wrong one could cost them 2 years if they want to transfer.

"conordog;" I agree he could take a wait and see approach, but as others have eluded to NSD is right around the corner, so I don't think he'll sit back and wait on USC. IMO a power hire is unlikely at least in comparison to a RR caliber coach. Can’t you just imagine the negative recruiting tactics of those not named Michigan in regards to stating the cause of PC's departure being the sanctions coming down the pipe from the NCAA? All in all the negative tactics of others are just going to push him more and more in our direction I feel.
